Dear friends of Stella,

I updated the web site today with all new content for the first of the year. The site has a new facelift too. Working on more improvements, including full text search... More as I have time!

The site is here: My2002tii.com (http://www.my2002tii.com)

SHAMELESS PLUG: I have another pet project for these license plate frames for 2002s. I have a great source in the custome frame business who makes them, and am looking for ideas on what else we need as 02 owners.

I know there is no thing as 19XX BMW 2002 license plate frames for your car - hell every other classic car has them - why not us!!

Contact me PM or email off line if you're interested in one for your ride (or whip?) - $15+ postage. These things are first rate, as you can tell.

Remember... Attitude is everything!

Bravo from me also Keith. Frankly, I can't imagine subjecting the completed masterpiece to road hazards.

Your pictures of the exhaust manifold got me thinking about the manifold I have on the shelf.

Did all tii exhaust manifiolds have "webbing" betweent the ports?
A manifold I picked up on ebay for $25 (hoping it was tii) doesn't have webbing. But it doesn't have any emissions ports, or even the undrilled boss near the downpipe connection I have seen in your comparison picture (standard vs. tii manifold).
I'm now thinking my manifold at the link below is just an early non-emissions manifold.

What do you think. Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Thanks for the kind words... If I don't drive it - it's not a real car. I'm sure I will baby it for a long time and keep it nice, but it would be a shame to make it a garage queen. Think of it as a new car!!

We started this thread a few days ago when somebody else asked the question:

Thread here on TII manifolds (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337610)

I have seen some TII manifolds without webbing, sort of cut out if you will like yours appears.

The simplest way is this - you have a part number I can see but can't read on the thing... What is it, I'll look it up for you.

Keith, thanks for the manifold look up offer. The number cast into the manifold is 121 142 01 80 1. I guess even if it's not a tii manifold, it's better than my '76's emissions manifold.

I myself am in the same dilemma with what i think is a Tii manifold.

I have 121 142 01 80 1

Have not installed yet, due to time, and worried about degree of difficulty with rusty studs.

Also, not to take away from your post, but i speak for myself, and many others......your site is simply superb, and offers great pictures, tutorials, and advice.

for that...THANKS.

Some day I will get to meet you all and let you see the beast in person. You know you can't die until you have driven a new 2002tii, it's part of having the bug.

So far the doors shut unbelievably nice. Spend $20 and get new door blocks for the doors and the corn kernal tips for the ends of the door latch mechanism!

Its funny how a car can affect us so much-- just got back from a post midnight run in my tii having just recently got the steering box sorted out -- what a freaking joy to drive. Even though my old bitch is flecking paint and so on, her running gear are primo and it just loves to be driven. No doubt about it -- we might be freaks about these cars, but they do give back just as much as you put in -- and more

cheers Keith -- you inspire us

Keith, were you able to look up the exhaust manifold number (121 142 01 80 1) that "noproblemq" and I both have?

BTW, just the other day a guy said from looking at my picture that it is an early tii manifold without webbing between the ports. Beats me.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike/all...

The TII part number for exhaust manifolds begins with 11, so does regular 2002s. In 12, you start into engine electrical in part numbers main group. 11 is the main group for the engine by BMW's dewey decimal system.

11 62 1 265 449 is current tii part #
11 62 0 743 100 is the old part number that was superceded by 449.

11 62 1 265 451 is the Euro manifold part number mentioned earlier.
11 62 0 643 102 is the old part number that was superceded by 451.

A part # that begins in 12 as an exhaust manifold is not currently listed in BMW parts.

I cannot find reference to part number 12 11 4 201 801 in Mobile Tradition. This goes back to the original microfiche on the cars from day one before CD versions existed. That doesn't mean it isn't real, it's not documented anywhere that I can find. I will get you a definitive answer next week as I am spending two days with Bob Murphy of the TII register in Houston.

Thanks Keith.

Maybe it's just a casting number or something other than a BMW part number.

Keith,

I have been watching your project for some time now. Car looks great and the work you are doing really compliments the 02 series. Congrats!

I recently woke my 74 tii up after a long winter hibernation. So this post will have me driving the crap out of her in the next few days.

Cheers,

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the nice comments... I thought you sold your car?

Today I met with the upholstery folks today to go over what we're going to do with the inside of the car. Will start sewing things up in a few weeks... will have the details on the rebuild of the inside in new tan leather.

Carpet, now there's my next big worry. Al knows what I mean!

I was just talking to Juan Cordova last week about selling my car. He too thought I sold it. You know his was sold a while back, that 74tii was concourse too. It was for sale for about 3 months, I had a lot of people interested. But my wife (God bless her) told me "Is it really worth it?", the car has so many memories for she and I. Long story short, I decided to never sell it. I would spend years trying to find another one to replace it with anyway.

So, I am still in the club man. Purist at heart. Tan leather though , your car is going to one of the nicest in the country. The tan will really set it off with the red paint you chose. Are you going with custom carpeting or the one piece 74-76 carpet? I replaced my carpet and went with the multi piece, it was easier to install. Anyway, will you be around at any of the West Coast meets? We have the Bay Area 02 Swap and Show next month. It'd be nice to meet you and talk about your project.

The goal for me with the car is to drive all 10 of the Top Ten Car and Driver roads in the USA after it's done.... so that hiway 1 drive is definately planned, up and down at least once!

it is truly amazing how much of a difference those plastic "kernals" make. my door never seemed to shut right, i found a "donor" car, and voila! one would never suspect that those little things would do anything at all. got rid of a huge headache...

have you thought about coming to the monterey historics in august? the corral would be a great showcase for stella; as well as, well it's the historics.

When you say rubber kernals, do you mean the little rubber things that slip over the end of the latch on the door?

Thanks for the pics. Do they slowly wear down, and stop doing their job? Edit: Mine are there, but one of my doors doesnt close as easlily. (could be anything) I need to swap the "kernals" from door to door, and see if I feel a difference.

They're still available from the dealer and (if I recall correctly) dirt cheap.

Regarding my "mystery" manifold, we were comparing it at a DFW '02 gathering today. It looked to one owner that it might be a 1600 manifold due to the shape of the ports.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/mmiller2002/exhaust/DSC01650.jpg

We did not have a tii manifold to look at side-by-side. Anyone know if the ports in the pic look like the correct shape for a tii manifold?

From the top, it looked like other installed tii manifiolds. From the side, it does not get fatter toward the rear like the ones in Keith's comparison picture.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike - I think we have safely determined that casting numbers do not necessarily indicate BMW Part #s !!!!

http://www.my2002tii.com/images/oct2001/DSCF0048.jpg

Here is my TII manifold sans the heat shield - hope that helps. I'll try and take another shot next chance I get.

Thanks again. I've read a lot of the "is it a tii manifold posts" and I was surprised that it's not commonly stated that the cast numbers are not a BMW P/N.

Anyway, I'm now wanting to see if I can get port dimensions for the 4 at the head and the 2 at the downtube connection so that I can maybe tell if its a 1600 or 2002 manifold. Since I want to have it ready to go on, I'd hate to have it not fit. But I'd also hate to buy another manifold now if I didn't need to.

Plus, if it's a 1600, I'd like to confirm it and then sell it accurately.

I also came across this on http://www.ultimategarage.com/tech-old.html

Maybe I have an early tii manifold, no webbing.

"2002tii Exhaust Manifolds

The 2002tii exhaust manifold has no smog fittings or port injectors like many of the other 4-cyl manifolds. It is my choice for performance engines up to 150hp (cars with dual sidedrafts and cams of 304 degree or more should use headers). It flows like a header and cast iron construction ensures many years without a problem. BE CAREFUL with the early tii manifolds (the ones without the webbing between the exhaust plenums)....these have a nasty tendency to crack at the #3 cylinder. New tii manifolds are available for $235.00 including new manifold to head gasket (318i type with integral heat shield), flange downpipe gasket and new copper plated locknuts."
