I really want to upgrade my stock cam to match the new 40 dcoes, along with the new headers. I was talking to a guy who said that a 292 cam is too much for the street and that his car ran like crap when he did it? Is that true? I know alot of you have that, and was just wondering. I would definately choose the 292 cam when I did upgrade. Any suggestions? Which brings me to my next point. Would I be able to change camshafts at my house? How involved would it be and how would I go about doing it? Any help would be great.

There are tons of people who have a 292 in their 02 and I haven' heard any of them say it's too much for the street. His car would only run like crap if it wasn't tuned properly. Have you changed the compression ratio or is it stock? Not that it matters, but 9.5 will be a little better than the stock compression if the 292 is used.
You probably wouldn't be able to change the camshaft in your garage but it is possible. You would need to buy several extra tools to be able to do the job, such as a cam removal tool. I'd ask this on the FAQ because there are several people who have the cam removal tool and they might be able to help you with it.

If you have reasonable mechanical abilities you can change the cam at home. I have done it a number of times without difficulty or any special (expensive) tools.
I am currently running a Shrick 284 degree cam in my turbo and was thinking about possibly selling it and replacing it with a factory cam. My car idles okay, but I think it would seem more refined with less lopiness at idle. Before I make my final decision I plan to visit a tuner that specializes in BMW's running with Haltech engine management. Since I created the entire engine map from scratch and only tuned for power on the chassis dyno, I may not have all the coolant, air temperature correction and idle air control factors optimized. If an experienced shop tells me everything is spot on and as good as it gets with the 284 cam, then I may decide to change it.
If you are interested please let me know, the cam has less than 5000 miles of use.

I thought the head had to be machined for the larger cam journals, like the BMW M10 Motorsport cams?

Not true at all, the guy's a puss. I let people talk me out of a 292 for my 9.5:1 build with 38/38. I went with the 284 instead. I have driven a car with a 304 and 45's and I think it would be fine as a daily driver. Go with the 292 or a factory 300. You will like it!

Its fun. Power comes on at 3k, and really comes alive at 3500. The car hops(feels like it from drivers seat) at idle from the cam and im guessing the carbs too.

I ran a Schrick 304 with 45 DCOEs on the street for years and it was fine. The 316 however was pushing it. It was fun for a while but it was a little too much. The car didn't idle well below 1500-2000 RPM and was like sort of like an on/off switch. When you got in the load pedal it was a blast and pulled like a freight train, but stop and go traffic or steday cruising was kind of a pain.

Is a 304 considered to be a motorsports cam? Ill go with a 292 but Im going to have to hold off on it because I don't have the money to pay for someone to install it. Would the dual carbs with new headers yeild results? I was going to do dcoes(done/ Car's not overheating anymore :cool )-> cam( dont have enough money to install)-> headers. Will their be any noticeable improvments without a cam?
