View Full Version : Prepared... just how far to gut the doors?
usm34me 04-20-2005, 03:20 AM Would the progression from stock to gut follow the "spirit" of the BMWCCA CR program (assuming glass removed while on track and nascar-type side bars)?

megatron 04-20-2005, 04:01 AM goodness lou, you've been busy... when you said stripped, you weren't kidding!!!
B.Watts 04-20-2005, 10:47 AM Are you using NASCAR bars on the passenger side?
ceegeezM3 04-20-2005, 10:53 AM I was told by Mike Perkins (SC tech steward) to NOT cut out the structural door bars out.
B.Watts 04-20-2005, 10:56 AM It looks like you have already removed them in the picture?
In a Prepared car, I personally would leave the passenger glass/motor in the car. You'll likely need the weight, and it's nice to be able to roll up the window or trailering and overnight at the track.
mcclaskz 04-20-2005, 01:46 PM For the cage that I copied, I kept the passenger side glass/window/everything, and just covered it w/ aluminum. It doesn't have side intrusion bars on the passenger side. On the driver's I have nascar bars, so I gutted it completely.
snk328is 04-20-2005, 01:52 PM Do you guys have any good ideas for fabbing up your own aluminum door covering? Or is it a task that's better left to the pro's?

mine were pretty easy...just take a sheet of aluminum and cut it to fit the door, cut a hole for the door handle, and rivet the panel to the door....i'm sure you can make it more elaborate/complicated if you want....
megatron 04-20-2005, 02:06 PM lou, if you need some door shells to go back to less gutted for ip, let me know. i have a pair (techno violet) that i gutted to put the stuff into my aluminum doors. you can have em.
rollie 04-20-2005, 02:09 PM I left the pass side window motor and mechanism as Mr. Watts stated and simply got a piece of big HVAC galvanized duct that I had around, (you could use .040 aluminum if you wanted - but there's really no weight savings...Cut it to shape following a pattern I had first made out of cardboard.
I painted it to match the interior (light grey), drilled a number of 2mm pilot holes and screwed it in w/ Stainless screws. DONE!!
Even incorporated the Door handle pull surround and the remote mirror switch. All in an afternoon...
I didn't quite take as much of the drivers door for the Nascar style bars as what's shown in the above pics...but to each his own...
I can send you a pic if you wish...let me have your email.

dmwhite 04-20-2005, 02:31 PM you could use .040 aluminum if you wanted
the rules require "0.060” aluminum or a comparable material"
rollie 04-20-2005, 03:00 PM Sorry - guess that's what I meant - what's 20 thou between friends???
:)

Dave, I would really appreciate pictures! Send them my way at snk328is@comcast.net.
Or maybe you can post 'em here so that future racers who have the same question can find it in a search. ;)

I did my own. Had a sheet metal guy do the break along the top. Pretty easy.

Thanks Jay, I forgot about that thread. Very nice work. :)

I'm thinking door knobs for the door pull mechanism. Whatcha thunk of it? :stickoutt
(totally kidding)
usm34me 04-20-2005, 08:07 PM Gentlemen, thanks for the input. BTW, the last pic of the three that I posted is NOT my car, though I may have given you that impression.
Based on what I'm reading/seeing, looks like I'll be gutting just the the driver's side.

I may be able to help you with those as well. I made a template for mine and have a cool trick to finish them off nicely.
For the next month I'm going to be a bit tied up. Just rented a building this week to finish my car and my business partner's. It's just a bit on the small side, but will make a nice race shop for us.
That said, Jay's are really nice. Perhaps Jay can put you in touch with the guy who made his, assuming he has a template and can just fab them up. That would be ideal.
Hey, I didn't side track this thread. I just followed you. ;)

I'm going to try to get some in time for the BMW race at the end of the month, so I guess my first attempt is going to be a home made door panel.
I was thinking it would be nice to use quick release fasteners for attachment...
Hey, I didn't side track this thread. I just followed you. ;)What are you talking about? I'm on topic here. If you had posted, it would have been something along the lines of "so the weather was really nice down in Houston today..." :stickoutt

Have a few sets made up, I know I'd take some off your hands at T'hill in May. :)

John-
If I have time, I'll get over to the guy who cut mine out and did the break. If not, I'm certainly willing to share the pattern with you.
For any others, the problem would be shipping them. They aren't flat, are fairly thin (bendable) and are large.
