Are springs/struts/shocks sprung or unsprung weight?

:confused

I believe they would be unsprung because their weight is not resting on the spings where as a cf hood would be sprung weight because it is weight that is indirectly applied to the springs.

The definition that I've always heard is that unsprung weight is that not supported by the springs. This would include wheels, tires, hubs/spindles, brakes (in most cases), and and a percentage of parts of the suspension to include control arms, sway bars, shocks and springs. Looks like Wikipeda agrees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsprung_weight).

So yes, part of the mass of the springs/shocks is considered unsprung weight.

the mass which the spring is supporting (sprung mass) includes some of the mass of the spring. it is both sprung and unsprung weight. the equivalent mass of the sprung mass is M + m/3 where M is the mass of the car the spring holds up and m is the mass of the spring.
