Was preparing to order the new Z-2 formula when I read that Z-1 is mandatory for use prior to Z-2.

Is this accurate, or just marketing on their part? Does the use of Z-1 in contrast to P21S or other cleaners, create a better shine or enhance durability?

A1's mandatory only if you don't use ZFX. Z1 IIRC has to be put down as the base coat; then without removing it, apply Z2 or Z5 over it. Allow to haze, then remove. You can then put another layer of Z2/Z5 over it without additional Z1. Z1 is not a cleaner, simply a prep agent that allows Z2/Z5 to bond to the paint.

Supposively, if you do multiple layers using ZFX (like 3-4), you will get slight hazing that goes away that you don't see with Z1. But then again, to do multiple layers with Z1, you're spending most of the day, instead of under an hour.

All the latest Zaino products are meant and designed to be used with ZFX. Z1 is fairly antiquated. Do your paint cleaner, wash (Z7) then use ZFX w/ Z2 or Z5 for optimal results.
