I recently purchased an OEM Heater fan for my 1976 BMW 2002. There is sheet metal preventing my hand from reaching the fan. I've heard rumors that it should be changed from the inside??? I have no idea on how to change it, does anybody have any suggestions or advice, or anybody with experience??

Thanks :redspot

Howdy,

For a primer, read this article:

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/body_and_interior/heater_box.html

That should get you going.

Second, on my site I covered a great deal of this also in the March 2004 section. It may have pictures Chris left out of his article, I cannot recall.

Heater Box Refurb on my2002tii.com (http://www.my2002tii.com/mar2004/index.htm)

Good luck!

I've never done it but have read this

I had thought mine was messed up and needed replacement -- thankfully it was just electrical.

The heater box refurbishment may be THE most-dreaded operation one can undertake in an '02 restoration.

scared me a bit. Hope its not that big of a deal for you

edit: Ha -- we must have been writing at the same time

If you REALLY want to change the fan, it's a MAJOR job. Might as well plan to refurbish the entire heater box. If you have air conditioning, its exponentially difficult. I've been putting off refurbinshing my heater box for 10+ years due to the hassle.

Read the links posted previously for information.

I recently completed refubing my heater box, and putting in a fan motor.
Really the job is not as bad as some say. I was a bit nervous at first but once I got into it it really was not that bad. The worst part was the postions you have to get into to get the box in and out of the car.

The only real problem I had was I did not get the fan motor hung right in the box. I had to adjust it some as the blades were rubbing a bit when the motor was on high speed. Works great now!

The new motor will not come with a fan attached so you will have to re use yours.

Rob at 2002haus really helped me along when I had questions and needed the fan motor.
