I lost the only key to my car last night to my e38 740il and am in the process of searching everybodies car and house i know...Does anybody have any idea what i should do if i cant find it. The dealer where i bought my car only had that one copy of the key and i was realy stupid and never made a copy of the key. If anyone finds my keys :rolleyes or can suggest any great ideas on how to fix this problem it would be much appreciated :help

The only option will be to take the VIN, photo ID, and money ($$$!) to a dealer. If you are not the owner, the owner will need to appear with ID.

Even if you find the key, you may want to do this to get a spare.

Good luck!

www.streetkeys.com is where I got mine. Just had to fax my registration to them. $80.00 USD for a 1993 740 IL

I don't think they have a key for the E38 (95-01) 7er.

Ok I remember the last I used the key was to get somehting out of the trunk. I possibly my have left the key in the trunk and closed it. Is there anyway to get into the trunk without the key with the doors locked????? I tried pushing the button and it wouldnt open the trunk.....grrr....!!

That is exactly why its a good idea to unlock the doors instead of using just the trunk button. That way, it would be impossible to lock your key in the trunk.
Go to the dealer and order yourself a new key.

They worked great for me, even got a couple of Fobs. But like dude pointed out, don't know if they do those fancy E38 keys with all the programming stuff.

Dude here, :)

If you plug in any later model 7er on their website, it says that key is not available from them. Looks like a good resource for other cars, but not these, I'm afraid.

khajdiddy, I think the dealer is your only bet. If all you want is an extra and you don't care about a full master as a second key, you can get the smaller ones for less. Otherwise, I think they are $120-140.

Remember also that the key is more than just the key. It has the remote door and trunk lock and unlock transmitter. Even if you could get the key cut properly (probably not likely), you'd still have to go to the dealer to get that working.

and order a new key. BMW will cut a key based on your car's VIN.

Also, if you don't need a master key (which includes the remote buttons) which is expensive...I'd suggest getting either the general key (#9) or the spare key (#11) (see & get the part numbers from the online parts database)...this is a lot less expensive alternative...besides YOU NEED A SPARE KEY so that this doesn't happen again! :nono The "service key" only works in the door lock and ignition...it won't operate the glove box and trunk lock...this is also known as the "valet" key.

Good luck.
