Jedi801 03-19-2005, 04:26 PM I swear that first one is Adrian's. I wonder why he is selling it already.
chasmanbmwfan 03-19-2005, 07:14 PM That Silver M3 is a beaut. I'll pass on the Smurfmobile.
Cameron Hauck 03-19-2005, 08:02 PM Thanks Matt, just what I needed :)

Stuns me that someone would buy an new M3 but 5000 miles on it about a year, and then get ride of it.
Seeing as it is at an Acura dealer ... could it have been a trade in? On what?

might be someone who lost there job, or just couldn't justify the payment and didn't think it through before they signed.

I drove a few at the Susan Kommen Breast Cancer drive at BMW of M. Not impressed with them. Though we have discussed this here a few times before, I just feel it lacks that true sports car feel. The feeling of man (or woman of course) being in touch with machine.

SMG V10 = 0-60 4.2 sec(i think it was) = $80-90K
E39 M5 = 0-60 4.7 = $38-50K
Nope. I would be happy snappy with le' e39 M5. Not to mention it's not Bangled.
when is the v10 m5 actually going to be here?
I'm in the process of talking my mom into buying one and then acquiring it from her in a few years

Jedi801 03-21-2005, 03:46 AM It's all about being able to downshift entering a corner without taking your hands off of the wheel. Geoff is right SMG is what sports cars will all be like in the future. I want to test drive a new Audi TT with DSG, it is supposed to have really quick shifts.
And sunroofs are gay. I never use mine so it just makes my car heavier.

My breif ride with Scott proved the SMG was as smooth as an auto in traffic, and faster then a stick at WOT. I need one.
I had a friend drive DSG and said it rocked but is it an auto like like a step or tiptronic or is it a computer controlled clutch like SMG?

what did I tell you earlier!!!!
the SMG of the 6er or 5er is NOTHING like the SMG in the M3....
you need to drive an M3 with one, and drive it well. You will see, it does a better job than you can, and its far more functional.

From what I have read DSG is a bit better than SMG.
http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/uploads/01_014.jpeg
At a basic level DSG is a dual-clutch electronically controlled transmission that can be shifted manually via the shift lever or paddles on the steering wheel or it can be dumped into drive and used like an automatic - there is no clutch pedal. DSG utilizes 2 clutches, 2 main input shafts and 2 sets of gears - 1st, 3rd, 5th and Reverse on one shaft and 2nd, 4th, and 6th on the other. Because this is a wet system, there is an oil coiler and oil filter attached to the transmission.
DSG is completely different from BMW's SMG and Ferrari's F1 system in that it has two clutches instead of one. This means that DSG can fire off an upshift in .008 seconds whereas BMW's SMG takes .8 seconds to make the same shift.
Here's how it works (try to stay with us here): At a stop, the transmission drops into neutral. When you start to lift your foot off the brake, the clutch connected to input shaft 1 will smoothly engage moving the car forward much like a manual transmission except electronically and automatically. Input shaft 1 is now controlling first gear providing power to the wheels. While input shaft 1 is in first, input shaft two has selected 2nd gear in anticipation of the next upshift. When the transmission requests 2nd gear (either via the paddles, gate or automatically) clutch one opens up and clutch two engages in as quickly as .008 seconds. There is a certain amount of slippage in the clutches to ensure a smooth transition from gear to gear. In the event of a downshift, the transmission will request a throttle blip from the engine ECU to match revs and then shift down a gear - this happens in as quick as .6 seconds including the throttle matching. The transmission can even shift from 6th to 2nd gear without having to sequentially run down through every gear. In this case, DSG will switch input shafts from 6th gear going to 5th temporarily on input shaft 2 and then into 2nd with input shaft 1 while blipping the throttle to match revs - all in less than .9 seconds.

chmdrm 03-21-2005, 04:30 PM Very cool.
My understanding of SMG is that it is a dual plate clutch but this seems to be 2 seperate clutches. I'm assuming one is just a ring around the other?
Jedi801 03-21-2005, 04:31 PM SMG only has one clutch. DSG has two.

I have drive M3 with SMG, and rode with a pro driver on a track in his M3 with SMG. After I rode with him and saw what you can really do with a Sequential gear box i feel in love. On the same track there was a hard corner I would have to brake hard in my car down shift to third trail brake into the corner. But at the apex I needed to be in 2nd gear but since I was in the turn it was to hard to make the down shift and keep the car stable enough to hold it at speed.
When I rode with him it was the same but with his SMG he got to down shift perfectly in the corner and would pull out of it SOOOO much harder it was amazing. After that point I have loved it. I plan on buying one when I move back to Utah. ( hopefullay with the new comp. package)
