View Full Version : Is there a lot to be gained w/ported/polished head on supercharged applications?

Just wondering if this mod would have more or less effect on a forced induction setup versus NA.

likely more radical changes on an NA motor, but it will greatly benefit either one.

major porting will require some tuning, but if you just want to clean things up a bit, you will see better response and better power up top.

this is from my limited experience on american V8s.

Polishing and porting heads is always a good thing for more power, efficiency, etc, the only thing to mindful of with mods on an s/c'ed motor is anything that will effect (raise) compression.

The gains keep adding up:
1 atm ~ 402 inH2O
8psi + 1 atm ~ 623.5 in H20

if your flow @ 1 atm = A
if increase flow from porting % = I
you're flow @ 8psi would be = 1.22(A+IA/100)

if you were flowing 614 CFM and making 400 HP your post porting flow @ 10% increase and 8psi would be:
1.22(614+10*614/100)=824

whereas w/o the 8psi:
1.22(614+0*614/100)=749

Note: This is only applicable when boosting from atm to 8psi.

yup, big compression + big blower = big problems

Zenon gave the answer I like to see.

I'd like to add that the blower's speed must be increased to maintain boost... boost is nothing more than a measure of restriction, and with constant airflow and lower restriction you have lower boost. To realize the extra airflow potential you have to spin the blower ever faster. - Beau

I agree totally with Beau and to clarify:
Example #2
I = 0
meaning there was no porting only boost. (sorry it was too early)

To find your Gains w/porting and w/o boost:
flow = A+IA/100

614+10*614/100 = 675.4
