View Full Version : Kept up with a Dakota R/T 5.9 *highway*
toopercentmlk 04-07-2005, 02:36 AM ok, so im not big on street racing. i use my car mostly for my own personal thrills, but coming northbound on the 57 tonight i come accross a slightly modded Dakota R/T 5.9 liter v8.. its awesome, i wanted one of those trucks. I pull up next to him, and try not to feel like a tool when i give him a nice big rev. Im cruising next to him at about 75mph, he takes a while.. about 5 seconds, maybe talking to his passenger(just came out of the carpool) if he even wants to bother with me :confused . all of a sudden he downshifts and goes, im late and caught off gaurd so im instantly one cl behind so i switch into the drafting position. I know my car has punch but ireally needed the slip stream to stay on his ass.. and thats just what i did, all the way to about 110, i could hear his v8 roaring, even louder than my engine right infront of me, but he did not pull, i was about to do a slingshot, nascar style pass but he swearved right to avoid a truck and im assuming he let off since i passed a little too easily to the right. it was fun keeping up with such a roaring beast.
my power mods are ECIS short ram with custom ram air/scoop(see sig link), custom catback exhaust with DTM tips. and slipstream skillz :redspot
M Roady 04-07-2005, 03:03 AM Must have been the DTM tips. :stickoutt Nice run. Not sure about the truck. Found a few 5.8s, with 250 hp 345 ish torque, Dakotas. The 2 wd aren't that heavy so they may be good competition with 328s.
agmobb 04-07-2005, 10:18 AM I used to want a Dakota RT before as well. Nice looking trucks. Throw a supercharger on there and you got a lightning killer. I would think you would have pulled him at higher speeds. He probably tops out a lot sooner than you.
Blaise 04-07-2005, 10:21 AM Nice, just be glad you didnt catch one of the more modded ones, my friends truck ran 13.7@99 with boltons!
They are a lot slower on the topend though lol brick aerodynamics
dohermst 04-07-2005, 10:23 AM Having a Dodge Ram 4x4 I get to visit the dodge forums and I have to bring up that the mod happy dakota owners will put in a 408 stroker motor, and add a blower or some juice to it. Most of them are shooting for the 12's or better on the 1/4. their biggest problem is the lack of enough weight in the back for off the line traction... but their still quick
toopercentmlk 04-07-2005, 03:39 PM yea, theyre quick trucks. i knew i would give him a run for his money at higher speeds but we didnt really get there. He had exhaust for sure, and it sounded awesome but thats most likely his only go-fast mod.

Nice run, my friend has one and he says it is limited to 110. Needless to say, I told him to get s/w.
PointMEby 04-07-2005, 03:44 PM nice run man, but i remember seeing dakatoa R/T 4 doors run high 7's and high 15's. They claimed the standerd V8(4.7 liter) was quicker to 60 because of so much less weight and a minimal difference in hp. However the 2 doors are much quicker and those 5.9's can sure as hell be modded.
Spin2Win 04-07-2005, 10:09 PM I've got an '02 Durango R/T with the 5.9l engine. Your buddy probably glanced down at his gas gauge, and decided to back off.
I've got a '98 328is with some mild suspension mods (Euro M3 setup), and it is sooo much more fun to drive than the truck.
...but that truck does sound goood.
volta06 04-07-2005, 10:38 PM Man, I wish my dakota had balls . . . . v-6 175 blah power.

i learned manual shifting on a 4cylinder dakota.. blah is an overstatment
anyways, i really wanted my run to go for longer, i was setting up my drafting move then we had to use evasive maneuvers when traffic came up

Well, considering aerodynamics and the effects on handling: Should 110+ really be a desireable goal outside of a drag strip?
