View Full Version : Is Summit Point (Hyperfest, NASA) worth the tow from ATL?
krisko 04-20-2005, 07:15 PM I'm planning my moves here and can make the July Hyperfest weekend at Summit Point. Is it worth the tow from Atlanta? What track is it like that I may have driven in the southeast?
Looking at the site it seems there are 3 circuits...which one typically is used for club racing?

I guess that was what the changes from last year were all about. The next Club Race is going to be on the main track though. Still. It's a long way to tow a car for Summit.
qwickm3 04-20-2005, 10:31 PM I went to Summit point last year with Montana to help him out. I didn't race but did a ride around the track with an instructor. The track is fun but there is no way I would tow from ATL to Summit. That gas would be better spent somewhere else in my opinion. No dis to the Summit point locals but when you have track like Road Atlanta and VIR close by you get spoiled :D
Redshift 04-21-2005, 12:03 AM IMO, no way. I've done several tracks, and Summit was not the least favorite on my list, but it's no VIR. I was disappointed having driven from RDU to get there. I would definitely not even consider doing it from ATL.

I was thinking about going up for the NASA-MA DE in July, but it'd still be a 6 hour drive from Chapel Hill. All the Virginia people talk about Summit, but I suppose it's a lot closer to them. Hmmm...now I don't know what I should do.
B.Watts 04-21-2005, 02:32 AM Go for it. It's a great track.
I'm a firm believer in trying to drive as many tracks as you can. You learn about different corners, different surfaces, etc. The goal when trying to become a better driver is to put as many tools in your toolbox as you can, and you can only learn so much if you keep going to the same tracks time and time again...once you get "comfortable" at a track, the amount that you learn there gets to be less and less per the amount of time you spend there.
Also, there's the art of learning how to learn new tracks and adapt what you have in your toolbox already. If you never visit a new track, you don't develop those skills. When neat opportunities come along (maybe some invites you to race with them in the Homestead 12 hour, etc.), you want to be confident in your ability to learn new tracks in a new car quickly and have as vast of a knowledge base and "toolbox" to draw from as possible.
sfzBimmer2 04-21-2005, 02:55 AM Good point, Bryan. You just inspired me to start a new thread!

These are good points and I always said when I started racing that I'd drive any track at least once. But my other option (Roebling) is only a 4 hour tow away and I feel like I still have a lot to learn on that track. We'll see.

i'm also debating on which one to go to that weekened....i havent driven summit yet and i love roebling...they are both about the same distance for me...hmm...
are you really 4 hours away from roebling? i figured you were a lot closer....

Every bit of 4 hours, but a 4 hour tow for me is nothing. I think Summit is 10 hours so you can probably figure where I'll be.

roebling is 6hrs for me and i think summit is about the same....i might be down there with you and that will probably be my first race, woohoo!
sunir 04-21-2005, 10:56 AM come to Summit Krisko...it's a great track and I'll most likely be there racing in GTS CH at the Hyperfest...c'mon out, you'll like the track...

Yeah, that's why I'm considering Summit because hyperfest is a big deal apparently. If we can decide as a group where all the cool people will be then I'm willing to make a tow.

Unless you run at the ARRC or the RubOffs, Hyper-fest is probably the biggest crowd you will ever race in front of.
There were tons of spectators in the bleachers at last year's Hyper-Fest. It looked like ye olden days when Trans Am ran at SP.
sunir 04-21-2005, 12:24 PM Hyperfest is a big deal indeed...like Joel said lots of folks...and a great turnout...I've never raced at Hyperfest but looking forward to this year...Dado, myself and a few others I know are going there for sure...
