View Full Version : Drove a GT3 and an E55 last week.....
ArcticFox 03-07-2005, 11:55 AM Well, my buddy Derek (iamderek) bought a 05 GT3 the other week and come over to show me. We took a drive and I was impressed. Such a nice car! That thing really fricken flies when you wind it up. went from 40 to 125 like nothing....handling was wonderful, but a tad floaty on the front end IMHO. Could be tire pressures, etc, or the weight in the rear. But at any rate, a fine fine automobile.
Test drove a new E55 (50 mmiles on it) the other day for the hell of it. Holly crap....that thing is a torque monster. and the sound of the supercharger at startup, that alone is worth the price of admission (95k). It came with the seats that electronically bolster more and more as you corner. It increases with lateral G's, pressing you fron the right or left. Pretty cool feature, but I could live without it.
I have been thinking what I am going to buy as a replacement for my M3. Not that i am replacing her anytime soon as i have Twin Screw plans, but just wanted to see what was out there. I want something a tad bigger, like 5 series or E class. So the E55 is a logical choice. The trunk is CAVERNOUS on that phucker. The trunk on the S class is measily in comparison, to my amazement.
However, after driving the E55, and comparing it to the M5 that Derek owns too, i think I like the M5 a little better. i like the E55's brute strength and looks more, but the BMW's reliability and handling more. So, more than likely, the next car in the stable will be an M5 (not the new one....I still do not like the new bangle cars, or even ones that look anything like Bangle's work). Also, consumer reports' reliability history of MB have been all solid black dots! LOL. I dont want a car that is gonna phuck up all the time, even if I do have a warranty!
Anyways, just thought I would share. The next thing I would like to drive would be a Challenge car, or a 360. :-) Not that I would get one, but you know....lol.
JonBoy1979 03-07-2005, 01:13 PM You meant relative reliability, I am sure. Neither of those cars is going to be remotely close to bulletproof. As you noted, the E55 is less reliable but neither of them is exactly stellar.
Furthermore, the E55 trunk has 15.9 cu. ft of space while the S-Class has 15.4 cu. ft of space. Not exactly "measly" or even remotely noticeable in size difference.
No flame intended, just a bit of clarification...

I assumed he was taking into account the trunk volume relative to the size of the vehicle. I would expect a larger vehicle to have a larger trunk, and if it doesn't, that's noteworthy.

No offense taken. The trunk volume is an interesting comparison. When standing there looking at the two, the S looks WAY smaller.....by a lot. the E you could fit four sets of clubs lengthwise in the fricken trunk....on the S, it looked like they would definately go sideways and be tight at that. Interesting to see they are so close...they don't look it at all.
As far as reliability. I always thought that MB made some good cars. However, just by reading consumer reports the other day, I was noticing how poorly (on the whole) MB did vs. BMW. I know niether is bulletproof (I have owned several BMW's), but it looked like the M5 would be "more" reliable than the E class, thats all. Not that it super reliable or anything. lol. I was just a bit shocked to see the solid black dots on nearly all of the MB models (mostly because of electrical issues). The only BMW that was "poor" was the 7 series (no surprise there--they have always sucked in that sense).
edit: I have owned a few MB's too, and had minimal problems, but most were electrical. I still dont think they are "unreliable". I was just a bit shocked that they did so poorly in Consumer reports.
Anyway, I still love that E55. If I did even get one, i would sell it before the warranty ran out...no question about that.
thanks for the info. Also, regarding the slushbox issue. Whwn you have over 600 ft lbs of torque and nearly 600 hp, driving a slushbox is not that big of a deal, for me.

But you have to remember that sheer volume doesn't make a huge trunk, or even one that looks big. The shape of a trunk is just as or more important than the straight volume. A cube 3' on a side is way more useful than a box that's 1' by 1' by 27"*, even though they're both 27 cu. ft.
*unless you're carrying flagpoles.
ArcticFox 03-07-2005, 06:18 PM LOL. Yeah, come to think of it, it is how it is arranged. The E is more long and slender. the S is shorter but boxier/taller. The E would fit my needs better I think, but i aint even there yet....just looking for now.
///Mon3y 03-07-2005, 07:43 PM we have an e55 in the garage. no complaints. you will be surprised how well it takes the kids to school and gets groceries, and is then able to toast almost anything on the highway. its still long and handling isnt the same as the m5 even with the air suspension on stiff :rolleyes . all in all though the car is insanely powerful and badass, comfortable, and practical.

slickav 11-23-2005, 12:59 PM I'm guessing he decided on the GT3? hahaha
VADER13 11-23-2005, 07:43 PM E55's are Autobahn monsters..GT3's are road terrors..

hey man, did you get tired of only two seats?
moroza 10-30-2006, 08:50 PM If only they weren't slushboxes...wonder if any manual could fit the E55 and handle its torque?
dmb882 01-06-2007, 02:16 AM Dad has an 05 E55 and loves the car. His only complaint is it doesn't have a stick in it!
His warrenty just went out too so he needs to start ordering some new parts so he can keep up with me :)
