View Full Version : 328is vs new Scion
328isguy81 04-03-2005, 05:22 PM So here I am rolling back home on the highway feeling great because I just got my M3 mirrors and mouldings installed. I had just gotten my studs off as well so the 18 inch wheels were back on and shining. So I have my cruise set for just under 80 when one of those sporty looking Scion's comes right up on my ass. He probably thought since it wasn't an M3 he had a chance. Well of course he switches lanes and gets even with me. He starts to take off so I think why not, so I play catch up. I drop it into 3rd and start slowly approaching his rear bumper, shift to 4th and realize i'm over 100mph and this guy was still hanging with me  I didn't end up finally passing him until like 115-120 or so. What the heck? Are these new Scions that quick or what? I was pretty dissapointed, I think I need that M50 manifold badly. Oh, by the way, i have intake and exaust.
RRdawho? 04-03-2005, 05:29 PM Wow, didn't know scion were fast. Is this that boxy refridgerator scion thing?
awahl63 04-03-2005, 05:55 PM he's talking about the new scion tc which is a very nice car...it ain't no bimmer but it is very respectable for the money
328isguy81 04-03-2005, 05:56 PM Yeah, thats the one.
drmcdave 04-03-2005, 05:56 PM probably the scion tc, its a 2 door coupe, 160 hp. I am impressed if they are that fast though. that boxy one has like 120 hp or something really low.
lilmoose21 04-03-2005, 05:56 PM it was prolly the tc, it has liek 170 somethin hp
LWRNCE 04-03-2005, 06:00 PM are you modded? if you were he shouldnt have hung in there with you for that long...

Yup it's a 2.4 liter Toyota motor making 160hp @ 5,700, the tC only weighs 2900 lbs though. A stock 328 should be making 190hp and weigh in at 3120 lbs.
328isguy81 04-03-2005, 07:51 PM are you modded? if you were he shouldnt have hung in there with you for that long...
ecis intake with a UUC system U is all I have

those boxy piles are only around 105hp. my former friend has one and it is the slowest car i have ever been in. even slower than a carburated 1986 B11 Nissan Sentra, badged "Street Tank"
mitchelrl 04-03-2005, 10:40 PM M50 Manifold will make a HUGE difference.
Stock 328is should run the 0-60 in 6.44 sec, and the 1/4 in 15.0 sec @ 95.7 mph. The tC does 0-60 in 7.4 sec, and the 1/4 in 15.6 @ 88 mph.
Maybe it had a TRD supercharger. I heard the supercharger boosts the car up to around 230-240 hp at the fly. My roomate has one and his car is REALLY slow. It's a good looking car but it is slow. I could walk his car starting off in 2nd gear.
3rdone 04-03-2005, 11:58 PM It had a supercharger no doubt. There are plenty of them in Houston and they aren't worth the gas. By the way, a 328is should be in the 14's if you can drive. And I think car and driver had the Scion at 16's in the 1/4.
Volfinator 04-04-2005, 10:44 PM Scion's can suck my turd factory. I DESPISE them. Can't stand them at all. I'm even more disgusted that people are starting to put superchargers on them like they could be fast. Get real! GOSH! Idiots!

I totally agree with you. But I forget what it was, it was either a website or a magazine that were doing Scion tC project cars, and FI'ing them and actually getting them above 300hp (not sure if it was crank or wheel) but I dunno, I still say it is a waste of money and they are complete garbage. The tC looks aight at best. It has a decent look but still seems too short. It's hood isn't long enough. But it seems like it is a Hyundai Tiburon wanna be. :confused
LeMansGTS 04-05-2005, 12:42 AM i just dont see why anyone in their right mind would say "i am going to buy a new civic, scion, or what have you, so that I could modify the hell out of it. Then I will spend 20k and have the fastest car in my neighborhood." Well buddy you still drive a honda, and with all that you invested you could have bought a G35 or a 3 seies bmw and did a few mods. Atleast when you go out in a bimmer you have some class
investing 20k in a new 20k civic = moronic :confused why would someone do that?
I actually know a guy who invested, some people say about 40k in his MR2 in houston, WTF?He could get an M5 or a highly modded M3 for that. Are quarter mile times that important? No matter what he is driving a Toyota, and if I had the option of a 50k M3 with a 10k AA SC and a few cosmetic mods like the CSL trunklid, rims, and diffuser, I would take an M3 any day. It would equal speed and class.
I see I could have phrased this a bit better so let me make clear exactly what gets to me. When a person who is an 'enthusiast' invests in their civic, scion, bmw, etc., to make the car a better performance car, then I am all for that, and I do have tons of respect for them. However, when they decide to go completly overboard, converting an MR2 into a porsche lookalike (why make a car look like another, when you can just buy it?), with 4 flatscreens, a ps2, and 10 subs, I think that is far from being an enthusiast. Go to Europe and you will see what I mean (none of that crap in true enthusiast cars). There should be no room for flatscreen tvs in trunks or seats of real performance cars, and i think that is moronic, dangerous, and far from cool. So please understand the distinction: I am all for people who mod whatever they have for performance, but I can't stand it when people put screens in their cars and are referred to as enthusiasts. If they want rolling living rooms, that is pretty dumb. Especially because those mods are the most expensive ones. Performance=Great Overdone Aesthetics=trash, kind of like fast and furious when the guy was playing GT1 in his car :rolleyes
just my 2 cents

(/sarcasm) Well not everyone has the common sense like you to invest a lot of money into an m3. I mean come on bro, different strokes for different folks. Car enthusiasts are car enthusiasts no matter what they drive. People drop 40k plus into an m3, and if you add that all up they could have gotten an M5, but that's not what they wanted and that doesn't make them a "moron". You really should try and be a bit more open minded, I have a lot of respect for any guy/girl that loves cars and is willing to get their knuckles a little bloody in order to get a bit more power/style out of their car whether it's a honda, toyota, or bmw. I'm talking about CAR ENTHUSIASTS, if you are one then you'll understand.

If it's 160-170hp it should hang a little with the 328 at 193 hp.

I used to never understand why somebody would buy a cheaper car and then spend a ton of money to make it fast as a car they could've paid less for in the beginning. But the reason they do that, is they slowly built the car up due to a budget, and didn't have a budget big enough to buy that higher up car.
That being said, I like screens. Sometimes, I don't like the flip out screens, I think those are ghetto. In an odd sense, I don't like when it is right down the middle and crap, I say if you're going to have a screen, do custom work and have it mounted somewhere in your car. Maybe because my buddy owns a custom audio shop I am into that stuff now, but I have high standards when it comes to that stuff. But when people put the livingroom in the trunk, I think that is just retarted, I mean you gotta stop the car to play your playstation, the whole point in getting car screens and in car mounts for the PS2's and what not were so you can brag about being able to play the game while driving (please not both at same time, but maybe your passengers can while riding). and I am all about having 10 subs if it can fit. One of the employees at my buddy's shop has a Chevy Tahoe with 12 12"s subs in it, he has like 16 8"s, 2 10"s, and 12 bullet tweeters, needless to say it is pretty loud. The owner of the shop is redoing his whole GMC Jimmy, and he is putting 6 18" subs, he has a 13.7" tv installed in his dash/console and it is bad ass. But they are all done with nice custom work you see in magazines. Well the GMC Jimmy was in multiple magazines. But if you are going to do that stuff, make it look clean. But people that do that are still car enthusiasts in a sense, they just aren't race car enthusiasts, they are car audio enthusiasts.
On a side note, the guy in F&F playing GT1 in his car before the race was the coolest guy in the movie.
agmobb 04-05-2005, 09:48 AM If I had to buy a scion it would definately be the tc. Not a bad car at all imo. Cheap, reliable and with a taste of Lexus quality.
Why get upset at how people spend their money? Just be glad you dont do the same ( huge wing etc.). Yes its lame when people try to turn a civic into a porsche or whatever but what do you say to the thread starter then huh? All the people trying to make their 3 series look like an m3. Is there something wrong with that?
Justbimmering 04-06-2005, 10:32 AM The tc is a nice car for the money. It also has nice features too. From the scion forum it runs high 15's so obviously he had no chance to win the race. Nice kill.
EURO M3 CSL 04-06-2005, 02:19 PM yea.. i dont kno y every1 always disses all other cars cept bmws. maybe not every1 has enough money for afford a bmw? or maybe they just dont like RWD? but either way.. its their choice.. so y try and say their car is a piece? i mean how would u like it if i drove a 05 m3 and u drove a civic.. would u like it if i diss the crap out of u just cuz u drove a civic? each person has different personalities. maybe people might say theyd choose a civic ova a bmw for gas mileage. either way its nothin to be dissing other people on. if people want to make their "cheaper" cars fast.. then go ahead.. thats their passion. just cause they dont drive a bmw doesnt give u the rite to be dissin on their cars. :nono
comptechgsr 04-06-2005, 02:47 PM maybe you should get an m3 motor along with those m3 mirrors and m3 moldings.
that should make you be the Scion killa!
IS 300_M 04-06-2005, 02:58 PM maybe you should get an m3 motor along with those m3 mirrors and m3 moldings.

why not just get the whole package?............and get an M3 ;)
flyimages 04-06-2005, 03:04 PM yea, you can't go wrong with the scion for the features you get, decent hp & for the $$... so why put it down..?
Steiner 04-06-2005, 09:42 PM I've yet to see a dude driving on of those Scion TC's. Every one I've seen on the roads has been piloted by a young Asian female. Those cars do have decent lines though. That super huge sunroof is cool.
Embarrassingly enough, fledgling Scion outsold Mitsubishi in the USDM last year. Ouch.
M Roady 04-06-2005, 09:54 PM Weak.
GreekDriver 04-06-2005, 09:57 PM Why buy a Scion tC when a 1987 BMW 325is is faster, cheaper, and alot nicer? ;)
My friend is buying a Scion tC. He needs a car to get around, and would like one that has some aftermarket options the tC seems like a good choice, especially since he wants a new car, not a used one.
M Roady 04-06-2005, 10:06 PM I just saw an ad for this thing! Has some dork putting fins on the side for "improved areodynamics" and another tool boasting about his samurai graphics! :rofl
Oh so intimidating!
krazydru784 04-07-2005, 04:43 AM yea yea everyone disses on the scions, but in reality they are relatively cheap. great deals for the $$ and reliable since they are basically toyotas. A lot of kids get them because their parents want to get them a new car and dont have that much cash. i think its a great deal. my friend got one a couple weeks ago and performance wise i would have to say its only mediocre. ive had an integra gsr and a 88 rx7 turbo, and the scion doesnt come close to either. the gsr even felt a little snappier. but in terms of build quality i give it a great rating. it seems solid..which also makes it heavy on the turns..and the shifter is a piece of shit...but its got a lot of room in the rear seats..and the dash is not too shabby. but if this is a battle for a under 20k $ sports coupe..get a new civic si.. my roomate has one and i definitely think that one OWNZ the scion

No it's not. A 1997 325 maybe. Anyways, new Scion=warranty, 1987 BMW=money pit in repairs.
giterdone 04-07-2005, 08:33 AM I bash on the scion becuase they are a piece of poop IN MY OPINION. I could car less what you drive. if I think it sucks I will say it is a piece of crap. If I drove a civic and you drove an M3, I would probably beat you to saying that it was a piece of crap. When I drove my prelude i was the first to rag on it. But it doens't really matter, becuase obviously those people like the car, or at least act like they do. I don't hate on every car other than a BMW, I give respect where respect is due, and respect is not due in the scions direction. It probably never will be. I class it down there with hyundai and tiburon.
IS 300_M 04-07-2005, 10:30 AM ....just saw the turbo kit for the scion tc and it's not bad at all. with 300 hp running @ 9 psi and weigh a lot less than most cars, this is an M3 killa :evil2 an e46 i might add :D

It's made by Toyota with aftermarket potential in mind, so there's gonna be lots of aftermarket show and go parts in the process of development!
Oh, it will outlast most German cars too in general (including mine) :(

Hyundai are develop for the affordable market. so you can't compare it like that.
giterdone 04-07-2005, 11:15 AM Hyundai are develop for the affordable market. so you can't compare it like that.
what do you think scions are? They were made for teenagers and college kids in mind, and to be affordable. That is why they drop horrible engines to keep cost down. When they first came out, they didn't have all those options available. They had college kids preview it, and they all got horrible ratings, so they went and made it all customizable so it would attract the youth of thet market. Now since it is made by Toyota it has the reliability factor, which old people and parents seem to like, and since toyota has TRD and it is a jap car, it definately wil have a good aftermarket line. But it does not mean it is a great car.
IS 300_M 04-07-2005, 12:20 PM ......That is why they drop horrible engines to keep cost down.
:eyecrazy i don't remember toyota making "horrible engine".........scion's engine came from the camry 4 cyl ;)

:confused from a business standpoint it only make sense to add options to your product just like every other car maker......why wouldn't they? it's not because of those college kids :nono as they're still using the same design inside and out........if you think they got such horrible ratings, don't you think they would have dropped it by now just like daewoo? ;)

LOL, I didn't mean horrible as in it would break down. But it has no power. The xA and xB have like just over 100hp. :)

The outside design is the same. But it's original plans did not intend to have all the options available as they do now. Now the whole interior, and rims and what not are all pretty much custumizable now. That was because the initial reaction to the car during it's beginning stages did not have good reviews. The cars were marketed from the beginning towards a younger crowd. Do you think a 50yr old woman cares about having CF interior?
PointMEby 04-07-2005, 03:36 PM the scion is moded... definitly. My friend has a 2000 323ci with UUC and can easily take one.

no, like i said you were right about their target being the young adults. but what i'm saying is from a business stand point, giving those options only makes it better. just like nissans nismo...........

yes i realize adding htose options is better for business. In fact that is the only way they have business with scion, is what I am saying. Originally they were not going to offer all those options. That came about once they realized how crappy the cars were.
I mean really, I understand fully what your saying. Every line of cars has options. But MOST companies do not offer that many options. That is the whole way they market those cars now, is based on their options. That is the only thing going for them. They are ugly - except for the tC.....which is only decent looking IMO - and slow.

Nah I don't want the M3 motor right now, I'm almost done with college and by the time I get a good job I'd rather just work toward getting a E46 M3 someday.
