So this is the code that can't be cleared and seems to be what is causing my tranny to stay locked in limp mode.

The 5 cent version is that the DME can't find the EGS. We've been over the wiring, etc. and it is all in right, cleaned, not melted or shorted, and generally as it should be.

A search of BF.c finds 2 people that posted with the same problem, one in an E46 and one in an E36 M3 (we have the same tranny) but no fix was posted other then some references to replacing the EGS (trans computer) for $2700.

So I've emailed the guys who posted about having the code but seems my car is off to the dealer next for what looks like it is going to be an expensive repair.

:(

If only I could.

Did you drive the 6 to work?

read: there is an M sitting alone with the same tranny and EGS I need sitting unattended?

No I drove the M. Did you look on the bay or anything for an EGS?

No ... if it is in fact the EGS that melted down I will get a new one. Just interested to know why it would happen out of the blue on a car with 55K on it.

I know that in DSMs there was an issue of radial mounted caps leaking over time and taking out the tracks under them in the ECU but I'm betting the BMW version is all surface mount and thus not an issue. I'd also think that as this car is 10 years younger then the DSMs I've seen leak that is not the problem.

My next car will be a 69 Camero with a big block and a 4 barrel carb.

Thanks

Well the upside is that once fixed with all the new toys on it will be very fun to drive.

I've also now become an expert on CAN busses work. They are not to different then the audio networks I build at work and much of what I helped develop while at Harman Pro has found it's way via Harman / Becker into BMWs.

At least my car is old enough that it is not running on the MOST backbone they are moving to ... as a good chunk of that is on fiber and not copper. I'm runnign 112 channels of audio down an optic light pipe now with DiGiCo an while cool as hell, trouble shooting a beam of light is a PIA and when it breaks you can't really attack the cable with a soldering iron.

LOL

Roadie = People that you would not trust to wash your car but replace structural and electronic engineers while fighting off hangovers that would kill a horse. Homeless self taught gypsies that are entrusted to set up and operate millions of dollars of custom state of the art electronic equipment, tons of which are suspended above the heads of people who actually paid to be there.

Always makes me laugh to watch people pay to sit under 10+ tons of moving gear that was hung from points picked (after taking into effect the snow load on the roof) by someone who has legally changed thier name to Rat Boy.

Can this component be swapped in from a donor car, to pinpoint the problem?

Not sure. Issue is that from what I've read the EGS can't be talked to by most scan tools so it kind of has to go to the dealer to even find out what is going on.

I'm hoping that it is something stupid we missed like a fuse .... or the Dinan tranny software messing up and not letting it out of limp mode.

Murry maybe able to just reset it and I'm good to go, but they may also turn around and tell me I need a new EGS for a million dollars.

Sadly I think I 'm now at thier mercy :(
