View Full Version : cage for DSP car...
sac02 02-27-2005, 03:06 AM Ok I have my rulebook, but I could still use a little clarification from any auto-x'ers w/ cages.
What are the rules pertaining to modifying the interior to accomodate the cage? We want to put the front pillar as far forward as possible, instead of having to drop them in front of the dash. The current goal is to run the forward tubes all the way down the A-piller to the footwell, requiring modification to the dash (small hole) in the corner by the base of the windshield.
The solo rulebook itself is no help, all it does is refrence another source.
Street Prepared category 15.2.h.3:
"...Installation of roll cages in SP cars must follow the same standards for interior modifications to accomodate the cage installation as those which are applicable to Showroom Stock cars in Club Racing."
WTF? Seeing as I'm not a club racer, I don't have a copy of the Showroom Stock rules on hand.
Can anyone tell me if it's ok to modify the dash for the sole purpose of cage installation in a DSP car? Oh, this is an e30, btw.

Steve J. 02-27-2005, 10:40 AM Just curious, why do you want a cage in Auto-x? Are you under weight and need to meet a minimum?
Also, www.bmwccaclubracing.com for rules.
jmott 02-27-2005, 11:08 AM Don't know the answer to your question, but a cage will slow you down...

Sorry, forgot to mention, SCCA soloII, not bmwcca.
The car will see extensive HPDE's and I imagine it will not be more than a season or two before I venture into club racing, so I'm getting a cage done while the car is down getting the engine rebuilt.

Steve J. 02-28-2005, 10:48 AM Wait so what class are you planniing to race in SCCA club racing?
Just find out what cage specs are allowed and have a reputable shop make a normal spec cage for that class.

Current plans for the car:
(Present) SCCA soloII DSP competition, and HPDE use.
(Future, someday) SCCA or BMWCCA club racing (probably BMWCCA? - plans for club racing are totally unsure at the moment)
Like I may have mentioned, I don't know a ton about club racing at the moment. The guy building the engine is Mike Perkins at Bavarian Machine Specialties in Houston, and he has extensive BMWCCA CR car building experience. He has said that with minor changes, the engine he is building me for soloII DSP will make a good KP engine.
He knows all the rules and regulations for club racing cages, and can easily build me a good, legal cage. He told me about the needed modification to the dash, and I was unsure of the legality of it for soloII DSP competition. At this point, the car must be legal for soloII DSP class, b/c that is itscurrent purpose. Street Prepared class is very restrictive when it comes to things like interior peices, or anything that could be viewed as lightening in any way. I came here to see if any auto-xer's could tell me for sure (or refrence that section of the showroom stock rules) about modifiying the dash for cage instalation.
Let me know if that makes things clearer.

SSS Section page 3. No interior component removal but interior panels may be cut to allow the roll cage to pass through.

vodomagoo 02-28-2005, 01:38 PM Id recomend build the cage for safey and what ever level or racing you think you might venture into. Unless your racing on the national level i doubt many people would protest as long as the interior remaind in place, lets not forget cages add weight
