View Full Version : e36 vs. souped El Camino
heifetz17 02-23-2005, 06:24 PM I was driving home today, and I usually like to take this nice twisty road home. That road exits onto a ghastly long straight 4 lane one way. I was cruising down the road at about 45 when I hear a low rumble come up along side me. This guy in a red souped El Camino was doing at least 50 and started passing me. It almost sounded like he had a 302 or even a 360 dropped in. I'm not sure what it was, but it wasn't stock. He also had exhaust. It was a pretty aggressive, low rumble. No rice.
This was your typical bad a$$, one arm slouched over a chain link steering wheel, micro machine wheels/tires with those fan blade things in the wheels that you would see on a Chariot in Ben Hur. He slowed down a little and I got ahead of him. I got stopped at a light and when it turned green, I started going, and he gunned it. I just kept it cool and he got stopped at the next light. I pulled up along side him and when the light turned green, we both gunned it.
I got him off the line and we both screamed through first, into second, rounded off third into fourth and that's when I shut it down about 1-1 1/2 cls ahead of him. He was doing everything to try to pass me, but I was steadily, but slowly pulling away from him.
I think the biggie is that his shifts took about a second to complete, while I have mine practiced down to about 2-3 tenths of a second. I can shift mad fast and his shifts were rather slow. It was fast car, but not quick enough to keep up with the Silver Stallion. He sped off ahead of me and I didn't see him again. It was pretty fun ebarrassing him in his "pimp" ride. :alright
DirtyHarry 02-23-2005, 09:42 PM Was it an El Camino or a Ranchero, because a 302 and 360 are both Ford motors. Either way, great job at keeping him in his place with a bimmer lol.
1BMW2VWs 02-23-2005, 09:58 PM or was it a 305 or 350? ;)
heifetz17 02-23-2005, 10:09 PM It could have been a ranchero. One of the two. :D
EThirD 02-23-2005, 11:08 PM I think there was a Chevy 302 as well.
Heckler&Koch 02-23-2005, 11:20 PM Those old manuals don't shift nearly as fast as newer ones.

Not in an El Camino. The Chevy 302 was made for Z28's in '68-'69 and was never available in the El Camino. Early El Caminos were based on the Chevelle and got 307's, 327's, 350's, and for a few golden years HiPo 396's and 454's. By the mid 70's it was only 350's and 305's when the platform changed to the Malibu chassis. By the early 80's, they were only getting the 305.
giterdone 02-23-2005, 11:49 PM aye my friend had a 67 el camino. He got a 454 and put that sucker in there. OMG did that baby haul some rear end. Needless to say, he was the fastest kid in our high school. Also the loudest car (right after the cat backs, his exhaust dumped out. No mufflers hehe).

Yeah I knew the Camino never got it, I guess I misread an earlier post and thought it said Chevy didn't build a 302, when they were just saying it wasn't available in the Camino. Anyway, if someone really liked their Camino they could have tossed one in there. I'm a big 302 fan, it's my fav Chevy motor.
hwl328is 02-24-2005, 12:09 AM the silver stallion :lol :alright :rofl

Chevy 302? HA! Thats funny shit. My FORD Bronco has a 302 in it stock. I think 302 is more well-known with Ford rather than with it POS companion Chevy

They dont. 360 is all Ford

Actually, 360's are (or were) built by Ford, Chrysler, and AMC. Chrysler is the only company that still makes a 5.9

Nope, that's all AMC, baby! :buttrock
I had one of those. That's the 304/360/401 family. I loved that motor. Lots of torque. Not much HP, but lots and lots of torque.

You're right about the torque. It's like chocolate syrup! :buttrock

Uh... no. Chrysler bought up AMC a while back before the "merger" with Daimler-Benz...
bmwdeath2004 03-04-2005, 12:08 AM :lol
Yeah and the silver stalion doesnt have a convertible top. it just has a drop chute. You know the places down at the stock yards, now he can pull up under one of those deals where they fill up trucks and stuff with crap. well now he can get some manure for that flower pot on wheels. ;)

Heads don't flow for shit beyond like 4k RPM. New heads on a 360 are worth 100 hp.

Heckler&Koch 03-05-2005, 03:18 AM Sorry Hugo, I didn't mean to.
