View Full Version : AutoX Happenings From This Weekend
uberpanzer 03-22-2005, 05:17 AM Well, it was that time of the season again in San Diego. The local BMW CCA chapter hosted its second autoX of the season, this one in conjunction with the Impalla SS club. They don't USUALLY draw enough people to warrant (ie pay for) the use of the whole lot, but we do and could get another event this season if we joined up with them, so it was a no-brainer.
Anyway, I was out in my '83 again, in A Class (4 Cylinder Stock). One of my good friends Jason (e36is4me on here) also ran in my car, since it was his birthday (although I shoulda paid for him, but....). Peter (1ton320i) was also out there in his S14 powered e21 looking racer. And someone drove all the way down from Huntington Beach in a black e21 as well (I'm blanking on his name right now...DOH). His car was fairly well set-up for autoX, stripped down even more than mine (door shells and the cross bar were all that was left of his doors, with plexiglass bolted to the tops). It was an early model car, running a 2.0L M10, single carb'ed and he said it was bored 40 over with some other go-fast parts. He had suspension, a LSD, and would have run slicks had it not been drizzling off and on through out the day. Due to his mods, he was running in B Class (4 Cylinder Modified).
Anyway, Peter took best BMW time of the day (non-instructor) and I took 1st in A Class. Jason came in 2nd....and that was it for A Class. :devillook The guy in B Class did not finish in the top 2 in his class (both e30 318is cars), but was not last (that went to an e36 318is with a DASC that was NOT being driven too hard). Not a bad showing IMO for the e21's!
Pics will follow as soon as I find them online....(haven't seen my camera in like 2 months :mad )
G.J. Dixon 03-22-2005, 06:46 PM Not Bad!! :D :buttrock
I did an autocross about a month ago and here's the results from that:

It was a rather interesting day and I as usual caused a problem with my car, since they couldn't figure out how to class it. Someone there wrote up an editorial about that event and you can read that here. It gets interesting when they talk about my class! :evil2 Just to give you a hint, I was the only one out of the top cars on street tires, the rest were on race tires.

Stephen V 03-22-2005, 06:59 PM Holy crap, I love the cars that you beat!!!!
Yonkers320is 03-22-2005, 11:24 PM .....3XXi with fuel injection and unknown displacement........starting trouble GJ. They needed a turbo to keep up with your car.

You know me, I like to stir things up a little every now and then! :evil2 They all knew who I was, but hadn't seen me in a while, this was the first event I've done with this club in a long time, so they didn't know what to expect, but I was honest with them at tech, so its their problem if they classed me wrong. I'm just waiting till I actuallly get a set of race tires on the car. Race tires are good for about 2 seconds on a minute course, so if that's the case I would have had the fastest time being about 1.5 seconds faster then I was. I'll be ordering race tires later this week. They have another event this sunday, so if the weather is nice I'll go play with them again and see what they have to say. :evil2
AlaskaBimmer 03-23-2005, 03:27 AM no talking of auto-x. It snowed here today.....our first auto-x of the season is the end of April.....my E21 won't be auto-x any year soon. right now it's an auto and the suspention is shot....I have a manual tranny +parts lined up to convert it, just don't know what year my co-workers donar car is to see if it's a 4 or 5 speed gearbox...
So for now I'll run the 318i although this year I'll be in SM (under SCCA rules) with the new motor. so I'll get killed by modified turbo suburus and so on....
uberpanzer 03-23-2005, 04:13 AM Here are some of the pics. The results aren't posted yet, so I don't get to put a name to the guy in the black e21 until then (unless Peter speaks up...I noticed you were talking with him too).

bread320i 03-23-2005, 05:26 PM Damn thats nuts. Thanks for the pictures.
BoostedE21 03-23-2005, 06:29 PM  nice pics. MAN, when is the next one going to be thats near me? I want to do the autoX but i'm not going to drive to SD. What class will i be in again? :evil2
AE101 03-23-2005, 06:39 PM Side exit exhausts are cool :cool
bread320i 03-23-2005, 07:19 PM I can't wait until I get my side exhaust done! I'm just waiting until spring break. I really have to spend more time doing homework):
AlaskaBimmer 03-24-2005, 02:53 AM I can't wait to have an exhuast...mine is so full of holes the engine sounds pretty mean.....but before I can auto-x it I'll have to convert it to a manual tranny. an auto would be no fun to auto-x. I'll just have to keep using my 318 for a few more years.
uberpanzer 03-24-2005, 03:52 AM Well, depending on the gearing, it might not be THAT bad. I am usually in 2nd gear most of the time, although I have been tacking mine out at 8k to keep from shifting (due to a bad clutch). The auto box might not be THAT bad, esp if you are in 1st most of the time.
Attila, you will be in 4 Mod (B Class) if you run with BMW CCA. If you run with SCCA, I have NO idea what you will be in. You have enough mods to probably throw you into some prepared class, which would suck if you don't have slicks. Those SCCA guys get pretty hard core, and the general rules go if you are going so far as to run a turbo on a car that didn't come with it, you are probably going to be running slicks too, so they are legal in the class and EVERYONE who wants good times runs them. I'll just stick with BMW CCA until I get my driving skills (and car mods) up a few more notches.
AlaskaBimmer 03-24-2005, 04:57 AM In scca a modified or turboed engine will dump you into SM (Street Mod) which is where my performance M42 on my E36 lands me....the cam + the port & polish tosses me in with the turboed suburu imprezzas, and modded EVO VIII and so on...so I have a 0% chance of winning, but I'll have fun anyway....
uberpanzer 03-24-2005, 05:44 AM You never know. I got better times than that moded e21 up there. He had a LSD, I believe 320is front and rear sways (to my non-'is' front sway and no rear sway) and aftermarket springs/shocks/struts to my stock units. He also was sporting plexiglass windows on the doors, with even more stripped out of the interior than I had done. But I STILL managed to get better times than him, even with my failing clutch. I can mainly attribute this to my tires (which were leaps and bounds better than his).
Mind you this is on a straight car to car comparo. I don't know how good or bad of a driver he is. I'm not too bad, although not having anyone else in my class doesn't help show this. But with good enough tires and more wheel skill, you might be able to pull an upset against those other modded cars. That is what I'm planning on doing in my e21 once I get a new clutch, LSD and suspension. Engine mods may come, but I am aiming less at powerfull acceleration and more at not having to slow down much in the first place.
