I'm quite interested in building a custom turbo system for my dad's '85 535i. My only concern is where I should tap into the motor for the turbo oil feed line, the return line is easy enough. Also needed is an oil cooler. Same problem here, where do I tap into the motor in order to route the oil through the cooler? Can someone tell me where the best place on the engine is to get oil for the turbo and oil cooler?

Thanks!

i dont think an oil cooler is necessary although i dont think it would hurt. i have the tcd turbo and i have a oil temp gauge (amongst others) and with no oil cooler, my oil temps never even get warm. i have had the car out in semi warm weather but most of it has been winter driving type stuff. we'l see wut happens come summer time.

My other engine died -- I blame no oil cooler as one of the reasons -- the engine would get HOT HOT HOT!! Imagine your oil taking heat from an object that is as hot as your exhaust gasses -- you will need a way to cool it off.

Jared -- find a oil filter housing from an alpina 5 or 6 series or from a 745i -- it will have both oil cooler outlets and the 745i will have a turbo out outlet.

If you get the filter housings from the alpina's -- you can just put the housing on a drill press and tap a fitting in.

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm thinking the 745i oil filter housings aren't too common at wrecking yards, especially here in Canada. Do you think it's possible to tap into my existing oil filter housing for the turbo and oil cooler lines?

Oil feed -- yes, but not the oil cooler lines I don't believe.

So I can take the turbo oil feed from the oil filter housing. Now where do I go with the oil cooler lines?

tjn182, where are your oil lines located?

Thanks!

My oil cooler lines come off of the 745i oil filter housing. I used hydrolic hoses with the connections super fitted. The oil cooler itself is located behind the opening of my front "IS" spoiler - It provides very good, out of engine cooling. I've had some insane differences in temperature from (Total guesstimate) what feels like 140*F to 30*F... (they were FREEZING cold coming back from the oil cooler).

I'll have to take a picture, I'll get back to you on that.
