Can you get remote sensors for the V1 so that you dont have to mount the main unit visibly?

Not lately, sorry!

here is the remote display option. As for where to put the unit, I have heard of people mounting it in the 3rd brake light housing, then running the remote display wherever they want it.

The remote display is kinda washed out in this pic, but it is right under the gas gadge.

Manufacturers' websites are often great resources for information about their products... but as I know personally, it's a waste as nobody bothers to read them.

Right you are. However, sometimes there are aftermarket devices for products that the original manufacturer does not support. I was simply wondering if there was available, from a source other than V1, remotely mounted front and rear sensors.

Just my $0.02, but I wouldn't feel comfortable mounting the actual unit in the 3rd breaklight housing, because:

1) That gives priority to radar from the rear, which is not the major concern (at least as so far as my driving style). I'm much more likely to encounter radar up ahead in a speed trap than a cop flying up from behind me w/ radar blaring. Usually they'll pace you from behind. In fact, having it in the rear like that could very well obscure it's detection capabilities from the front to an extent.

2) Take Rob's advice. On the V-1 website, it has mounting options (down low, or high up). Again, as per my experience and driving style, I need it very high up. I don't have a V-1 in the Beemer, but in my RX7, I mount it right above the rear view mirror. That area of the windshield is tinted, and it's actually higher than the top portion of the door, so it's virtually undetectable by cops. It's hardwired w/ the kit that came w/ it, and I ran the line under the headliner. So no wires etc going to the cig lighter, etc. That's as stealth as it gets. And believe me, I've been pulled over several times w/ it there, and it's never been noticed. Also, w/ it high up, you're getting warnings from up ahead much sooner than w/ it down low.

The only advantage bmw3er's setup has to mine is, from behind, cars can see the dector lights blinking and what not. If a cop happens to be behind you, he can bust you for using the dector because of the lights. But then again, I have so many gauges and other misc items that blink and emit red light inside my car that he'd be hard pressed to try and prove it was a radar detector (IF he found it). bmw3er's setup is pretty much completely invisible to everyone in the surrounding, but I'm curious if it's removable (ie immediately), because you bet a cop would see it there if he came up to talk to ya.

EDIT: I forgot to mention I live in one of the few states in which detectors are ILLEGAL, so don't mind all that cop noticing it stuff lol since chances are, you don't live in VA too.

Its great to know that we can get 10 mpg @ 145 mph. What a great picture!

FWIW, Dave Clement installed his V1 up in the UGDO area. He did this by splitting the V1 in half (via a ribbon connector from Radio Shack) & his V1 is totally hidden. He has that Stealth1 module that shows the arrows on his mid. Pretty cool, from what I've read. :buttrock

HEy FD, whats the penalty in VA if you get busted with a detector?

HEy FD, whats the penalty in VA if you get busted with a detector?IIRC, it's only a $40 fine, but here's the catch. In VA, they automatically schedule a court appearance for you for pretty much any violation, and thus, whether you go to court or not, you're paying the court fee. How much is the court fee? Get this: $55 (last time I checked). So you end up paying a low fine and a high court fee either way. Ain't that something...

Oh and while the police cannot (permanently) confescate your radar detector, it can be taken for evidence, but returned to you after the court hearing. If they take it and you admit guilt, pay the fine and court fee, they mail it back to ya.

Sidenote: IIRC, every single minor violation in Fairfax County has a fine lesser than the court fee lol. Only "major" violations like speeding, reckless driving, racing, DUI, etc carry fines larger than the court fees. But if you get a load of the fines for say, speeding (something like $5 a mile for every mile over the speed limit), and the associated jailtime and license suspension that usually comes w/ it  , well...court fees won't exactly be your biggest concern.

~Interesting Related Quotes:

"And another thing: if I go to court, there's an option that I could get the ticket erased, if the cop doesn't show, or that I could get the fines reduced, but there's ALSO a chance that my fines could be up to doubled, and I could have to pay MORE court fees. Since when did the traffic court become f---ing Las Vegas?"

"One of my suitemates at JMU got pulled over once in Fairfax County for going 15 miles over the speed limit, and they made her go to jail for the night. While I think you would look super hot in an orange jumpsuit, be glad you didn't spend the weekend telling some snaggly-toothed hooker to stop yelling about her tuna fish sandwich and asking if she could have your leftovers."
