Hey all! I was just looking at the Recaro Seat thread on this forum and it reminded me of something I was thinking about doing to my car. I have some Scheel seats installed and they came with a custom mounting deal. I was curious, albeit unfortunate since my interior has been reupholstered, if it is possible to remove the rails welded to the chassis and make a lower mount for the seat? The reason that I ask is that I am 6'4" and I have seen this done on racecars, but haven't really taken a close enough look. Another thing I plan on doing is to machine a piece of round aluminum to extend the length of the steering shaft so that the steering wheel will be closer to my reach since my arms aren't particularly long in comparison with my legs! Thanks in advance for any input!!

I have a sparco going into mine and im going to be bolting a plate to the origional mounts on the car with the sparco seat on top... I'll show you at bimmerfest... it'll be easier to explain... Im sure we'll meet as your coming with Matt, right? I'll explain it more clearly too you there... (btw, im like 6'2-6'3, so we're basically in the same boat)

Cheers,
Jonas

Very cool, I am actually going with my pops in one of his customer's "special" M5s. lol! I will definitely have a look at your setup, I really want to make my car easier to drive.

Ok, this might be a stupid question.. but how do you remove the front seats out of the car???

There are bolts that hold them on underneath the seat. The seats on a 2002 are actually quite easy to remove.

much smaller. they are 10mm bolts. very weak. and so is the actual mount that is welded to the body.

This is great information. So is it easy to change the height of this mount?

No, you rally cennot change the hight by leavinig it stock. If you install and aftermarket seat like sparko or Recaro, they might have sliders and side mounts that will allow hight adjustments, but that will only move the seat up, not down. I had to remove my welded mounts and bolted Corbeou side mounts to the floor. I did have to cut part of the shoulder boulster on the seat because it as interfering with the door.

Okay, well I was planning on doing something like cutting those mounts since I have some Scheel seats that I put in and they came with the adapters to fit into the stock mounting point. Is it possible to lower the stock mount by cutting it and welding it lower, or should I make a new mounting spot with some fabrication?

you'll have to make new mounting points. BTW, the lower you set up the mount the closer it will be to the door. so watch out for that.

Thanks, I am probably going to put the seat in the car when there is nothing there and see how low I can go without seat side contact with anything in the car.
