View Full Version : 330xi vs. 2004 Maxima
NY330xi 02-27-2005, 03:19 PM This is a Dad's Car vs Dad's Car race...I just find that kinda funny
Anyway, my buddy has an 04 Maxima (yes the new one's with 265 hp) and its completely stock, 5 speed auto...and I figured he would probably beat me, but what the hell you know...
Off the line, I power-braked to 2300 rpm and the light went green. Maxima can't floor it off the line because his wheels spin all day long, so that hurts him. Being said, I took him off the line and had 1/2 car (he was probably 5 feet behind my bumper) to around 45. Basically what happened then was as soon as he hit 2nd gear, he pulled like crazy. By 60 he had a car and kept pulling, by around 80 maybe 2-3 cars. I was very suprised, this thing pullllled. So I figured lets do a 60 roll, and we did, I floored it first then he did, and he IMMEDIATELY pulled again, 2-3 car lengths by 90.
Then he took me for a ride, and that thing feels like its def. a high 14s car, even with the automatic. I really think that even a stick 330i would have trouble with one, especially if it was the 6 speed Max. Very impressed by the 3.5 VQ engine. Part of me hates to say this, but I dont believe the new 255 hp/221 tq 330i will be able to keep up with the new 300hp/260tq G35 6 speed....

Don't be so sure...I have raced an auto Nissan Maxima [yes new 265hp auto] from a roll of about 40 and I took him without any problems, he could not touch me...I still respect its power though. Raced a 222hp Maxima [prev gen] stick both from a roll and a start, walked on it no problem at all...just b/c 330's only have 225hp doesn't mean they can't walk on these cars...of course, if your dad's car was a stick, things would be different ;)

Damn FWD :)
Got a friend in Charlotte that has finally broken into the 12's in his 2002 6 speed maxima; and that's without any forced induction. Very fun cars.. I always thought you get a lot for your money in a maxima.
SilverStreak 02-28-2005, 12:47 PM Gearing, weight, and RWD vs FWD for launching, will all play a factor... My father in law has a new Maxima... color me unimpressed with it's get up and go...
NY330xi 02-28-2005, 01:34 PM Maybe compared to a 6 speed ZHP that runs 14.0 @ 97.5!!!!!
I was comparing the auto Maxima to an auto 330 or even a stick 330i, non PP.
It was just a lot quicker then my 330xi..a lot...

Hmmm... depends on who's launching it... :evil2
The Max will "feel" quicker due to the torque, but if you take them both to the drag strip with accurate timing equipment, etc, I bet you'd be surprised by the end result...
Example of what torque will do to the seat-o-the-pant-o-meter...
My 99 Mustang GT ran 13.91 at 100.2 mph bone stock. My Z3 3.0, when it was bone stock ran 13.89 at 99.5 mph. Pretty close, right?
The GT "felt" 10 times faster than the Z3 did... cuz of the torque...
IS 300_M 02-28-2005, 02:36 PM you have to remeber too that the 330 guy was driving an xi model......which is like any other 4wd car, it loses steam up top :D

Sure it's heavier and an auto, too, but I bet if you ran both at the strip, they'd be within 2 tenths of one another...
bellavus 02-28-2005, 02:44 PM initially, with the AWD, the xi would have more grip on the ground and better able to launch, but then the weight of it catches up.

The new maxima ain't exactly a flyweight either, though, Kitty dear... :D

i know, i've driven the new maxima as a rental car. The thing is pretty quick, and I was running around all day in it trying to race people. I did the same thing in the X3, but no one would want to race me :(
just talking about the advantage that the xi had at the begnning of the race. :D

......would that be a couple of car lengths? :dunno
SilverStreak 02-28-2005, 02:54 PM Oh yeah, for a car it's size, the performance, for the price, etc, it's a nice package.
SilverStreak 02-28-2005, 02:55 PM ......would that be a couple of car lengths? :D
At the 1320' line at around 95-100 mph, not quite, maybe 1....

i don't know how you calculate it but i thought it would be close :D

I'm sure there's a formula, I was just going from personal experience of watching endless drag races, seeing the difference in car lengths, and then seeing the corresponding timeslips afterwards, etc...
A good way to put things into perspective for some folks who have never been to the strip and think 1 second difference isn't a big deal, etc...
Picture standing at the line, and the first car passes by- whoosh.
One one thousand, woosh- the 2nd car goes by.
Both cars going about 100 mph. A dozen car lenths, perhaps? Maybe more...

yeah this is where i'm basing it too......hence my conclusion that at 97mph, 2 tenths is close to 2cl..... :D it could be 1 or 2 but it would be really hard to tell :D
NY330xi 02-28-2005, 05:58 PM I used to race this kid in a 2003 Mustang GT (brand new 3,000 miles) that had it at the strip running 14.3's all day...and i raced him in my 330xi, which runs like 15.3 ish,...and by 100 he was probably 2 1/2 bus lengths away...10 car lengths maybe? Just my two cents but im no expert.
Off topic: Silversteak, have you raced any E36 M3's in your ZHP? Sounds like a very close race to me.
SilverStreak 02-28-2005, 06:05 PM Not yet, but I'm eagerly awaiting the chance... :buttrock

first step is to get out of that house and in to your car.... :D

2 days of snow here = taking the wife's FWD car with Blizzaks on it, over the ZHP to meetings, etc... ;)

it's not better over here with all that rain :D .......i know you've been busy working at home but what about the wifey? what is she using to commute? don't tell me she's using a beater so that you can use her baby as your beater :buttrock :evil2 :devillook
SilverStreak 03-02-2005, 12:09 PM She drives to the train stn everyday and leaves her car in the lot, so I just drove her and picked her up, is all...
IS 300_M 03-02-2005, 02:35 PM gotcha! ....so you do get to drive everyday :D just not on your zhp. whoever says you almost don't drive anymore is a liar :nuts
SilverStreak 03-02-2005, 04:59 PM Not every day, to be honest. In bad weather, I'll take her car, but in good weather, I can get stuck at home all day with work easily...
IS 300_M 03-02-2005, 05:29 PM ok so the new maxima is pretty fast huh? :evil2
