View Full Version : ASA AR1's Black w/Machined Lip or Silver w/Machined Lip
ParadigmGuy 04-22-2005, 09:01 PM I'm getting new wheels. ASA AR1's in 18x8 up front and 18x9 in the rear. I'm having trouble deciding between the Black w/Machined lip and the Silver w/Machined Lip. My wife likes the silver, but I think the black will be easier to keep clean and will look better overall.
Here are a couple pictures. Opinions welcomed.

Keep in mind the car will have over 650 RWHP. It'll also be getting a slight drop with Tein SS Coilovers also.
AlpneM3 04-22-2005, 09:35 PM i think black. ur car already looks sick but when lowered with these rims WOW it will look great!! GL with ur choice
I need to see the black ones on a black car first. No one seems to have that set-up.
Daved 04-22-2005, 09:45 PM Silver f0 sh0 :)
donald1476 04-23-2005, 02:03 AM i'm actually ordering the black ones soon
forrest 04-23-2005, 03:53 AM black
I am thinking about getting these as well.
Loud_TIGER 04-23-2005, 10:44 AM im getting black ones so u have to get the silver ones
blakbimmer 04-23-2005, 06:36 PM your car is black, interior is black.....rims need to be black. I think the black w/ the polished lips would give your car a classy "race" look to it, especially with that turbo setup
Drifter 04-23-2005, 07:44 PM I think some lighter and better wheels on this car. You spent so much on the turbo stuff, why not get some high quaity wheels on a nice car?
fabby318 04-23-2005, 09:30 PM FYI, the ASA's are quality wheels. IMHO, black AR1's= :eyecrazy / silver AR1's= :embarrasm

I'm having my BBS RK's painted semi-gloss black as I type. Leaving the lips silver. Should look good on my Sterling Grey E39.
Go for it!
gerry_miranda 04-25-2005, 12:21 PM I had dark centers and polished lips on my wheels for some time. Although I really liked it when I first put it on, after 6 months I took it out. It now seems a little too "ricey" (sorry about the term) and played out. Every other "IMPORT Car" I see has dark rims and polished lips.
I changed them to classic BBS lines thats silver.
auto_pilot 04-25-2005, 12:30 PM I voted Silver...they will POP more...
Maybe Black w/polished lip...maybe.
eXpLiCiT 04-26-2005, 01:05 AM I think the color of the car makes a big difference. IMO non-black dark colors go with the silvers. For light colors or black go with the black w/polished lip. Also, if its a light color you have to have some contrast like black moldings or tinted windows.
m3mark 04-26-2005, 01:32 AM Another vore for the black AR1's. Black car with black whels is a great combo. Have you checked out the SSR SP1's?
WTFCIRCUS 04-26-2005, 03:13 AM The AR1s look sweet I need some pics come on people.
///MacDaddy 04-26-2005, 05:16 AM No doubt about it....BLACK! I'm considering the same.

I was deciding between black AR1s and SSR sp1 both will look great, I went with the SP1s with 255s allaround.
ParadigmGuy 04-26-2005, 07:25 PM I still haven't decided, but looking at some pictures I think I'll go with black face and machined lip. Now I just need to think of a good license plate. :)
resisTm3 04-26-2005, 09:43 PM the black arent even out yet :(

17x9 R - 6/01
18x8 - 5/16

Tochenzo 04-27-2005, 08:45 PM im looking at the same rims, and i love the black ones
sandsrfr 04-27-2005, 09:48 PM I'm a sucker for photoshop.... As much as I want some black rims on my car, everytime I photosim them, I like the look of my RGRs more, even tho I am tired of them... :confused
Anyways... Here goes... some black ASA AR1's on my black 94 325is
This is an animated .gif that rotates from the 17" RGRs, to 17" ASA's to 18" ASA's:

straight6pwr 04-27-2005, 10:51 PM my freind josh just got some ar1s this last summer for his 5er. IMO they look good either way on a black car. maybe you should get them silver and then if you change your mind you can get them painted :dunno
anyways heres his car for reference on how they actually look (17x8, 17x9 R):

the 18"s look great.
For the money, I'd suggest getting the BBS RKs TireRack has on special for $381 a wheel or so. There is something about the ASA AR1s I simply don't like... I was 99% toward ordering them, then I decided to go for something more german... You'll see, once I finally figure out what tires I will get :devillook
Turbo ///M50 04-29-2005, 10:39 AM The ASA's are exact copies of BBS RS GT's ???

No, the AR1's look much better, more clean.
straight6pwr 04-29-2005, 09:52 PM They look good, but his car sits too high. :)
hey, give us poor college kids who are paying for their education a break :D
The ASA's are exact copies of BBS RS GT's ???
Nah, they're not exact. I've had both in my hands and while very similar, the BBS RS-GTs are a much nicer wheel - multipiece, diamond finish (dark silver), thinner spokes, etc, etc...
Loud_TIGER 04-30-2005, 02:49 PM does anyone know how much it would cost to polish the lips on the black ASAs? $75 a wheel sound reasonable?

The lips are polished (I think).
