View Full Version : I Got It Running
guc32 05-07-2005, 12:58 AM So I put the car together with the -4 feed line with a restrictor at the turbo. Im draining into a sump and then pumping it back to the pan.
So it starts smoking bad again. So i was so frustrated. So I just went and drove the car anyway. I thought the seals are gone on the turbo.
After about 10 mins of driving, the smoke went away. And have not come back since. I hope. I let the car idle for about 10 mins and no smoke.
So is it possible it takes time for the seals to seat? Is that why i was smoking and then it seated itself after some driving?
Well there is more lag with this turbo and less torque in the low end. Up top is amazing. Will let you guys know more when i get a chance to tune and dyno it.
Geno325is 05-07-2005, 02:10 AM yihwoei, Same thing happened to me with a new Turbonetics T3/T4... only smoked during the first run.
NickG 05-07-2005, 07:42 AM These hybrid t3/t4 turbos really don't 'blow out' the seals. When you have drain issues, the oil builds up and seeps past the seals, which are like piston rings (they have an end gap). Once the drainage issue is corrected, it takes a bit for the oil that seeped past the seals to burn off. Once its gone, the smoking goes away.
The only time these seals go bad is when the bearings get wiped out, and excessive shaft play occurs.
fritzintn 05-07-2005, 08:31 AM What did you change from your previous 60-1 setup?

Well its a new T3/T67 Garrett courtsey of Matt Duncan. Thanks again Matt.
4in to 3in reducer on the intake side.
-4 oil feed line.
2in outlet now on the turbo.
Exhaust bolts right up because its the same as the 60-1 HiFi i had. And that turbo is for sale right now.

No problem
I think you will like it.

Sounds like a nice little upgrade.
Any chance you can get some dyno overlays of your old vs new setup? That will make for some interesting data (and bench racing) if you can score that.

Good to hear the car is running again.
Are you still running the tec3 program from your 60-1 set up? If you are, I'm guessing that you might be running lean under boost. Did you upgrade your injectors?
I thought the compressor outlet on the t67 are 2.5. :confused
What RPM does the boost kick in?
Happy for you man. Congrats. :buttrock
badmonkey 05-07-2005, 06:14 PM Guc32, Streetwerke.com in Palo Alto has a brand new Mustang Dyno, much better for
tuning on. Vic has a hook up there, try it out. Recently they've had everything from a
custom turbo R32 (built by Streetwerke) to an F50 on the dyno.
John
guc32 05-07-2005, 10:38 PM Oh, i ment a 2.5 in outlet.
Yeah im on the Tec 3 with the 60-1 programe. Im not leaning out. I still have the 56lb injectors on there.
Im going to have Vic road tune it soon. Till then, Im just going to do it myself.

cool....let us know know the dyno results once you have it all tuned in.
Dinan330ic 05-08-2005, 01:24 AM Damn Yih-Woei, your car is (or is going to be) insane!!! You better give me a ride when I get back.
I'm glad everything's working out.
guc32 05-08-2005, 01:34 AM Full boost is 4000 rpm.
Mikea 05-08-2005, 01:57 AM Full boost is 4000 rpm.
Nice...do you have the stg5 turbine wheel?
jonsibal 05-08-2005, 04:11 AM I think he has the stage 3 but you guys have the same size housing (.82). Mike.. what rpm does your stage 5 wheel boost kick in?
guc32 05-08-2005, 12:07 PM Yes its a stage 3.
Mikea 05-09-2005, 08:30 AM I think he has the stage 3 but you guys have the same size housing (.82). Mike.. what rpm does your stage 5 wheel boost kick in?
The turbo starts to spool at 2000rpms and get full boost around 4000rpms. Even though I do not get full boost till 4000rpms Im seeing ~ 8-10psi at 3000rpms, so power down low it great.
kalib0y 05-09-2005, 02:28 PM wow this sounds exciting. I would like to hear how much better it feels after Vic retunes the car.
hukalaki 05-09-2005, 04:52 PM Yih-Woei, would you anticipate the top end torque curve to be the similar on MikeA's turbo?
Are you considering a set of turbo cams?

I think he is, cause he has a local buyer and good friend that would take his old ones...i think, what would the condition be of these badboys after being in a turbocharged monster like Yih-Woei's?...his s52 cams i mean?
guc32 05-09-2005, 07:20 PM I think it would be the same at the top end like Mikes, but i dont know how the turbine comes into play. His is a Stage 5 and mine is a Stage 3.
No i dont consider getting turbo cams. Need to stop modding. I dont know if turbo cams will hurt me when it comes to smog.
