View Full Version : Where's a good shop for a helmet?

I signed up for the CCA highway safety school/DE in May, and will likely do some autocrosses this summer. Where's a good place to get a helmet? From the little I know I understand it's important to get one that fits properly, so I'd rather buy one that I've tried on than order one from the internet. Should I get open or full face? How much should I expect to spend for a good helmet?

OG Racing.

Expect to pay anywhere from $250 and up.
I'd recommend a full face. Get an SA2000. The SA2005 are not out yet.
They also rent helmets I believe.

Go see Brian Hair at OG racing.

Also, is there anything I should know about helmets before buying one? Certain features to look for? Are there certain brands I should look at? Do some helmets cost more just because of the name, or is it a you get what you pay for type of thing? If I get a motorcylce in the future will I be able to use the same helmet for that?

If you wear glasses/sunglasses, bring them with you to make sure they will fit in the helmet.

The helmet should feel tight but not uncomfortable. As the padding wears in, it will fit a little better. Try on as many as you can. Different brands will fit completely different. Remember that you will be spending a decent amount of time in it.

Also try the helmet in your car.
There may become a point where only SA helmets are allowed.

All good advice. Get the cheapest full face one that fits right.

OG is definitely the way to go.

The "test" to see if a helmet fits is to put it on, strap it in, then try to take it off from behind (lift up from bottom of back). If it comes off, then its too big :)

I agree with others. Go check them out at OG and pick one you like. Some will say to get a cheap helmet from Racer's Wholesale, etc... which you can do, but its your head youre protecting :)

I dunno if you wear glasses, but the reason I got the Bell M2Pro was because it has a larger eyeport. Makes it a lot easier to put my glasses on.

More expensive models are also lighter...

Also pick up a neck brace. Be sure it is a good one. I don't think OG sells crap anyway. If you should also be buying gloves, get a color that contrasts your car. It makes it easier to see your hands when you give point bys at the track. Don't get gloves to match you car. :nono

Hampton, like everyone said, drive over to OG Racing in Sterling to check them out. Try different ones on, etc. Definitly get WHITE... you're going to be sitting in a car with it on and it will get hot, hotter if it's black.

They will probably recommend the Bell M2. I think it's $299 and pretty much the standard intro helmet. Try as many on as you want, and definitly sit in the car. My biggest problem is not having enough room between my helmet and roof and have to compromise seating position.

And don't buy red or orange gloves. They don't like that at the track. Only flags should be red or orange.

Also, OG Racing closes at 2:00 on Saturdays so get out there early.

huh? that's a new one. all the workers i have talked with like red or orange gloves because they can see the driver's hands easier. i have always used orange. workers shouldn't wear those colors, but drivers should.

Ah, I thought it was for driver's as well. I'll defer to the RACECAR driver on this one. Not wearing or even saying 'red' while working is drilled into the workers' heads so I thought it applied to drivers too.
