during the winter i run my car every weekend or so out on the driveway since the cars a summer car. Last weekend though when i put the car in park it didnt seem to want to catch and the car would roll back. this is the first time my transmission has done this to me. im wondering what could be causing this. could it be the connection to the transmission, or the transmission itself? When it was slipping it would make a clicking noise like it was trying to catch. my transmission has had troubles before, but not like this.

i need to figure out what this problem is cause im putting my car back on the road next month! it would suck to have to find perfectly flat parking spots everywhere i go.

by the way my car is a 94 530i with the auto transmission.
also, i was wondering what would cause a rough idle. the idle is really bad during winter, i dont know if its my block, my chip or just something simple. i want to get her running smooth.

Um, even if it does slip, you do have a parking/emergency brake.

parking brake isnt enough to hold it. plus i wouldnt want the whole weight of the car just on that.

The e-brake should be able to hold it as long as it's not too steep a grade. It's a crappy problem, but if no one has a solution it seems like you could get by.

that has happened a few times on my e34 525. my driveway is angled and a few times when i have put it in park, it would start rolling more than the normal inch or so. i heard no clicking but after applying the break again it would remain stopped. since then i have been putting it in park and then setting the e-brake before taking my foot off the brake, which as SC David said, should be enough to hold the car. i don't know what the problem was, or if i still have it, but the e-brake is a simple solution, and i haven't had any problems since. if your e-break can't hold the weight of your car though, you might want to get that checked out too.

If the parking brake isn't enough to hold the car, you may need to have it adjusted or the shoes replaced.

As long as the trans still shifts fine, I wouldn't go near opening it up, just asking for a rebuild if you do.
