If I remember right it is an RCI with an SA2000 rating. Good solid started helmet that will be good for several years to come. Congrats, the addiction has begun.

Afte schooling you will find you self day dreaming of go fast parts and race rubber.

I have a seat memory for "helmet" use that came from sitting in the driveway trying to find something that worked (damm moon roof) ... I'm sure those in your hood now think you are just as nuts.

You will need to wear it as much as possible to get comfortable with it. I suggest wearing it around the house, and driving as much as possible.

You can never be to safe.

Yes! One big happy racing family. Someone now needs to buy a Class A coach and a big ass trailer so we can all go on racing road trips :devillook

So did you talk the wife into letting you mod the M?

It could be even safer.

Oh ... and after the party and seeing your's Tam was asking today about what it would cost if she got an E46 M3 :help

yeah i got the ok to do it. ima call bmw tomorrow and schedule them to install the rear dif. but jb told me if i got the dinan suspention instead of moton he would "hunt me down and beat me in the head with a tire iron until i said "whos your daddy". ok maybe not exactly those words

He is right. There is much better then Dinan out there.

What good is a warrenty anyway, and suspension won't void it I would not think.

Yea, I'm thinking the wife thinks his new friends are a bad infulence. We are going to have to do another Toy Run soon just to show that we are not all about racing.

This of course would then give buy us more space with loved ones for racing.

The big guys like Jegs.com and Summitracing.com as well as smaller guys like soloracer.com all have them.

Make sure you buy something with an SA2000 rating. Open faces start at about 140ish and you can go to about 400 for a top of the line full face. You can go over 400 if you want but you are into speedway helmets and most of what you are paying for is the aero package, so unless you are driving open wheel cars it is a waste.

Marie's pretty adamant that she will not drive a stick. So, the plan is, next spring I'll start looking for a low mileage 540 that I can mod. That should be a lot of fun and still result in a pretty fast car (which I will only occasionally drive anyway).

$298 School
$249 Helmet

I have a feeling that's just the start, as the ideal harness system for my car appears to involve buying a new seat (GT3) and a harness -- about a $2200 adventure.

I've read that race tires can take 2-5 seconds off the time of a typical autocross course. It shouldn't be much more than $5k for an extra set of wheels and tires for the 996.

chmdrm
05-05-2005, 09:53 PM
You then of course need a lite weight jack and electric impact gun to change them at the track .... or a truck and trailer to do it at home and the tow to the race.

I've almost talked my self into option 1 sadly.

chasmanbmwfan
05-05-2005, 10:53 PM
Do you have a trailer that you can pull with your car to hold the tires?

A trailer hitch -- the ultimate mod!

chmdrm
05-05-2005, 10:57 PM
I have a drag race car that is almost done that will need a full truck trailor combo anyways ... so depending on how much money it takes to finish it I might be towing boy.

I am geting ready to tow my track cars around. I have got me the truck to do it just trying to find something to tow all my stuff that I like.... I dont want a goose neck but might end up geting one..my truck has a shell and a camper so it kinda sucks to have to go with a goose neck. O and if any of you want to go to a school down here in AZ you can stay at my place I also live down the street from PIR :) it funny when nascar comes I get to see all there big rigs drive by.

1 more question: Where do you get the helmets, and how much do they cost?????????

There is a guy out in West Valley (I think) that has pretty good prices. He usually sells his stuff on ebay, but I'm sure you're welcome to go by to try on the helmets(very important). I don't have his email anymore, but if you search helmets in the SLC area on ebay, you'll come across his name.

Makr

Or any motorcycle shop. Wrights on state and about 35th south is good.

I didn't know moto shops sold SA2000 helmets. Do you know which shop has a good selection? I'm probably going to go with a Bell M2, but I'd like to try it on to see how it fits...

chmdrm
05-06-2005, 12:37 PM
Most only sell M helmets that I've seen. Depending on what you are racing, and where, how, you can sometimes get away with an just an M rating.

The difference I think is the M is rated for a single fall off a bike, the SA is rated for multiple wacks while bouncing around inside a flipping car. SA is also fire proof so you can crash and burn while wearing one.

In the end, SA is the way to go for auto sports, people at RMR always bitch about needing X or Y piece of safty equipement for different speeds / times and I never got it. Wise man once said "if you have a $50 head, wear a $50 helmet."

At the speeds most of us hit on the autocross course I don't think there is a need for any helmet, I got a blister once running to pic up cones and that is about it. At the drag strip I've driven cars into the 9s and up to 157 MPH and never gotten so much as a paper cut ... but ...

For those getting ready to come out SCCA requires a helmet (betting for thier insurance) and at RMR you need to run 13.99 or faster to need one (I'd think that from this group that means only the E46 M3 guys might need one as I don't think anyone else would run that fast)
