:help
I just failed my emissions a couple hours ago and i need some help?!?

The reason for the failure were 3 different OBII codes, if someone could translate these for me and give a recommendation as to how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it!?

The 3 codes where:
P0111 - Intake Air Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem
P0130 - Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0136 - Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

Thanx!

Is your motor stock ?

I am not sure but the way those codes looks like oxygen sensors, how much milage on the sensors ?

Do you have any check engine lights ?

Ps: Maybe you can have a friend with a reset tool reset the codes and then go back and make them test and pass you and then worry about it after? ;)

yes i have a stock engine, 93k on car (not sure if this is original sensor) and the check engine light is on.

Tried reseting light but by the time i got to emissions the light was already back on, so i took the ligh bulb out and they still checked the codes and failed me!

You've got a bad intake air temperature sensor and bad pre & post cat O2 sensors. At 93K miles I'd bet that both O2 sensors need replacement, and probably have needed replacement for a while. The intake air temp fault could be a bad sensor or a bad connection and will need to be checked out and fixed/replaced as necessary.

Fix those, clear the fault codes, and if you dont get any other faults you should pass inspection.

The OBD 2 cars do a self diagnosis.
This is why the emissions station can attach their diagnostic connector and read what your ECU already knows.
Usually the technician will look for the CEL lamp and if it is not working that is cause for immediate failure in our area.
Suggest you pick up a Bentleys manual for your car and read into the trouble codes. This will help you work through a diagnosis with the other members on this site.
Also you may wish to do a Google search and find a software program that will allow you to connect your laptop and see what the emissions is reading during your inspection test. A good software program will come with the CD, a tutorial manual and the proper cable connector between the diagnostic port in the car and your laptop serial port. A typical package like this will run somewhere in the neighborhood of 225$ US.
The unfortunate circumstance is that BMW will not release the diagnostic repair flow charts for OBD2 service. Without the proper flow charts, which contain voltages, pressures, signal values and test points, we are basically left with just the trouble code and the only remaining option is to replace parts that pertain to the trouble code in the hope that we hit the problem. If changing the part does not clear the problem the diagnosis becomes exponentially more difficult.
The software will help in the diagnosis because it will give you the ability to see "Freeze Frame" data, this is a readout of the operating conditions of the engine the moment the trouble code occured. The software will also allow you to see the signal input to the ECU in a waveform so that you can compare the O2 sensors to each other as far as the quality of the waveform and response frequency. One final feature is that the software will allow you to read the self diagnostic status page which will tell you if you should even bother to go back to the testing station. If you don`t have all green bars in all the categories of the diagnosed systems then you aren`t ready for re-inspection. Where we live you only get one additional retest.

how much would the 2 O2 sensors cost to replace, is that a DIY project and where is the intake sensor located (price??)??

Would there happen to be a write-up for the replacement of the o2 sensors anywhere??

Thank you very much!

just type go to a sponsors page for parts/prices. If you have any tool skills you should be able to replace. Buy the Bentley Book..

when i search for the two o2 sensors i find the post cat o2s but i haven't found the pre cat o2 sensor yet. Are both the sensors what needs to be replaced or just the post cat o2 sensors?

also i can't seem to find any part that would be an air intake sensor?

Any ideas??

Thanx!

According to the fault codes you need both O2 sensors. I assume that you are doing an on-line search for the parts. I don't know where to suggest you look, but I'm sure you could get the part from a dealer.

I don't know where the intake temp sensor would be, but I'd guess that a dealer would.

The pre-cat sensors will be located on the exhaust manifold either at the juncture of the Y-pipe or on later models up on the cast manifold up by the head.
The air intake sensor is typically located on the intake manifold, usually tucked out of sight but not impossible to find.
Get yourself a Bentleys, good investment for the money.
