View Full Version : Dinan Vessel vs. M5
chasmanbmwfan 04-26-2005, 10:43 AM Just curious to get feedback on relative advantages and disadvantages of picking up a 540 vs an M5. I'm looking down the road at replacing the Seven with something that my wife could drive, and would like to get something fun and that I could gently mod.
The obvious disadvantage to the M5 is the lack of an automatic transmission (we're talking E39's here, so SMG isn't an option). She can drive a manual, though I'm not sure how crazy she would be about it. Even then, would I be going through clutches every other month?
Also, any estimates on what it would cost to transform a stock 540 into a "Dinan Vessel"? I know that varies widely depending on the extent of mods, but wondering if anyone could suggest some basic Dinan mods to achieve greater performance on a cost-effective basis. Eventually, it seems that the law of diminishing returns sets in, such as when your mods start to exceed the cost of the car -- oops, I think I just offended most of you. :)
Other comments?

euro4life 04-26-2005, 10:53 AM The M5 is just oh-so-sweet. I would buy one of them and leave it stock over modding a 540. What does she say about driving a manual?
"Dinan" and "cost effective" are oxy morons. Please refrain from using them in the same sentence.
I say push for the M5 and buy a 540 as a last minute resort.
Let's see what Johnny says. I am sure he would be driving an M5 if the price was right.
chmdrm 04-26-2005, 11:04 AM The flip side is bang for the buck, if you mod the a 540 you can have some serious fun for less then an M5 might cost.
The only reason I see in most cases to do Dinan parts is that you keep the warrenty, if you are buying used and thus warrenty is not an issue you can get the same or better parts for less money.

yes, if u plan to mod 540i, push for m5 and save you $$ over the long haul

Gandalf is correct. Dinan is expensive, but you shouldn't have warantee issues.

I don't know exactly which Dinan package you are referring to, but I wouldn't call and S2 Modded 540, like Johnny has, gentle... There's a lot of work involved in the S2 package...and It costs $12K just for parts.

True, but it's so much fun... Speaking of diminishing returns, here is a fun fact about the M5. If you were to buy all the Dinan Stuff for it including the S3 package, will cost you another M5.
That's right. You could by another new M5 (w/o any options) for the cost.

From what I gathered from Johnny, His vessel should be a good match for an E46 M3...
So, I'll let Johnny Elaborate on that.

Not sure how that saves money. A 540 + mods I'm betting will be less then an stock M5.
2000 model year with 50K miles:
Good 540 will be about 25K
Good M5 will be about 40K
Even with some serious mods the 540 is cheaper. Not as fast, but still a very fun car, lets you get the auto gear box for the wife.
You could add 10K of mods and have a rocking car and still be 5K under the M5.
sirtiger 04-26-2005, 11:52 AM ^ I am talking about modding to go as fast as a m5 or even faster. Depending on the route u take, I always thought the 540+ with real mods are gonna be quite pricey....perhaps if u r a real DIY, u can save some serious money.... just my guess
chmdrm 04-26-2005, 12:29 PM E39 5 Series (Front and Rear) Stoptech Big Brake Kit $4,995.00
E39 (all, except M5) H&R/Bilstein Sport Suspension $729.00
E39 540 Conforti Cold-Air Intake Kit $359.95
E39 5-series Supersprint Rear Muffler with oval tips $739.95
E39 Supersprint Rear Resonator Replacement $195.65
Total:$7,019.55
Not an M5 but for about 3K less then one you can have a kick ass 540.
SehrSchnell 04-26-2005, 01:01 PM My goal is to get into a M5 within the next 4 years. This was, and has been my plan. Slowly I will get there. However, I must say that I am entirely impressed with my car as it is. My DINAN 5 was less than half the cost of a similar M5. (Granted the previous owner took the hit on the DINAN mods).
I absolutely LOVE the M5. But, let's get to your questions about your WIFES car.
I think the 540i will be very much enjoyed by her. The car will be more than ample for her and any of your little chick-a-dees that wish to take it out for an occasional drive. Maintence is less then an M, but more important here for your needs, is the fact that they come in an automatic.
There are a few mods you can easily do to 540i that spark it up quite a bit. I have the "S" package on mine, which is basically the bottom line of DINAN. It consists of intake, computer program, exhaust, and some other trinkets that include genuine DINAN 70's shag floor mats. There are obviously a few other DINAN things that have been added to my car as well (DINAN flywheel and clutch, additional exhaust parts, etc). The "S" package is ample and would suffice and could be purchased for less than $5k and NOT VOID THE WARRANTY (which is a HUGE point in my book if there is a warranty in effect).
I know there is a TON of differences between a M series vs. non-M, but in my case, the (stock) M5 is only faster 0-60 by less than 3/4 of a second. Yes, I would still buy an M, but my needs are different than your wifes. I am NOT a fan of automatics period, SMG, Tip, Borg Warner, you name, I just do not care for them. (dont freak people, just a matter of personal opinion).
And for the record Ant, it's the E36 M3 that I (the vessel) would rate fairly well against, the E46 M3 would eat my pie hole.
Of course Chas, for some, ok a lot, of dough, one can add the DINAN Supercharger on the vessel and eat all types of pie for lunch such as this fine one! SUPERCHARGED DINAN 540i (http://www.jimmy540i.com/sc540i.mpg)
chasmanbmwfan 04-26-2005, 01:14 PM Thanks Johnny. I've got my eye on an extremely clean, low mile 540 (M series) with steptronic. By low mile, I mean this car is like brand new. The owner has his name on the list for a new M5.
Will Angel drive the M5 when you get it? Curious to know her views on the issue.
Thanks.

Johnny, I thought you had the S2...
Either way, You're Dinan S still sounds the best.
Also, I think the 540 is a better choice for the wifey.
The M5 is stiff, raw and semi-difficult to drive... It pops and burbles with little manners... In other words, It's not for her. :D
Just a thought it would cost more, But the last 1.5 years of the 540 got a sweat package.. well it was standard on the 540. They got M bumpers ( well not 100% its like the 330 with the ZHP package its has a M3 look alike bumper stock). But the door jams have the M emblames on it same with the shifter, nice wheels, Diffrent exuast, they got alot better stuff then the years before of the 540. But It might cost a bit more, But it most likley would be under waranty they made them 2003 year.

In other words, just like her husband.
I think a 540 would be a better choice due to the auto trany, Plus it will most likley be enough car for her. She wouldnt use the M5 to its full potential, but I could be wrong :)

My motivation for looking into the M5 is entirely selfish. Unlike some who can justify owning multiple cars that they personally drive, I'm still trying to justify a "need" for each one.
I would likely steal the M on occasion and attempt to use it to its full potential. The question is whether she would enjoy driving it the rest of the time.
Antwerp 04-26-2005, 01:53 PM If you'd like, You can stop by after hours at my office and see my dads M5, would that help you decide? I think if you do, you'll want one, so choose careful. :D

See I dont have this problem if I said to my wife M5 or 540 what would you rather have I know she would say The M. She really wants the new M6... Maybe someday :)

Well I just posed the question to Angel after explaining this thread. She graciously stated, "I would prefer to the drive the Manual M5!!!".
I love her.
chasmanbmwfan 04-26-2005, 08:50 PM Has she ever considered taking on a second husband?

BIMMERBOYZ 04-26-2005, 09:18 PM The last years of the 540 did get a nice package but 97 and 98 were underated the 282 is not correct. They came with a more powerful engine I don't know exact numbers but more then the 02 03 which came with 290 instead of the earlier years 282. For the wife 545i is that an option find a new one but used. Unless you don't like the look but 325 hp that is 71 lower then a M5. I would go with the M5 for me 540i or 545i for the wife. :redspot
chasmanbmwfan 04-26-2005, 09:23 PM I just popped the question to Marie: "Would you rather have a 540i or an M5, knowing that the 540 is automatic and the M5 is manual?"
"If I happen to have to talk on the phone and drink my fruit smoothie, I don't want to also have to be shifting gears."
"But dear, what about the sacrifice of all of the extra performance characteristics of the M5"
"Well that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make."
"But mom," says Chase, "Haven't you ever wanted to rip it up in a parking lot?"
(no response)
Maybe Angel could organize a wife's luncheon and go through some of these issues.
BIMMERBOYZ 04-26-2005, 09:34 PM I have to ask is the 740i just to old for you to keep That car could take some tasteful mods and be fast same engine as the 540i. How much are you looking at to spend what color preffered. Hey Chase Mothers day is coming up try to influence her then ;) . If I was in Chase's position I would kissing the ground my Mom walked on to try to convince her.

The Dinan Vessel has inspired me. It can pass as a luxury car and a sports car. Besides, the Seven is starting to show its age. The interior has definitely lost its luster and it will never be the rocket that a 540 is or could be.

Johnny's car is an awesome automotive machine, but he said it himself. The next upgrade is an M5.
e39 M5 and teach the wife to drive a stick. :)
You buy the car and we'll teach her

hey sweety.. whatcha wearin right now?? mmm.. got a pic? :love
SehrSchnell 04-27-2005, 09:23 PM Stock M5 > any modded 540i.
Except of course this one. (http://www.jimmy540i.com/sc540i.mpg) ;)
Cameron Hauck 04-27-2005, 09:28 PM I honestly would take a stock M5 over the Jimmy540i guy's car, it is insainly fast, but an M5 is an M5 and it's the Flagship of the ///M's. I don't think I could go from an ///M to a non ///M car unless it was for finacial reasons. Just my train of thought though. If your wife won't drive stick then a 540i is probably the right choice. Both are fun cars know matter what you get.
chasmanbmwfan 04-27-2005, 09:41 PM I haven't driven a stick for a long time myself. Today I found myself stranded at work with no car and needing to run an errand. I borrowed my partner's 325is and was reminded how difficult it is to drive, talk on the phone, and shift. Thus, I think my own preferences tend towards an automatic/tip/step/SMG-type of tranny.
If I had to guess right now, I'd say we'll end up replacing the Seven with a 540i/steptronic.

Then it was right back to the pinto with the racing hood.

Lest you think I spoil that kid rotten, he didn't have the Rover (insufficient grades last term).
I took the rover in to get the bumper and broken fog light replaced and got a lift to work from the shop that did the work.
Everyone is home now, though, safe and sound.
