how big a difference is the sport suspension from the regular I suspension... I have heard some stories about hard suspension and i live in NYC and i'm trying to decide between a I sport or just an I... and personally it seems like the I is a better car....

Smoother ride, softer suspension and better gas mileage

what do you guys think?

I just dont want to ruin a very expensive suspension on NYC streets... even the I seemed much stiffer than the IL suspension

It is that much better. There are others on here with Sports in NYC and no problems - just don't go wild with aftermarket wheel combos and you will not have any problems. The OEM Mpars are very strong wheels even for the NYC streets. :alright

Could NOT agree more. Don't make the same $20,000 mistake I made. I should have purchased an "i Sport" the first time around. I had a 740IL with S-EDC for two years before selling it and getting an "i Sport". Stick with the stock wheels and stock tire size.

BTW...I am in Connecticut and drive to NYC, Long Island, and NJ on regular basis. The car is SOLID !

Grab a 99-01 sport, you will not be disappointed. You can pick up a set of basketweaves off of ebay for about 4 bills for winter. Unless you are entertaining clients and need the extra room in the rear there is no reason to buy the IL. my .02

The sport has 89K miles and the dealer wants 19K which is a bit high, not to mention i hate used car dealers...

the 740I is from its original owner and has only 70K miles and the guy wants 20K, which seems more resoanble...

seems like the guys who have the sport love it and think its much better than the I... i dont really like very stiff suspensions, or lower gas milage...is it that much better than an "i"???

My car by no means has "stiff" suspension. On the contrary, it is quite comfortable and still very responsive. I get 19 around town and 25 on the road. Its the wheels that mame the big difference in the ride characteristics.

Its also quite novel to be driving behind a 7er that doesnt have sports suspension cause when it takes corners It looks like a shoe box on wheels :lol

My Father has a 00' IL w/ 16'' wheels. I have an 01' IS w/ m-pars. Having driven both cars there isn't that much of a noticable difference. I think the roads where I am are the worst in North America and I don't complain about my sport.

i am worried about tha expensive suspension...

oh one more thing is there much of a diff in the comfort, are the seats firmer?

I do some long drives like up to NH, and i know the "i" has nice comfey seats, the sport looks a little stiffer...

Thanks again for all the repsonses, i really was leaning towards the "i" because it had lower miles and was only a little more expensive, but now it seems like everyone loves their sport.

Go to the dealer and drive both cars.

DONT limit yourself to these two cars. TAKE YOUR TIME and find a lower mileage sport from a good source. Rushing in to a purchase or limiting yourself like this will only end in buyer remorse.

Please keep us posted on what you end up doing.

Good point SR. I shopped for about a year all over the country to wind up finding one locally. LOL. As far as the suspension goes, it is identical, pricewise, for the sport and non-sport. At around 100k you should plan on replacing EVERY component anyway IMO. Just for reference, I paid 16K for my 99 sport in october '04 with 92K. It was still under CPO at the time and I had a bunch of CPO work performed on it before the warranty ran out in Dec. I have since replaced all suspension components DIY at a cost of around $1600. By doing my due dilligence, i found a solid motor, accident free, electronic bug free car with normal wear and tear issues, mostly suspension related. FYI, i have put 13,000 miles on the car since Oct and have not lost ONE drop of oil. Oil actually still looks good which is amazing. I spent so much time initially looking for a low mileage car. I have come to realize that if you find a good one with a higher mileage, you avoid some of the "inevitable" expenses. With the new suspension, my car should be good to go for about another 100K, or in my case, about 3 years. About a year and a half from now I will start shopping for a 760i and start the whole process all over again. It really is a love affair, just make sure you find the right "mate".

which is why i figure the 89K isnt that big a deal, since any big problems will be covered... is that an ok assumption?

Suspension components are NOT covered under CPO

Yep, sport seats are more firm. But, you slide around much less with aggresive driving. Plus, you get the adjustable support under the legs that doesn't come on the comfort seats. Sport seats have all the other adjustments that comfort seats have, except that active massage thing that is an option on comfort seats.

IMHO, the diff, suspension, steptronic & shadowline trim make the sport the way to go! :buttrock
