View Full Version : I HAVE ORDERED MY M30 ( 6 not 8 )
KarlSpackler 03-17-2005, 10:12 PM Thats right... let the swapping begin....
for the M30 3.5 I6 and a matching 5 speed tranny both with a 2 year warrenty for 1869.00 with shipping from Bavarian Auto Recyclers :buttrock
Thats a good price, they are both used right? Not refurbished.
KarlSpackler 03-18-2005, 10:57 AM Thats a good price, they are both used right? Not refurbished.
yes used. he stated that they both had under 100,000 miles but did not have exact numbers but the warrenty kinda makes everything ok
tjn182 03-18-2005, 11:01 AM M30B34 or M30B35? The b35 came in the e34 5er's -- It's a more powerful engine than the M30B34.
But welcome to the M30 powered team :)
Sounds like a good deal. How do they work the warranty? New motor plus labor? Just parts? Cost to repair existing motor?

well to tell you the truth i dunno... i know it is the 3.5 6 not the 3.0 v8 ???
Sounds like a good deal. How do they work the warranty? New motor plus labor? Just parts? Cost to repair existing motor?
from what i understand i belive that it is the cost to repair the existing motor if it fails so with labor... i will get the paper work with the shippment
KarlSpackler 03-18-2005, 01:48 PM oh yea and does anyone have a write up on the swap?? my friend and i have done many swaps including a recent rb20det from a skyline into a 90 240sx but we had a write up to follow.... soooo the hondas and nissans that we have worked on are prob gunna be kinda the same right???? i mean how difficult can a bavarian be to work with??
any help??
shragon 03-18-2005, 02:30 PM congrats on your motor purchase. keep us updated on the swap.
the 3.0 v8 is actually labeled m60, like the 4.0 v8.
KarlSpackler 03-18-2005, 02:43 PM congrats on your motor purchase. keep us updated on the swap.
the 3.0 v8 is actually labeled m60, like the 4.0 v8.
i see
what are the two versions of the m30???
shragon 03-18-2005, 03:34 PM the m30 used in the e28 and the m30 used in the e34.
KarlSpackler 03-18-2005, 03:38 PM the m30 used in the e28 and the m30 used in the e34.
ok well he asked what do i want ( the small 6 or the big 6? which i am assuming he meant the different verisons.) i told him that i wanted the bigger motor and he gave me a price and i gave him paypal :D
so im assuming that i got the larger of the two 3.5 motors
but if you go to www.bmwe34.net and go to different versions they list the 3.0 v8 as an m30 as well as a 3.0 i6 m30 and a 3.5 i6 m30
LJSE34 03-18-2005, 04:03 PM The 3.0L M30 never existed over here. That M30 at 3.5L is a great engine! I might be thinking aout a swap as well in the future. Btw, how much did you pay for the transmission? Goodluck with the swap!
Dark Helmet 03-18-2005, 04:39 PM also... there is an M30B32 I don't see listed.
I blew one up last spring... it make interesting sounds.
now sporting anti-high-rev B34....
Dark Helmet 03-18-2005, 04:42 PM also karl... dude, when you are down in lincoln, you need to see our M30s, we're addicts...
just in the small group here, we've got 1 B34, 2 B35s an S38, and the remnants of a B32...
armen is mr. M30 in these parts....
KarlSpackler 03-18-2005, 04:43 PM The 3.0L M30 never existed over here. That M30 at 3.5L is a great engine! I might be thinking aout a swap as well in the future. Btw, how much did you pay for the transmission? Goodluck with the swap!
thank you. the tranny was like 100.00 more than the engine i believe.... to tell ya the truth i never recieved an itemized price list. he gave me a package deal soooo... call them up and find out. i belive the motor was 895.00
Dark Helmet 03-18-2005, 04:46 PM not bad with warranty... mine was $425, with shipping. 106K engine only. I only got 3mos on the warranty though.
Mr Project 03-18-2005, 06:23 PM There were a lot of versions of the M30 engine, starting in the late '70's IIRC. It grew from around 2.8l up to the 'terminal displacement' of 3.5 in the E34/E32, ignoring of course the S38 variant that sorta stepped things up a notch. :)
But yeah, there are a lot of different M30s, and the B35 is usually considered the one to have. With the newer Motronic engine management and a chip, it's not a bad motor. And still dang near bulletproof outside of the occasional headgasket or dasmafia. :D
drew900 03-19-2005, 02:41 AM How would you be able to tell if you have a B34 or B35?
Dark Helmet 03-19-2005, 10:02 AM And still dang near bulletproof outside of the occasional headgasket or dasmafia. :D
yet you still let me drive on occasion.... i sometimes question your sanity man.
Dark Helmet 03-19-2005, 10:03 AM How would you be able to tell if you have a B34 or B35?
the B34 won't like to rev past 5500rpm.....???
and actually, a B35 won't fit into an e28-era chasis without major work. and the flip-side is true as well.
basically, the B35 is in the E32 and E34, the B32 and B34 are in the E23, 24, 28.
KarlSpackler 03-19-2005, 12:19 PM so no one has a link to the swap??? i am going from...
m20 --> m30
auto --> manual
Dark Helmet 03-19-2005, 06:58 PM just a question... why didn't you ujust sell the 525i and buy a 535?
i would hope that for the $3K you are going to drop on this swap, in addition to your 525, you could have gotten a CHERRY 535i....
I think "eric the big polish guy" got his for 5900, and it was in excellent shape... absolutely wonderful, sachs kit, 17s, great paint, just an awesome car.
Mr Project 03-19-2005, 09:59 PM 1 - The B34 looks a little different from the B35. :) Valve cover, intake manifold, engine management stuff, there are subtle differences. Plus the engine mount bolts are different. But rest assured if it fits easily in an E34, it's a B35. :)
2 - I don't know of any good swap tutorials, probably because it's not very easy and like Jeremy said, most people would just sell the 525 and buy a 535, since the price difference is not usually that big. But, you are where you are, so...
Check out these links, do a lot of reading, and ask the E34 experts...at bimmer.info. :)

You'll need a lot of parts besides the tranny to do that auto-manual conversion. I hope you have a 5-speed parts car nearby or a good junkyard. www.car-part.com is a good junkyard search when you realize there's a part you don't have.
Also, the guys at www.bmaparts.com have always treated me great, and the prices are good. If you need a new part, give them a shout.

ohh yea and it is because i have a cracked head in the m20 :D so it is kinda hard to sell bro plus i love the look of my car and its stance
Mr Project 03-20-2005, 01:15 AM Well, it still would have been more economically viable to buy a used head and fix the M20 and then sell it, but hey, it's your car, and I get the attachment thing. :)
Cacatfish 03-20-2005, 04:04 AM Hey, I dont know what you have, but Id be making sure that it is a M30B35and not a B34. The latter will not work for you.
Make sure they know it is for an E34 and not an E28.
Colin
Dark Helmet 03-20-2005, 07:28 PM BAR is usually good about that, IIRC.... shouldn't be an issue.

yea they are aware that it is a m20 powered e34
Dark Helmet 03-21-2005, 02:13 PM also, you will want to get a different set of springs for the car as the front, especially, will weigh a bunch more....

well a little update.... i put a hold on the check that bavarian auto recyclers recieved yesterday!!!! i told them to hold it for me for 2 weeks ( also held the money through my bank ;) ) i am seriously contemplating just buing either a 525 m50 5-speed, a 535 5-speed or a 540i 6-speed so i am currently searching.
do any of you know if you can buy service contracts for cars that are 10 years old and have 100 k + miles??
how reliable it a 1995 540i 6-speed? doesnt that have a nikasil block that is known to go out??
any help would be liked
Cacatfish 03-23-2005, 02:33 AM Looking back through the posts, I see where they asked if you wanted a "big six" or "small" six. Both the 3.4 and 3.5 are considered "big" sixes. The M20 is traditionall called the small six, though sometimes the M50 gets that tag too.
Im pretty sure their warranty only covers the parts, no labor and no shipping. I may be mistaken, but I had a friend who got a tranny from them and Im pretty sure that is the deal she had. I dont know if that will help you decide.
Also to consider is if you are going to do the work yourself. If you could replace the cracked M20 head yourself, the cost for parts would be minimal. The cost for the labor of a whole different motor and tranny as well as pedal box, drive shaft (will probably be different), motor mounts, etc etc will probably get real expensive and likely more than you have envisioned.
Having been in the same situation and thrown stupid money at a car because I wanted it "just so", I would really suggest either fixing the head and keeping the car, or else sell it for parts and buy a 535i or 540i.
The Nikasil issue isnt completely cut and dry. I would do a little research on it and see. Many that have made it this far with no problems probably wont have any. Still a 535i is probably a safer and cheaper bet. That is the one I would choose. :)

i am def. leaning that way... i also am looking at a Saab b/c i used to own one and my father currently has one sooooo we will see but there is not much for e34s for sale now
Mr Project 03-23-2005, 08:35 AM Service contracts - No, probably not. I couldn't find any aftermarket warranty companies that would sell a warranty for a car with over 100k.
M20 - Like Cacatfish said, that M20 would not be that hard to fix yourself. Take the head off, take it to a compentent local machine shop, and see if they can fix it. If not, pick up a used M20 head in decent shape, have them freshen it up, and bolt it all back together. The whole operation should cost less than $500 if you can do most of the labor....and if you can handle an engine swap, you can handle a headgasket on these engines.
I'd try to fix the M20, it would make the car much easier to sell. Then just be patient, there are nice 535i 5-speeds that pop up from time to time. Heck, I'd sell mine if the price was right. :)
Dark Helmet 03-23-2005, 12:29 PM badeer, I though I had a first right of refusal on that car!!!!!?????
I'll vacate my right for BOTH RX-7 seats.... :D:D:D:D
Dark Helmet 03-23-2005, 12:31 PM also Karl.... don't got 540 IMO... too many things that COULD go wrong... if you grenade an M30, its like $500/600.... you grenade an M60.... start adding zeros.

ok well what we had thought was at least a head gasket possible a cracked head was actually none of the above... :D i had a vacume leak in one of my radiator hoses allowing air to get into the heating core causing my car to overheat for a second.
we had thought it was a cracked head b/c we had replaced everything else having to do with my cooling system within the last 2 months such as radiator, thermastat, fan clutch, etc...... all we had to do was change to hose and bleed the system and POOF all better :alright now my car runs like new. so now i am going to try to sell it and buy something with a 5-speed
Dark Helmet 03-23-2005, 01:29 PM muuuuuuuuuuch better.
wanna turbo?
Mr Project 03-23-2005, 03:56 PM Karl, you can drive mine when you're in town if you want a baseline to compare stuff to. PM me and I'll give you my cell #.

but i will for sure be back someday but i still wanna see your guys cars in lincoln when i come down fo sho
Mr Project 03-24-2005, 12:05 AM I love the 9000 aeros. I'm toying with a Saab for my wife's next car, and I would love to find a 9k aero for the right price.

323I Junkie 03-24-2005, 03:32 PM Saab
Dark Helmet 03-24-2005, 04:24 PM I don't have an issue with the 9-5s so much as the 9-3s.... GM murdered that car.
323I Junkie 03-24-2005, 04:30 PM Never finshed my thought..
The single Saab Ive worked on in my entire life reminded me so much of a BMW I began to wonder where the company came from

depends, if I can get the '68 to run... you're hosed.
otherwise, armen and justin will be your competition... I own all in 1st gear.. then its all bad news for me.
Dark Helmet 03-25-2005, 11:51 AM I think GM is the best american car company...
if you take away the LS1/LS2.... that company is dead. deader than dead.
DCX is generally in the first phases of a long-range beat-down of ford and GM IMO. GM abandoned theier RWD platform, Ford can't put anything together right (and their sedans can sub for a drug-induced coma), and DCX is actually building vehicles they are selling for sticker.
teh mustang isn't enough for ford (although I love it) and GM has NOTHING to bring to the table outside the GTO and vette. again, SMALL productions.
however, currently the GMC trucks are the best deal in gasoline engined trucks... dodge for diesel anyday, GMC for the LS1-derivatives.
323I Junkie 03-25-2005, 12:12 PM Whats DCX?
Dark Helmet 03-25-2005, 01:12 PM the NYSE ticker symbol for Daimler-Chrysler

such an amazing looking machine
Dark Helmet 03-25-2005, 01:54 PM they are all over here.... but I've not seen the SRT-8 yet....

yea but on air ride??
Mr Project 03-25-2005, 02:43 PM J, GM did not abandon the upcoming RWD (Delta?) platform. Just delayed.
DCX has a revolution every 10 years and nearly dies each time inbetween. Don't get excited. :)
