I just wanted to post to say thanks for all of the trailer advice. I just got my car hauler today and the whole process was a lot easier with the advice I got from the board.

I ended up takeing the advice of many by going with the lightest trailer I could get my hands on. Although my towing vehicle (a 2000 Dodge Durango) has more than enough towing capacity at 5600 lbs, I figured the lighter the better.

Here is what I got:

- 15 ft Econo Trailer (21 ft total length)
- Dual axle brakes
- 5 ft sliding ramp
- Break-away kit
- Tongue jack
- LED lighting

Total cost for the trailer and accessories (T-hooks, ratchet straps, spare tire, brake controller, etc) was $2120 which includes shipping of the trailer to my door. Total weight for my car/trailer combo is approx 4400 lbs.

Now I need to get rid of y mini tire trailer. Somebidy make me an offer ;) !!!

Nice choice.
A good combo. I think you'll be quite happy with it (until a few years later, you start eyeing enclosed trailers and duallys).

One tip,,, buy a case of matte black Rustoleum for touchups.
I always had a can of Rustoleum nearby. I was constantly touching up my Econo trailer to prevent rust. The paint they use (at least 8 years ago) was kind of "thin". But,,, on the upside its matte black steel and touches up easy with matte black Rustoleum, it keeps the rust away and keeps the trailer looking like new.

Good luck.

Started 8 years ago with a 15' Econo and an SUV,,, now Dually and enclosed....

I can see a dually and enclosed trailer in my future (albeit far off for now :) ) but you have to start some where. Thanks for the tip on the paint. I knew going into this deal that the paint was not a strong point on the trailer (I already put some minor scratches on it). The paint is a higher gloss finish now but that won't be a problem.

good choice i almost went that route but for a little more found a 28ft enclosed, no dualy though but the cummins has no probs with the trailer. The durango should pull that easily. Might i remend a weight distributing hitch though helps out alot

I got a few requests for pictures of my trailer setup so here they are. I have not mounted a truck box to it yet, but I plan on placing it just forward of the ramps (essentially right in front of the bumper).

i would def consider a weight distributing hitch or at least a drop down for the ball. homedepot has some decent boxes but if you want fancy check out some of the tow industry companies, they sell under the rail 18wheeler boxes which are realy nice

The trailer actually doesn't sit that high when I am towing and is level with the Durango. I have the trailer jacked up since I was getting ready to unload the car right before I took the picture.

I've been lurking on the trailer threads for a while now, picking up as much as I can. Seems like you got a good deal, where did you end up buying the trailer from?

Econo Trailer at www.econotrailer.com. They are located in Claysburg, PA.

You may be forced to get a load distributing hitch setup. Since you don't have much room to position the car on the trailer, when you add a box full of stuff to the front you may have too much tongue weight.

Yeah, get the distributing hitch... it's well worth it.

I thought about the tounge weight issue. Although I have not measured it yet, I am pretty sure I don't have enough toungue weight yet. But I probably will end up getting a weight distributing setup. So far, the trailer handles pretty well.
