My friend constantly tries to convince me that the transmission takes oil from the engine and uses the same oil from the engine. Is this true?? Or does it take transmission oil? I just recently purchased my '76 2002, so I'm not too familiar with this. Thanks. :redspot

NO!!! It takes MTL from Redline if it's a manual or any ATF from your local auto parts store if it's auto.

Great, I knew it. I'm going to tell it to my friend. Thanks a million.

No problem, motor oil is much less viscous (thick) than tranny (manual) oil and it is a different formulation

I definitely will, and he claims that he's a 2002 expert. lol. What type of MTF does it take (ie. Dexron, Mercon, etc)?

No, your thinking of ATF (automatic trans fluid). This is different. You can't buy it at most stores. "Redline" makes it.

I was looking at the Haynes Manual and it looks like "Castrol Hypoy Light (80 EP)" which is an old school gear oil. Pretty much it's a GL-4 grade gear oil that is 70w80. Redline MTL is a great substitute. You could probably use any old GL-4 70w80 gear oil in the tranny. What ever you do, don't use a GL-5 gear oil (like Valvoline synthetic, etc) in your GL-4 spec'd tranny. The high sulfur content of GL5 oils will eat up the bronze synchronizers.
It's equivalent to ~10w30 motor oil, but I wouldn't substitute it as it may not have the necessary additives to protect the gears and allow the synchronizers to work correctly.
I used to have a '90 Honda Civic Hatch with a 4 speed manual tranny and that car used 10w30 motor oil in the tranny. I eventually replaced it with Redline MTL. I didn't really notice a difference.

Great, thanks for the info. I'm going to change it today. I bet the MTF hasn't been changed for years. lol.
