I'm quite new to mechanics and that sort of thing but I'm going to be restoring my dad 71' 02 that he bought in 76'. Unfortuantlly, he started working on it in the mid 90's but never really finished anything on it. Eventually we moved and he sent it off to "storage." Its been sitting outside for probably 5\6 years and probably hasnt been touched since then. All the nasty fluids are still in there as well. What exactly, when i look over it, should i look for specifically? I'm looking at an engine rebuild if it needs one. Any help will be welcome. Thanks.

Welcome!!!

There is a book (I always plug this book cos it's great)
Bmw '02 Restoration Guide (Paperback)
by Mike MacCartney

There are some used ones on amazon for $18 -- this book will give you good info on all the systems, what to check for, how to fix stuff.. lots of pics and diagrams.

When I bought my 74 it was in the glove box -- i was pretty happy it was there.

let us know how it goes and feel free to ask specific questions -- a lot of smart 02ers on here

Its probaly going to need brake work. Drain all the fluids )trans, engine, diff, BRAKE FLUID. Refill.

Replace all the fuses and relays.

Theres some many things I did to mine that I cant think off the top of me head.

Thanks guys. I will try to get ahold of that book. Thanks for the tip on that. The main question is...well i've heard stories of people finding old bimmers in barns and such. They replace the fuses, oil, etc., and they start right off. Is this just a stroke of luck or am i almost guaranteed to have the engine seize up as soon as i try to crank it?

-As long as it has oil and the pump works, it prob. will not seize. No guarantees at all with old cars.
