Okay
I am attempting to get an updated bmw key for my 95 740i i want the one with the colored logo in the center but i went to Richmond BMW today and they told me that they weren't sure if that could be done. i was wondering if anyone has done it and if it is a simple reprogram or are the two different keys on different frequecies? any input will help :)

no it is not a simple reprogram procedure. I think they may be on the same frequency. You can check out what frequency they are on at the online parts database...look under BODYWORK (main group) / FRONT DOOR (sub group) ...then scroll down to the diagram that has the front door lock and keys :

Keys for the e38 with the blue roundel in the ctr (triangular shaped key) are recharged when they are inserted into the ignition...the older black rubber head key uses replaceable batteries. Also, the newer triangular key hold more info in it chip...it can be inserted into a reader and current mileage, VIN, and perhaps some other info can be retrieved from it. If your car is an earlier mfg e38...it doesn't have this capability to use the newer key.

But if you have the money or knowledge...anything can be done. Is it worth the time, money, and effort to make something work that wasn't meant to be...you be the judge. :cool

I just bought a new key for my '01. Cost me $164 with programming. It's not a cheap key :(
