Ok, last night I was in a pissed off mood around 11 pm. I was almost home when I notice some xenon lights behind me at the red light I was waiting. Didn't think much of it, just waited for the green trying to cool off. I was on Comm. Ave which is a two lane street. Anyway, as soon as the light turned green, I took off normally and notice the car behind me trying to get around me and almost hit me rear bumper [I was in the right lane and he thought there was 3-lanes I guess :rolleyes ] So he then switches to the left and floors it...I was like WTF...not tonight! I floor it in 2nd and keep his front bumper to my rear, no gain. Next light is red :redspot Both stop, I look over at the car, new CLK with AMG package three younger guys in there all looking over at me smiling...I smile back and shut off the DSC. Now, problem is the road is wet, it was not raining, but there was some light snow that had just fell and melted. I figured a conservative launch would be okay...light turns green, barely any wheel spin and jumped one car on him :redspot Top of first, still ahead about the same, switch to second, guy is still behind...until the road started to curve right, I was approaching the redline in second but since I was running the winters the inside wheel started to lose grip and the front left did as well, and since the guy was to my left, I backed off at around 55...he overturned the turn and got into my lane and I followed suit from 2-3 cl's behind only to see NY plates and that is was a CLK 500. Next red light, there was a car in the L lane he went right and I was right behind him... :devillook guy sitting in the rear seat turned to look at me. Light turns green again and he takes off, I keep it in first and once I clear the car get in the L lane. We both floor it at the same time, By the time I switched to 2nd I was already at his drivers door, by the top of second I had a hood on him then we both hit the brakes and I put it 3rd, went down the dark hill with a curve through a blinking yellow light slowly and went at it again...this time I was on the left on the right hand turn :evil2 it seemed he backed off this time and I took the lead.

Fun race but I had the weight advantage, but he definetely had a tire advantage.

CLK 500 AMG coudln't beat you? Am I missing something? Or is it not a "full" AMG car? I have to say I don't know alot about Mercedes. Also I realize taht the street conditions may have had a huge effect on the outcome of the race. But if you could answer my questions, it would clear things up for me. :)

CLK 500 has 302hp V-8. From a role it will eat a 330 pretty easily but from the holeshot I'd say it's a driver's race. Sounds like a good kill.

gitderdone the clk500 comes with an amg sport package so it looks like a clk55, but it definitely is nothing like the clk55 which packs a 360hp supercharged v-8 and will prolly pull an e46 m3 on the highway.

Yeah, sounds like 2 extra guys = 350 lbs would even things out plenty. Better traction in the snow though...

Well did he ever say it was an amg?? Do they all come with amg, I dont believe so atleast.

They do say AMG on the wheels and have a sport package that looks adenticle to a CLK55. Only difference is the exhaust, wheels and a lip spoiler. My buddy has one of them and the thing is a damn moster. When i had my 330ci with dinan S1 he took me from 80 on the highway pretty good.

Nice race!

Sounds pretty amazing that you pulled on a CLK 500 once you were going. He carried a lot of extra weight though, but it still sounds strange.

The CLK55 AMG is definately not supercharged. It is N/A 5.5L 367hp (sweden numbers. Could differ slightly to US model).

In Sweden the CLK500 does not come with the AMG-bodykit. It could be different in the US but I doubt it. Why would Mercedes want to make all regular 500s look like 55s for no extra? The bodykit is quite expensive.

Having been in the market for a clk recently I can confirm that all of the new e500's and most if not all of the clk 500's have the amg aero packake on them. But yes it is N/A

Yes, you're right. I looked at the US webpage and the 500 actually has the AMG-kit installed from factory. Too bad it isn't like that in Sweden. The AMG-kit makes the car look awesome.

Thanks guys, yeah, it was def. the new CLK 500 with the AMG package, he had the extra weight so that is why he maybe he could not pull on me. My snow wheels/tires are lighter than the 18's, but the traction is just not there, except when driving in the snow :) Could not race for too long though, I mean, the road was wet, it's sort of a residential street, it was dark, and there were a lot of turns and potholes, the highest we got it up to was probably 70-75, and that was still too much. When I raced my Corolla with a Golf VR6 down the same section of the street we went up to about 90, dry out, but I knew the limits of my Corolla, still learning my BMW ;)

Older 2000 model and newer 2003 model CLK55 AMG (real AMG) never had a supercharger. I wonder why they kept that car NA. All new AMG line have boost except that one :confused

Not exactly because the slk55 isnt either.Because to do that would put it directly in comp with the e55 price wise. They have to offer some amg cars for those who cant afford the e55 and up. It's smart to keep a broader horizon to appeal to more customers. Also the clk55's are losing value @ extreme rates. The depreciation is awefully fast on them. Similar to where bmw is headed with m1 m3 m4 m5 and m6 to appeal to more people.

my mistake for some reason i thought merc was using FI on all their AMG models to make big power but I guess that isn't so on the lower models.

Hard to believe you pulled on him, but anyway good job.
Perhaps he had traction control on an dhence why you beat him....

you are probably right, I had my DSC shut off all the time, he probably did not, and if I remember correctly, when going over a bumpy road, my DSC kicks in...oh well, still his loss and my win :devillook

Yeah, CLK body style doesn't hold their value at all. They depreciate the most compared to all Benzs. Good for second hand buyers though.:D

Not according to the mercedes benz forum they dont. And if the rest of the cars are losing value like the clk's then mercedes will be having some problems. I for one know that the s-class holds better than the clk but as for the rest I cant say.

The SLK55 and CLK55 are not superchared, but as far as being direct price copm with the e55, the SLK/CLK are in a completely different class than the E. They are 2dr coupe/conv VS 4 door sedan. I've heard the clk and slk are not supercharged as to not compete with the SL55, which makes more sense to me. An SLK w/ SC would be significantly cheaper than an SL55, but not a whole lot less of car, and they'd be in the same category - 2 door roadsters.

Yeah that makes sense but what I meant was from a price standpoint. You dont want to have a bunch of cars in that price range and none in the lower range that other people would want so they could have an AMG.

Coupes almost always depreciate faster than 4 door sedans... check most leasing rates for residual values, etc....

Also, I'm not terribly surprised as some of you are, the CLK500 isn't exactly a lightweight car...

factory weight on a clk500 is 3,600 lbs. not sure if merc's numbers are laden or unladen...but it gives you an idea. add 3 big guys in it and you are easily over 2 tons.... That's a lot of weight even for 339lb ft of tq.
