Well i was coming home from my accident (see link Stupid accident (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3744537#post3744537) ) and im stopped at a light next to my cousin, we are both the first ones in line and i say to him, "hey theres an ls1 behind us (round lights on the camaro)" so we take off quickly from the light to try and bait him in and it works :devillook .

Well i let my cousin run him first, (97 Cobra with Intake, exhaust, and chip) and they are even from 65-110 with the cobra pulling slighty as the speeds rose which is exactly the opposite as what i thought was going to happen, but thats what happened and if you dont believe me too bad, it's the truth.

Then my cousin slowed down and i got next to the camaro. I slow to 40 and he does too. I downshifted to 2nd and waited he downshifted and we both took off at the same time, thru second he may have pulled 1/4 of a car length on me, i shift to third and we are even to 70 when he shifts to third, he then pulled about a car on me.

I was really wondering why he didn't pull a lot harder, we did take it to about 85 so he did have time in his 3rd gear. I wasn't really as impressed with the ls1 as i thought i would have been. I have always thought that the 6 speed ls1 was a monster in third gear. I know he was a 6 speed because we talked when he pulled into my neighborhood and we were at the stop sign as he was turning left and me right.

He complimented me back when i said nice car, and said he was suprised how i kept up with him. He asked if the cobra had headers and cams, and i told him, i think he was dissapointed with his car after that. Either way that really helped me and my cousins nights out. After the accident we were both in a really depressed mood.

Seems a little weird. In another of your posts, you say that that 97 Cobra blows your doors off at speed. Then runs about even with the Camaro. Then the Camaro runs about even with you. Not doubting you by any means. Stranger things have happened. Way to stay close. :cool

Good kill, but im guessing the Z owner couldnt drive a stick. Ive never seen a pre 99 Cobra with exhaust intake and chip even come close to taking down an LS1

Well the cobra pulls about a car and a half through HIS fourth gear, which is his best gear, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are very close with him about a car ahead. I only raced the camaro through 3rd. My cousin raced the camaro as well a little through fourth and he did pull very slowly in fourth, i think that if we (Me vs. the camaro) would have continued any higher he would have began pulling much harder.

Im not sure the Z's owner was a good driver or not, but we started in 2nd, there was no downshift to mess up. And when i shifted to third he didn't leap ahead during my shift, and when i heard him shift i didn't leap ahead of him. So im not sure that he was that bad of a driver. Also my cousins cobra has ran a 13.7 at 104 in the quarter, and now he has gotten his car custom tuned at the shop he works at which specializes in Ford Tuning.

Also he was running on bald tires on the 13.7, and now he has good tires. I think his car is just as fast as an ls1, ive seen it run, ive ridden in it and ive driven it. Ive also driven a 99 Camaro LS1 auto, my cousins car seems to be faster than it.

How did i know you guys werent going to believe this, well here's a video of my cousin beating an auto Fire hawk Cobra vs. Firehawk (http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=59797) (Right Click Save As)

while im not calling bs, something was wrong with the camaro driver, most likely couldnt drive, had it a gear too high, etc...bc your right, the ls1 3rd gear is killer, and if driven properly would put many many carlengths on you and the cobra. either way, good run :buttrock

My cousin makes a good point. Whats so weird about a car (the cobra) staying even with a car that with an average driver (camaro) runs mid 13's at about 105 and my cousin staying with him? I know had we continued the race when i was racing him he would continued pulling hard on me. He was in third from 70-85 and pulled a car on me, i think thats quite a bit. If he would have ran 3rd out im sure he would have had a couple on me. Whats so hard to believe? And the cobra with its new tune and tires is in the mid 13's at about 105 or 106, the same as an average driven LS1. Just because Silverstreak and some others can get low 13's or high 12's from an ls1 doesnt mean that they all can do that.

i can understad the cobra staying with him a little better now, but your still at 14.0 at 97.xx mph, and that means the camara is half a second faster with 8mph on you, which is a very big difference, he should be pulling very hard in 3rd gear...

I was thinking Cobras got the power bump in 98 along with the GT. The 97 CObra did get the 305hp engine. Guess it would have been a decent race afterall.

Personally i consider a whole car from 70-85 and still pulling hard pretty good and im sure he would have pulled more if we would have continued.

the 97 cobra did have 305 hp, but it was heavy as a boat....and a car from 70-85 mph may seem big to you, but i consider that not a hard pull, in reality, it should have been multiple car lengths in that mph range...not doggin on you its just that i know what the ls1 can do and my best friend has an 01 ws6 so ive seen slaughter first hand :D

well you believe the cobra being even with it and the cobra pulls 1 1/2 to 2 cars on me at that speed the same as the ls1 did.

Good kill. I have learned the hard way not all LS1s are created equal. And it being a 98, normal wear and tear has most likely taken ahold of his engine. LS1 Fbodies dont exactly live a easy life, there owners do push them.

That could easily be a factor in this, good point, this guy may have a 150,000 mile LS1 on its last leg. I don't know what his specs were, and the fact he was racing it if it is high miles he could be running on a bad motor, maybe his plugs are bad, maybe this and that, all i know is he only pulled a car from 70 to 85 in his 3rd.

that is a really good point...i wasnt doubting you or anything, but from my personal experiences, and allt he races ive been in with my friend in his ws6, i know that they are monsters...and i think a car and a half is a good race :buttrock

. LS1 Fbodies dont exactly live a easy life, there owners do push them.

This is the damn truth. Three close friends of mine rag the hell out of their LS1 cars...one has a Z28, the other an SS, and one with a WS6.

Every single time they get in their cars, they drive them hard, and I mean hard. A 98 LS1 that has been beaten to death will likely run poorly compared to a newer LS1 with a less tired engine. This is sort of like buying a car. You can buy a car with 110K miles that has been taken care of, maintained well and runs great with a strong engine, or a car with 30K miles of beating hell and carelessness and a VERY tired engine. It all depends how you take care of it, how strong it'll run.

Nice job with the race, though.
