This one is very simple.
You want to slide something under the edge of the door sill to get a gap between the sill and the car.

Then just stick your hand under the door sill and feel for a clip or where there is the greatest tension. Then carefully apply pressure on both sides and pull up to release the clip.

The continue to do this along the length of the door sill until it is free

The back side of the door sill looks like this

It is easy to break these clips. On one sill I broke none and on the other sill I broke 2.
Just get some fresh replacements if you are going to put the sills back on the car.

Wow, buddy, your future mods list for your future car is pretty ghey. Ever think about just buying a civic? You should....

Anyway, back on topic, I've been wondering how to remove these.... How many clips are on each strip?

Whoa!!! The stock E36...at least after 96 or 97....were chrome. Ive seen some that look really bad due to neglect but mine look really nice. I will miss them....

Both my 97s had chrome. It may come down to production date. Though my previous car was early production date and my current one is late production date.

that little black circle? oh man that sucker would NOT come out i had to scratch my paint just to get it out with a screw driver.....blah. I gotta remove my sills now and fix the scratches i ffeel guilty about putting on there months later..lol. this would be easy if those things were not on there.

the round black fasteners on the 4dr's rear sills are a two piece clip. It has a small pin in the center that secures the fastener. I pushed the pin in, and was able to pull out the whole fastener. I learned this after destroying one side first : (
