I'm considering painting my 92 325 (no clearcoat) Hennarot. Did Henna Red originally have a clear coat? I can paint the my car myself if the color doesn't have a clear coat. I'd need a different gun and what not to paint a clear coat color.

Some pre-91 cars didn't have clearcoats. Actually for other brands like Honda, their awesome red was done with a ORANGE base coat, and then a transparent PURPLE tinted clearcoat.

I think you can't go wrong with a clearcoat on top of your regular paint since it only adds protection and gloss and won't mess with your color. If you can opt for a clearcoat (or extra layer of clearcoat) during repaint, I think you should do it.

Clearcoat is a PITA to do. You really need a booth to paint with clear.

Some 95's didn't have clear coats either. ;)

I see, you are going to paint this yourself in a garage or some other potentially dusty environment.

You know.... Hennarot doesn't need a clearcoat anyways. Just make sure you do a good job with the paint and ensure everything is smooth. Go over several times with ultra fine grit sandpaper if needed.

Also, you don't need a paint booth with clear. Make sure your color coat is good. Then wet down your garage floor and allow some time for the moisture to permeate the air. This keeps dust levels really low. Then spray away.

Otherwise, use the gloss version of your color and paint in one coat.

To answer the question, No clear coat. Single stage paint.
