I have a friend that bought an SRT-4 and he did some slight modding and we always argued who would win between the two of us and we finally decided to go at it.

My car: '04 330ci w/ CAI, AA exhaust, AA strut bar
His car: '04 SRT-4 stage 1 turbo, K&N intake, strut bar

we drove out to the industry area by europalace and mcdonalds on the east side of the Rhine in Mainz. on friday and saturday night the area is patrolled heavily by cops due to all the drunk drivers leaving the club in the industry area. this was sunday night though and no cops or people to be seen in the area. there is one long stretch of road going the length of the industry area and it is very smooth and wide because of all the truck traffic. it was a very cold night around -5 degrees celcius. we both have stock rubber so we are a bit wanting when looking for traction. we lined up at the far end of the road and set a semi trailer as our finish line somewhere close to a 1/4 mile. we lined up next to each other and used the third honk as a sign to go. he did the honking first and i launched with too many RPM's for the temp and spun my tires completely through first but i still gained a carlength in first and another in second but by the time his turbo kicked in and he passed me going through third about 50 meters from the finish. we shut down and went back for another run and this time from the start i launched about 1700 RPM instead of 2500 and immediately gained 3-4 carlength through first and second but as soon as he hit third gear he started catching up but it was too little too late and we had already passed the trailer before he passed me after i started to shut it down. we both got out and had a smoke and talked about his turbo and such. i get him from the line every time but as soon as that damn turbo spools up and he hits third gear he catches up to me. we tried some from a roll on the autobahn and neither one of us could pull away from the other. it was exciting for sure but this makes me want to go FI even more! he wouldnt have a chance then for sure. :cool

Nice kill.
A guy at work has an SRT-4 with Mopar Stg1 and wants to race me and a friend who has a 350Z. I'll probably race him next weekend after we get our cars dynoed.

Nice race man, so you have the ZHP with mods as well? Very nice...one thing I'm confused about though...if he always takes you in 3rd, why are you guys even from a highway run? :confused

agreed.

Also do the Euro Bimmers still put out more power than the US ones or was that only for like e36's that were plagued with that downfall? Because if you had the 330 from US, it doesn't seem like you should do so well. But i'm also not real knowledgeable on Neon's and only hear that they're fast.

I dont think its turbo lag that is causing the srt4 to fall behind. Its probably a traction issue. This is usually their issue for slow-ish 1/4 mile time, but fantastic trap speeds.

I dun get how can anyone gain 3-4 carlengths in just first gear unless they stall, especially racing...
Can you imagine 3-4 carlengths is about an intersection? so its like saying you cross the intersection at a light and he didn't even move yet. and 1st gear is so short most of the time I have to shift to 2nd as I was passing in the intersection launching at the light, imagine that with a srt-4 racing...

btw nice kill anyway

I ran a SRT-4 once when we were both stock. I could launch harder and basically it was pretty close 0-90 with me just keeping my front end in front of him that I got on the launch.

They are pretty strong in 2nd and 3rd. They struggle with launching with pull power because of FWD. They are still quick in 4th and highway rolls, but the smaller displacement starts to show itself 100+mph.

The results of this race are very surprising. I definitely thought the modded SRT-4 would take the ZHP without too much of a problem. Granted, traction would be a little tough for the Dodge, but I didn't think it would produce those kinds of results. I'm definitely gonna chalk this one up to driver skill.

The fact that people are still talking about when turbos "kick in in 3rd gear" is funny.

Don't turbos kick in every gear? :)

Yeah, I bet it was more like 1 - 1.5 cls and pulling, not 3-4. that is a HUGE amount of distance and there simply wouldn't be enough time to do it.

Unless you were on a sportsbike.

Exactly. My roommate has exhaust and mopar stage 1 and he walks away from me. They trap nearly 100 stock...the mopar kits add a lot.

Nice kill dude. Not to take anything away from you or your car, but I believe you simply outdrove your buddy. Launching an SRT-4 is a nightmare without some sort of slicks and/or motor mounts. Most of the guys putting down great 400m times shift out of 1st gear under 5k RPM's. Redline is 6k on a stage 1 SRT-4. With my Mopar stage 2 '04 SRT-4 (6500 RPM redline) I had to feather the clutch to get any sort of traction is 1st OR 2nd gear. Boost is limited by the PCM to 8psi-10psi in 1st gear but 2nd gear will see 18lbs if it's warm enough outside. As far as the turbo spooling up...these things have no lag in a 1/4 mile run. It's only when you're cruising on the highway and doing less than 2500 RPM's that you feel turbo lag. With stage 2 that gets fixed though as the turbo spools to full boost at anything over 2100 RPM's if you ask it to.

I used to have the other picture that you are referring to as my desktop, "the ultimate attraction". Perhaps the joke in this one is that the chick is boning the guy because he has a nice car? Either way, funny stuff.
