Ok here is the deal. I have a 1996 328i. In preperation for a new s/c kit (RMS stg 1) I have on the way I recently did a leak down test. I heard bubbling when checking cylinder #3. Since the test my coolant consumption has gone way up. I think whatever problems I might of had prior was made worse by the test. I have filled up the coolant twice in the past month or so, and this is not a daily driver! Anyway white smoke on start up and that usually lasts until I drive it hard for a couple minutes (after it is warmed up of course). All signs point to either a cracked cylinder head, a bad head gasket or a combination of the two.

With that being said here are my questions:
1- With a stage 1 RMS kit on the way should I bother getting a thicker head gasket. If so which one, how thick?

2- Would it be worth it or necessary to get the ARP head bolts?

3- If the head is cracked beyond repair what am I looking at, money wise, for another one.

4- Is in necessary to rebuilt the head while off, or is it ok to slap it back on assuming there are no cracks.

Thanks for taking the time. Any associated links would be appreciated. ALSO IS ANYONE WILLING TO RENT ME THE TOOLS TO REMOVE THE HEAD? I WOULD ONLY NEED THEM FOR A WEEK OR SO, ASSUMING THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE HEAD.

Thanks,
Erik

I dont think a thicker head gasket is in order on a sc application unless you plan on exceeding 11psi (at least with the M motor I can't say for sure with your motor).
You can price heads at bavarian engine exchange.

I believe that if you have something off the car I prefer to do what ever upgrades I can at that time that are accessible mechanically and if I can afford it. The head bolts should be replaced once the head is off, so why not upgrade and or rebuild the head, maybe even cams?

Well thats good. Not sure about my future plans though. :devillook

I will definitly replace the head bolts, not sure if I should get stock or the ARP. As far as the upgrades...... port & polish = $$, rebuild = $$, everything = $$. Kinda strapped for cash after the supercharger. At this point just trying to make the engine reliable at an affordable cost.
