View Full Version : Headlight wiper question
jeff323 05-05-2005, 11:59 PM Hey guys, I have recently found the last of the parts that I needed for the headlight wash/wipe system for the E21's. I have been wanting to have this on my car for years, just because it is so rare here in the U.S. Even though I am not ready to install it yet, I'm unsure how it all goes together. I've figured out some of it, but it is a little confusing to me since I have really nothing to go by.
Does anyone know how these things are supposed to go together? :help
jeff323 05-06-2005, 11:41 AM I guess not! :(
Cerpin TaxT 05-06-2005, 01:40 PM try some of the 6er guys. i believe there are a few on here with euro 6's and some of the euro cars have thoes set ups and might know more.
jjgbmw323 05-06-2005, 01:41 PM I once was driving my 323i in Upper Vermont and I encountered a black 323i.
I pulled over and the driver and I talked.
He had the headlight windsheild wipers installed. The arms attach to the body and the rotating area moves out over the headlights.
I thought it was different. He also had broken his BBS spolier on a speedbump, and had a set of ALPINA rims.
I have the true euro headlights and do not want to put the windsheild wipers on my 323i. I want a clean look.

J

What are "true euro headlights" exactly? From what I understand, the wipers for the headlights won't work on american sealed beams. Too much of a contour.
jjgbmw323 05-06-2005, 06:38 PM Here is what Duckryder said:
Hi Joe.
The true Euro lights do not use H4 bulbs. (True Euro lights are what I sold you, along with the correct harness.) They are all H1's.
IIRC, and it was a long time ago, they have genuine BMW (Osram) bulbs, and the high beams have 100w, while the low have 55w. (I could be wrong, they may all have 55).
They are such a huge step up from sealed beams, the higher wattage bulbs are not really needed IMHO.
GOOD LUCK with the car, it is looking good
TheNeek 05-06-2005, 06:47 PM I'm just asking because when I bought my 7 inch buckets with lenses and everything, from BMW, it came with H4 bulbs.
Yonkers320is 05-06-2005, 07:27 PM maybe he has the flat lenses, I have the European code lights and they have a small roundness to the lens (not in a circumferencial way). I seen some german headlights that are completely flat so water doesn't sheath away as easily....
jeff323 05-06-2005, 11:53 PM I got a set of original Euro spec lights too; I purchased them from a guy in Germany a year or so ago. I have yet to install them though as the car is in pieces, they're really cool though! They were the last item I needed to get the car back to its OEM German specs. I can't wait to see it all together now!....someday :(
I'm sure everyone has seen this website and page, but it has a great write-up on the differences between the U.S. and Euro spec lights:

(notice the headlight wipers in one of the photos.. :D )
Since nobody seems to know exactly how the headlight wipers go together, do you think I could get a diagram of it or something through BMW? I have the BMW Mobile Tradition parts CD and there is an exploded diagram of the motor assemblies, and how wiper arms and hardware mount to them, but nothing on how they attach to the headlight buckets or how the washer nozzles attach. I can kind of figure some of it out through old press photos and stuff, but I want it to all be factory correct, since that is the type of restoration I am after.

I forget how to link car domain pictures on this site??
those are the euros, I looked at the sealed beams that were on my car before, the outer sealed lights have more rounded lenses.
