I can tell you this, I beat a 911 carrera *automatic* pretty badly by the end of third gear.

depends on how good your skills are vs his skills...

The mfg. & auto mag. numbers favor the M3, but the #'s are still close. You should be fairly even, but the advantage will go to the better driver.

those are the responses i was expecting, i think im the better driver, but who knows.....

also he has 19 inc champion chrome wheels vs. my LM's,,,,would that make a difference?

and whos car is heavier?

Your car is quite a bit heavier...Carrera weighs from 3100-ish to 3240 for the Carrera 4s.

BMW lists the M3 Coupe at 3415lbs

jake....already racing? The former owner would be pissed if he found out you were ragging the car already! :)

Don't mention your Bilstein setup, dial it down beforehand, and invite him to the back roads....you're certain to catch him off guard in the twisties.....

So how does the car look? As good as promised?

i know right? he kind of challenged me so I told him we would go at this weekend.

But yeah right, the old owner took care of it, but I know he drove it how it was suppose to be driven.

The car looks immaculate, the only thing I could find was one little knick on the hood and one small spot on the leather. But to me it is perfect!

Sweet....you definetly got a good deal and should have no regrets. I promised I would be super strict on my requirements, one of which was to stay under $40k, but that car sure did tempt me! Glad it worked out for you. After driving mine for a week, I realize I need to work on my launches and from 1st to 2nd with DSC off. I shifted pretty hard from 1st to 2nd the other day, DSC kicked in and really took me down a few notches. I would shoo him off for a couple of weeks while you 'learn' your car, then give him a run he won't soon forget.....

I raced a 4S and was pulling on him, but then again those are slower than just S's.

looks like you found one pretty quick as well?

SG was my first choice, and 40k was my limit too, but when I saw this one after you showed it to me, it was love at first sight........

Definately need to racer w/ DSC off. The car is much quicker. DSC is a great street safety feature, but it is too limiting on the track

to get completely off topic, Jake, I had a dealer put a clear bra on the car before I picked it up and it's pretty sweet. Covers the front part of the hood, and the entire front bumper and air dam, they even put peices on the mirror. Since your paint is perfect, it might be worth considering....did you even notice it in my pics?

that is something i thought about, what is the going price for that? I imagine its the "3M clear bra"?

He gave me a bra which I thought I would use on long trips, but I would consider the clear bra. Does it have any long term affects to the paint for staying on thre?

I would recommend Speed Design in Md (about 20 minutes from Towson). I had my clear bra down there. John Bruning is the person to speak with.

a) your car is slow -- there are much faster cars than the M3. In a carrera match-up ... stock v. stock -- driver's match. However, your car is heavy -- I would say very heavy ... I guarantee it is MORE than 3415 lbs. I did everything I could to lighten my car, and it was still around 3296 without driver (aftermarket seats, brakes, full exhaust, removal of rear seat, removal of m-mobility kit, basically, entire rear was stripped to the bare metal, etc).

Most M3's are weighing in around 3400 WITHOUT driver.

b) your car is slower -- you have 19" wheels = the suxor at racing.

c) you have PSS9's -- again, the suxor for racing. You want a softer suspension for racing in a straightline.

This guy is racing on the street, leave DSC on ... he is not taking it to "the track" as some people put it ... from what it sounds like, he's never been on a track. If he has, he would realize no sense in doing something foolish on the street ...

FUCK the clear bra! Have one, its a nightmare! It turns yellowish, then its pulled so tight that if something hits it, three is no flex, so things just crack. Example, a little something that was on the road that a normal m3 could hit and have no problem, hit my car right around the foglight area, and since there was no give, the whole area cracked all up. The whole foglight area looks like the cracked sh*t, DONT DO IT

jake - I don't know what the BMW dealer charges, but I paid just under $600 here in CT (including 6% sales tax) for the entire front (bumper, all the front lights, front fendors, hood and mirrors). I've had it all winter with no problems (though I haven't driven it much b/c I have a company car to drive when it's nasty). The shop that installed it told me to use the same cleaner you use on plastic convertible rear windows to clean it and also boat polish/wax to shine it up. So far it has kept very clean with just the same soap I use to wash the rest of the car.

It is really nice to see that the front of my car has not gotten any real paint chips on it, and it make me cringe less when a truck kicks up sand and crap because their too close to breakdown lane.

Enjoy,
Mark

Not sure I understand how a plastic clear bra can be so tight it affects the pyhsics of an impact on the painted surface it's adhered to??? Any physicist care to tackle that one?

As for the yellowing, I think there have been vast improvments in the past several years. I spent all day last week helping a friend get the clear bra off his S4 after having been in place well over 5 years. He unfortuneately waited too long and the plastic had become brittle making it infinetly more difficult to remove...but guess what? He's already schedule an appointment to have another one installed...zero dents, dings, or paint chips in his hood in the area that bra was applied.

As for cost, my dealer had a local shop do the install before I picked it up, and passed their 'discount' onto me. I paid $400, and will probably have it replaced in 3-4 years.....don't wait for it to yellow and crack, make the uninstall a PITA.

'01 996 had "only" 300 HP; it went up to 320 starting in '02. Although his car is >300 pounds lighter than yours, you should edge him out...although with rear weight bias, he'll likely pull you from a dig up to 50 or so. Have fun.

driver's race. Both cars are virtually identical in terms of straight line speed.
