View Full Version : did you see/have any incidents or accidents at bimmerfest?
LeftCoastBias 04-24-2005, 11:30 PM just wondering if anyone here saw of, or had, any incidents with anyone or any other cars at bimmerfest?
any accidents (i know there was one white e36 that found itself in a ditch...)?
tell me about it, if you did.
m34ever 04-24-2005, 11:34 PM a red euro m roadster got pulled over on the norcal caravan for weaving in and out of cones right infront of a CHP officer, they got off with a small ticket though. Also like you said a white e36 is probaly totaled from sliding into a curb on the freeway. I heard also someone hit the center divide trying to avoid someone who was weaving on the freeway in a LSB m3.

slickav 04-25-2005, 12:24 AM I was inches away front rear ending RedV and getting smashed from behind by a semi..... I literally started sweating when I saw it coming up in my rear view when I was mashing my brakes for all they were worth.
StarReaver 04-25-2005, 12:35 AM Did anyone happen to see or have pics/footage of a silver ///M coupe cutting off a semi, blasting across the dirt, and almost sideswiping an Estoril and another red bimmer on the Hope Ave exit in the morning? If so, show please! If not... just as good. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/Hitokiri_StarReaver/Random/icon_ninja.gif
LWRNCE 04-25-2005, 12:36 AM Yeah... Guy got a ticket for Autocrossing the construction zone hhaaha... Well it was nice seing you guys again. If I saw you but didnt say watsup sorry... You suck j/p Oh yeah JP nice seing you again bro take it easy.
But yeah people including myself were getting ready to rain down on that idiot with the Gripspeed stickers for trying to whip it in the lookout area during the Post Bimmerfest drive.
LWRNCE 04-25-2005, 12:46 AM Oh yeah Sat night at Holiday inn... A couple of latina chicks were skinny dippin in the pool.
Don Nguyen 04-25-2005, 12:50 AM I almost got into two accidents on the way home, both of which were not my fault.
1) I was driving down the lane when a 18 wheeler decides that he doesnt want to exit or it is the wrong one and not only does he cut into my lane and he is at the point where he shouldnt legally be allowed to cross but he also doesnt signal. I get literally 1 foot away from the back of his trailor thing before hitting it, I was so glad my ABS kicked in and worked. I bet he probably either would of just kept going too with his type of attitude or wouldnt of even felt it.
2) Nearing home someone starts turning into my lane when I was right next to him and I had to swerve into the carpool lane (good thing there were no cars in it at the time near me) to avoid him. As soon as it was clear I went back out and he acted like nothing happened.
LeftCoastBias 04-25-2005, 12:51 AM Oh yeah JP nice seing you again bro take it easy.

DancingBenzos 04-25-2005, 01:06 AM I saw the Accident involving the Malibu or Taurus hit the center divider on the caravan up to SB from LA. I looked in my rear view and i see it happen. All i see is the car go sideways like its powersliding, and then bam into the center median. Didnt look taht bad though, id say a maybe 10-20 mph hit at most. I dont know how it happened i only saw it happen from my rear view. i know we had come to some extremem braking right before it happened, and i was worried the lifted green F150 would hit me.

Deloriant 04-25-2005, 01:53 AM I got rear ended by some guy behind me in a white e30. No scratches or dents though! :)

If anyone out there knows these people (or other people doing dumb stuff on the road rally), feel free to kick their @ss - and then tell why you're doing it.
That's the kind of stuff that can give the event a bad reputation and end the road rally for good. After years of trying to convince the Roundel and chief editor Satch Carlson that Bimmerfest was an event worth covering, he finally attended this year. I sure hope he didn't see much of that crap and leave thinking that his first instincts about Bimmerfest had been right all along.

Hopefully - but as Bimmerfest gets bigger, things that happen are going to reach a wider audience. For example, Bimmerfest made the Grand Am Cup Racing news articles. And now that it's not just a small group of people that know each other getting together, you never know who is going to be there as a guest/participant.
Like an off duty CHP that had this to say:
"This was definitely the last road rallye that I will participate in. The amount of stupidity behind the wheel was more than I can bear. I would like to thank the 330 that passed me using the right shoulder and throwing rocks and debris all over my car which has recently been painted. I work hard for my money, put alot of time and effort and more money into my cars and this is what I get. See you all in the parking lot next year but not on the road."
I hope he sees that same 330 driving on the highway somewhere and nails him for doing something stupid. And you think the whole CHP won't find out about these 'incidents'?
Sorry to rant, but I just don't get it. I don't get how a few people just can't be adults and go along with the program (of trying to disprove the public stereotype of BMW drivers) for a couple of days (and we are talking about a few as most 'festers behave very well on the highways). And how they can be so stupid - the CHP and local authorities know the event is going on. It's not like we're sneaking up on anybody.

you must not have noticed that the majority of the most insanely modded e46 m3's were driven by 19 year olds...
kids and their daddy's money...

Matteu 04-25-2005, 03:25 AM That white E36 was Ian, one of the AZBMW guys. He had a wheel shipped overnight to cali so that his car would be in tip top shape for the show. On the cruise, some idiot in an E46 cut him off and he was forced to swerve into the median. The right front suspension snapped and sent him sailing into the ditch. What happened was bull shit. All the guys who just got back were talking about what was lost during the trip.
PS. I hope Ian get's his car back into running and clean looking shape again. (they think it's totalled)

So is this genious E46 driver a member of our forum --and did he offer to pay Ian's way back home?

I think he needs to be. It's bad enough that someone got taken out and could have been seriously injured, but to be taken out by one of our own with no apology or remorse? unacceptable.

I was walking back to my car (parked on the lot) and I saw a guy and a woman checking out my seats. My boyfriend and I started talking to them for awhile and it turns out he was Satch Carlson. He seemed really interested in my car and myself, and even gave me his email. Coolio. :cool

Of course he was!! You have bascially modded/improved every aspect of your car --I can think of threads you've made talking about everything from headliners to steering racks. And the fact that you do all this stuff yourself, and are so knowlegeable at a young age makes you very interesting to a jounalist/enthusiast like Satch. ;)
raoke 04-25-2005, 04:14 AM 330 driver... what an asshole
and like you said.. word gets out to chp all around cali, so that might be the breaking point, as when you get pulled over, whether the cop is going to be cool with you or not.

e30sd 04-25-2005, 10:39 AM quoted from teh land of e30
whoever wasn't there missed seeing an E36 get seriously airborne while trying to do one of the most jackass moves I've ever seen on a freeway. Hope they're OK, but they almost collected about 20 other cars on the way out...
 Care to elaborate?
On the really, there was a highway we were supposed to take off the 101...the CHP had a new M3 and 645 pulled over, and we were all paying attention to them, so this giant chunk of us missed the turnoff. On the 101, every few hundred yards it has those left turn lanes that dive off into cutouts through the center median so people can turn around, since the exits are so few and far between. When this guy in the E36, who was in the RIGHT lane, realized he missed the turn like all of us, he cut off the car to his left (we were all doing 70) by a few inches trying to get to one of the cutoffs. Put simply, there was no fucking way he was ever gonna make it into there. He couldn't brake till he had maybe 50 feet of pavement left, and there was another car sitting in the cutoff waiting to turn around, and there was oncoming traffic in the other lanes, and he was FUCKED. He was probably still doing 40-45 when he ran over the foot-high slanted curb that surrounds the median, and yes, that was just as dramatic as it sounds. That car made the worst sound I've ever heard a car make (I think he must have given himself the "shaved oilpan" mod), and I saw about 4 feet of daylight and shrubbery under the car til it remembered how much it weighed and dumped back onto the ground, scattering dirt, weeds and broken pieces of Germany's finest all over the damn place. blew the bodywork on the front end apart pretty good, and i'll bet that wasn't the end of it (see above mod comment).
If he'd have clipped the car that he cut off, that one would've t-boned the other car waiting in the cutoff and sent it out into oncoming traffic, and we all woulda had a real mess on our hands...
he hadn't even hit the curb yet when I started wondering how he was going to explain all of this to the insurance company.

You had your chance, the E36 is now retiring into the garage until next Bimmerfest. :rolleyes
DancingBenzos 04-25-2005, 01:22 PM If this CHP guy lets one incident spoil his moment then he shouldnt go to any car events. He should know as a CHP Officer there are always 1 or 2. :nono
active9x 04-25-2005, 01:47 PM 94is-kim , I loved your car at bmfest. So fresh and so clean clean.
I didn't really see any bad driving. The people I drove around were curtious and drove at a nice safe rate of speed the whole time. I loved it.
BabyM 04-25-2005, 02:55 PM Thanks. :) Whatever happened to your plans of coming out? I was expecting to see you. :az
I was verrrry close to driving out --BabyM got waxed and everything but the correlated plans fell through :( (I was trying to combine this trip with a couple otehr things to make it 'legitimate')
And though I am the queen of drive-through-the-night-roadtrips across the country 30 hours each way for a meet was a little too much even for me ;)
I should be out to CA again in the near future and I will definitely give you a heads up!

Yeah I was near the bottom of the "on" ramp as he turned left. We saw that and were just waiting for him to crash then ready to pull him out of his car and beat his @ss. I mean what kind of sh!t was that??? This isn't some hot import night's event featuring the drifting idiot....If you guys only knew how close he was to going to jail....just minutes before there was a chp car parked to the right of the "off" ramp for a good 10 minutes+ just making sure everyone was fine and not doing anything stupid.
Well anyways was a great event and hopefully no one got hurt.. I did hear about that accident with the white m3 and I heard that the guy who caused it DID leave the scene.....

The first part of the message referred to the guys who were peeling out doing (doing donuts) just off the offramp under the freeway at the first meeting point......between the rows of parked bmws with people in the streets :nono taking pictures of the other cars.
The picture was one i found of the incident with the m3 but over heard a friend of the guy who crashed say the guy who caused the accident didnt stop and split.

Now THIS has got to be the real story about the Alpine E36. The CHP pulled over the 645ci and another car, and I heard a lot of chatting on the radio that they would have to miss the exit, so a lot of those guys did. The car I was in made it off just fine, and we were only pulled off to take some pictures since we would be continuing on Northbound 101 to go home. So once all the cars had left we got back on 101, north and our radar detector started flipping out so we slowed, and right there in the center turnout were two CHP stopped next to that alpine E36 that was pictured a few posts ago. It didn't look to be in good shape. Looked like he had overestimaded his ability to take the turn, and understeered straight into the ditch in the center of the freeway. There was also an E46 M3 that was stopped that was heading on 101 South to help him out.

Some bum tried to clean my windshield at a gas station in a ghetto part of town. He kept calling me "his man". I finally convinced him I had no cash. He didn't want to talk to me anymore and left the station alltogether. Then I walked over to a vending machine and bought a soda.
Later, I was taking an offramp. Some Mexican guy jumped out right in front of my car, I had to hit my brakes hard. He was holding two hats and speaking spanish in hyperspeed. I couldn't tell if he was begging for money or selling hats. I just kept shaking my head and saying "I'm sorry". :dunno

What's hilarious about the 'hat guy' incident is I had the exact same thing happen to me about 6 months ago...
It was a decent event, I didn't see any accidents (I heard about the taurus/median over the radios, but it was behind us)... Didn't see any bimmers pulled over either (but saw several other pickups/suvs/etc. pulled over)... I wish I had stayed for the cruise, but it didn't seem terribly organized (eg someone said it left at 2PM, but we were all hanging out at the dealership for the raffle until ~3:30PM)... ended up just going to freebirds by UCSB and then taking the 101 south home, although we (my friend & I) bumped into the blue-flamed supercharged E46 M3 on the way and had some fun (140mph fun)... also ran into a pack of E30's that were without radios (or didn't want the company of the dakar & hellrot E36 M3's)...
I saw the C32 teckademics car, but didn't see Sean anywhere? After all the effort put into having a 'burrito assassin' shirt made... kind of a downer :(

Scorp965 04-25-2005, 11:22 PM I was told there would be a booth, I showed up in my dakar M3 (which I have owned for ~1wk now) and poked around but found nobody/nothing... I had a 'burrito assassin' shirt for half the day, then switched it out with a bimmerfest shirt... went to freebirds & had a burrito, and called it a day ;-)

If that was you (I don't know how many cars may have Gripspeed decals), thank you for contributing to what will probably be the last road rally.
It's that kind of activity that gets the public calling into the CHP and reporting "those damn BMW drivers".
You would think 'supposedly' intelligent BMW enthusiasts (I talking about all of us) could set a good example for just a few hours once a year. I don't think it's asking that much.

I don't have mine anymore - sold it a little while back - just waiting to get an S54 M Coupe before I update my avatar :)
Hadn't heard anything about the M Roadster incident.
Hopefully we can come up with some kind of a solution - I'd hate to lose the road rally. Losing that would turn Bimmerfest into just another car show.

Exactly.. the norcal Caravann was a huge group on the way to Santa barbara... We had a total of 3 cars that were driving stupid. A e36 328i white euro front plate, A e36 328i black with blacked out taillights, And I heard about them roadster auto-xing the construction cones even though it was tempting... it was a wise decision not to do that.
We had a group discussion, Keith, Alan, Ben and a couple of other guys. We were just gonna start reportin them to CHP. As long as we werent doing anything stupid like cutting people off and shiet like that we werent gonna get in pulled over. I remember when both big rigs were occupying both lanes the white 328i sedan stradle both lanes and was acting stupid...
I vouche for this... You see someone wreckless driving write down their plates and report it to CHP. We cannot stop the idiots from going on the drive but what we can do is make them pay for their actions.

were you with me and the black 528i, two E36 M3s both black, one convertible i believe, and a few other 3 series? This damn excursion cut off our pack of like 10 cars on purpose and then slowed down to id say 50 MPH!!!! :mad I was thinking about cutting in between at any time because im the smallest car in the pack and id make it with alot of room, slowing her ass down and then letting our pack pass on the right. Then we had some flamer in a V6 mustang think he was fast, he found out what German power means when he got passed by everyone in our pack, and then he decided to do a ricer flyby and go like 130 through traffic trying to weave on a V6 mustang suspension. Im suprised he didnt spin out. SoCal caravan rules though. Everyone was letting each other out. We all clicked well ont he highway, but i think more of us need to get radios for the next one.

heezyo2o 04-26-2005, 05:25 PM On the really, there was a highway we were supposed to take off the 101...the CHP had a new M3 and 645 pulled over, and we were all paying attention to them, so this giant chunk of us missed the turnoff.

Definitely agree. I saw little to no stupidity as the passenger. The people speeding were risking it...and a few of them got what they deserved. I think the only stupid thing I saw was an Estoril E36 M3 try to pull a somewhat out of control burnout in the crowded Refugio exit. Considering there were probably 500+ cars that attended Bimmerfest, the number of reported incidents is relatively low.

My deepest apologies go out to everyone who could have been involved, and to those right now who want to strangle me for doing what I did.
takes a big man to admit that in such a manner. e-props :clap

I accept your apology, Atleast you were able to get on here and note your actions... I mean its cool to drive fast heck I was the one chasing you in the white 3 series when it opened up into two lanes, and your passenger looked back at me lol. That shiet sounded mean too.
LWRNCE 04-26-2005, 07:36 PM It sux no one said wsup to me :( The only ones who did was ty and the AZ group. I guess my norcalBMW shirt made the socaler's mad. Ah, but it's never too late for a 2nd chance. Next year help set the good example and spread the word for people to drive safe. :)
Vitolo 04-26-2005, 08:42 PM The last rally in CA I was on, I witnessed the aforementioned Imola E46 M3 go up in flames less than 30sec after the accident, so needless to say I was very wary of going on a run with SO many cars...
I felt very safe riding with Kim(94is) though, and i'm surprised there were not more incidents. I guess "it could have been worse"... disappointing though that we have to expect people to be stupid, I don't know what there is to prove... :confused
Unfortunately before we got in the car I asked her wonder who would wreck their car on the run....looks like GOT BMW won the prize. Bummer.

Man yeah he beat me... But the only thing was I had a full interior. He had no rear interior everything was bare. We went from I believe it was 70-100. 70-80 even,85-95 he would pull when we hit a hundred that is when I started to catch up. Then he shut it down saying... man I never go over 100mph. I deemed him ghey.

Then I turn into rick james BIATCH! Iwas gonna go commando loco on that guy whippin it in the turnout. Yes, originally I was. Unfortunately, rain was forecast, so I slept in a little later.
Imagine my surprise when I woke up at 6:30AM and saw a beautiful day.
I wound up going to the Crystal Cove meet, which only runs from 7AM to 9AM each Saturday,(http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56817) as I am promoting an event right now called "The Stampede" and I really needed some face time with potential participants.
Besides...my car would have beat your car in the construction cone slalom, so be glad I didn't go. ;)

I was too busy gawking at how many of us clogged the highways to awknowledge any individual car.
Ah, but it's never too late for a 2nd chance. Next year help set the good example and spread the word for people to drive safe. :)I'll be sure to do that. I was scared sh*tless after that stunt I pulled. I wanted to get out of the car as soon as possible onto non-moving ground, and when I finally stopped, my passenger jumped out and kissed the pavement in the parking lot. I was close to doing the same thing, but I've got OCD and didn't want to touch the dirty ground.

Well, after the amount of complaints I've been seeing on the boards about how my car did not belong on the lot, I'm thinking about actually doing some stuff to it before next year (like washing it at the very least :stickoutt). Funny how nobody said anything about it or that '02 that looked even rougher than my car last year when we were at EWSG, but this year some people got REAL butt hurt that an e21 that is used (and abused) more than most other BMW's was out on the lot. Oh well, it is a classic (by Jon's definition) and also had more mods than a lot of the e36 and e46 cars that were also allowed on the lot. So what if I didn't wash it, it isn't JUST a car show.
Ah screw it....let's just get the whole SD crew showing up in beaters from hell. Kim can drive her e30, Neil Daily can drive his newly aquired 325es (formerly known as Tim's "Ghetta"), and I'll let someone else drive my 318is that is having some tranny issues. I guess the closer to the boarder you get, the worse off the rides are, huh? ;)

http://touchngo.com/ap/html/ap-1745.htm
These changes were
precipitated by the Satch Carlson case. [Fn. 6] Carlson, an
Anchorage high school teacher, had been charged with two counts of
sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree [Fn. 7] and one count
of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree [Fn. 8] after he
had sex with a seventeen-year-old student. [Fn. 9] The statutes in
effect at that time prohibited adults from having sex with sixteen-
and seventeen-year-old minors entrusted to their care "by authority
of law." [Fn. 10] Superior Court Judge Karl S. Johnstone
determined that this language prohibited sex with children in this
age bracket by legal guardians, but not by teachers. [Fn. 11]

I saw the crash of ian's car... the one in the photos. I do think that these two stories are about the same occurance. They are just two sides of the story. I admit that the LSB m3 was a little out of control too. But this was the same car, it wasnt two crashes. There were a few others of us that stoped to help. I stopped with Dakare36, and Dakarz3 as well. But when the CHP stopped they made us leave. They said that we were causing more trouble being there.
