View Full Version : I need some opinions... (Airdams)
WTA123 04-05-2005, 09:55 AM I need to buy a front airdam for my car to finish it off now that the big front bumper is off. Problem is I really cant decide which airdam style will look good a on a car that does not have flares. Alot of the pics I have looked at are of cars that have both flares and an airdam. The flares seem to flow perfectly with the airdam. I do not have flares and I cannot decide. I am kinda of leaning toward the turbo style, but thats mainly because it will cover up the two big holes from the bumper. Any suggestions or opinions would be great.
Thanks
HarryPR 04-05-2005, 10:34 AM I like the Kamei air dam for non-flared cars. I have one for my car which I will eventually install (been saying so for about 3 yrs now)...
WTA123 04-05-2005, 10:44 AM Is the one from Ireland engineering a Kamei style? I get confused :help
Ireland Engineering (http://www.bmw2002.com)
HarryPR 04-05-2005, 11:10 AM With apologies to the owner, Mark from NY (pic from the 2002FAQ gallery)
The Kamei air dam has a bumper-like look to it:

The zender one is installed lower and does not reach the bumper area(car owned by Kevin from seattle):

2002maniac 04-05-2005, 05:10 PM I think square-light cars look best with no front bumper or airdam. When I did mine, I filled the two holes before getting it painted. (I also deleted the rear bumper, but changed my mind later on)
WTA123 04-05-2005, 06:10 PM I like the look of that 75 1502 in that movie thats floating somewhere on here. The one thats turboed and has 488 hp. Its light blue, and it has that Kamei style airdam. It looks real clean and simple. It has minor flares, i think, but they are not huge ones, so it might still work on my car. It has no rear bumper as well, its just smoothed over and painted. I was thing of buying a fiberglass rear bumper from DapBMW, for those who know who he is.
noproblemq 04-05-2005, 08:12 PM I as well want to do an airdam...and was unaware of a differecne between the flares, and no-flares. Mine will have no front bumper, nor flares...i was hoping to do the air-dam in the attached link. I like that look.

I think this is what Ireland sells, or other vendors i have seen on e-bay for $100 bucks or so, either with no brake ducts or with.
What is the vote on fiberglass vs. molded plastic??
WTA123 04-05-2005, 09:11 PM I like his car as well. What style is that? I think ABS plastic is prefered, not positive myself though.
HarryPR 04-05-2005, 10:17 PM ABS dams are stronger than fiberglass, but when they do break, they are harder to repair.
I've also heard that ABS is harder to paint than fiberglass. Paint does not adhere to it as good as on fiberglass.
HTH,
74tii 04-06-2005, 04:30 PM Just saw this zender on flebay

Hope you don't mind me using your pic!
GoodOlSappy 04-07-2005, 01:12 AM hey Lip,
Do you think that i could fit some fogs (maybe e36 fogs) in where i guess its opened up for the brake duct?
LIP277 04-07-2005, 01:37 AM Hope you don't mind me using your pic!
No problem. I did get annoyed at the fella a while back using that same pic in an e-bay auction for an air dam (and not even the correct one for what I have.... ) :mad
But here (and especially for constructive purposes) - Go for it!
hey Lip,

Physically - I'd say you could rig something up....
Pragmatically - I'd think fog lights would need to be up higher. I have driving lights (Cibie I95's) installed on brackets welded to the bumper supports. The air dam is nothing more than some plastic molded into the shape you want. The Zender isn't fiberglass (at least it wasn't ~20 years back when I got mine). The position of the holes is right at the same level as the bottom of the front fascia. There's really nothing to mount to unless you make some real elaborate funky support to hold everything (I think the air dam would vibrate and move around a bunch causing the lights to be jittery - But I have no data to show that... just an opinion.)
GoodOlSappy 04-07-2005, 11:25 AM cool thanks a lot
WTA123 04-10-2005, 12:29 PM Im getting used to the no bumper look!

GoodOlSappy 04-10-2005, 01:27 PM what are you gonna do with the back.
WTA123 04-10-2005, 02:22 PM Most likely a fiberglass rear bumper. Definately some sort of bumper
fjord7302 04-10-2005, 11:31 PM I think it would be cool with the 'glass rear bumper and Kamei style front spoiler. When my cousin and I did his '74 with the Kamei f/s we made a filler panel to cover the big holes of the late bumper. Turned out clean.

WTA123 04-18-2005, 08:13 PM What is the most common way to attach an airdam? Just rivets? Also, does anyone know how much it would cost to get one painted at a shop?
Ohtwo 04-18-2005, 08:34 PM WTA, is this your daily driver?
fjord7302 04-19-2005, 01:21 AM I've been driving my '02 daily. I don't mind, the weather has been really nice here in Northern CA and cruising with the sunroof open is a little piece of heaven. Kinda fun exercising the Yokohamas and Ground Controls.

WTA123 04-20-2005, 09:05 AM WTA, is this your daily driver?
