Per an earlier post the 5 speed trans in my 83 is toast but I'm running into some problems I need help with. I can't find anybody locally to rebuild it due the unavailability of parts and the tools required to diassemble it. I've talked with some guru's on the mainland and concenus was to swap in a 5 speed trans from an 80 to 82 320i which requires the swapping of the drive shaft, shifter plate and linkage. I found a used trans for my 83 and can get it for less than $600.00 shipped to Hawaii. I've been told by the aforementioned guru's that the 83 trans was inferior to the older 5 speeds. If anybody could provide suggestions as to which route to take on this ordeal, a source for parts or a rebuilt tranny I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for the help.
