View Full Version : a cougar tried to race me... why?
cosmos4life 02-22-2005, 11:37 AM I was on my way to the gym and stopped at a redlight besides a newer cougar, the fat girl driving gave me a dirty look and inched up sticking into the intersection. She was smoking a butt too.
The light turns green and i take off slowly and shift to second almost immediately, and the cougar slammed on the gas. The roads were finally dry and clear of snow so I couldn't let this happen to me. I took it up to 6K thru second and third and realized how fast I was going and slowed down, the cougar was way behind me. At the next light it was next to me again taking a right and the drivers was looking at me babbling with its mouth open angry over it.
Whatever fatty you started it. I'm sure you were in a real rush to get somewhere at 11am on a saturday
It was badged V6 but I know those things aren't fast. I haven't seen much action driving this thing, I've lined up with two WXR's since getting this thing, non-STI's, both times with slush all over the place and each time spun my tires too much and gave up, id like to go against one of those when things clear up and i get rid of the winter tires. I got to run with an E36M on the highway a few times. Im sure Ill get plenty of fun in the spring, but...... I'm going to be a step 9 in a month and dont really want to jeopardize that too much
SilverStreak 02-22-2005, 11:46 AM My wife had a 99 Cougar with the V6 and 5 spd manual. It was zippy. Probably 0-60 in the low 7's at best. After 15 mos of ownership and 11 overnight visits to the service dept, all for different problems, we ditched it...
I did manage to embarass a guy in 96 or so Mustang GT. We were at a light, and across the intersection, 2 lanes went to 1. He was in the lane that went away, so all I had to do was stay even with him, or near by. He had an auto. I out-launched him, and by the time he was about to gain on me, he ran out of road and had to get behind me.... boy was he pissed... :D
JBgotM 02-22-2005, 11:46 AM When I bought my roadster, I had to make a road trip to get it home. When I was on the highway, I have a VERY "customized" :rolleyes cougar come up next to me and try to race. Considering I had never pushed the car, I dodn't know exactly what would happen. We shifted and took off. It was ugly. I pulled on him pretty hard. That was my first kill 2 years ago when I bouhgt it. There have been many since then. :D
bmwfan2304 02-22-2005, 11:47 AM that's awsome, you've gotta put people like that in their place when you're in a bimmer... i don't understand the people that want to race sometimes... once a big brown, mid 70's truck was lurching next to me and the old guy was looking at me, so the light changed, and i was through the intersection before he was over the line! lol
nice job!

IS 300_M 02-22-2005, 11:55 AM Whatever fatty you started it. I'm sure you were in a real rush to get somewhere at 11am on a saturday
maybe she needs to get a couple of burgers? :D
giterdone 02-22-2005, 12:07 PM LOL yeah, those things aren't anything special. When I first got my prelude, I was hesitant of them because they had a V6 badge. But they are a huge 2.5L 170hp/165tq car with a curb weight of 3013# in 2002 for the manual, it was 3200# for the autos. The engine was the same but the weight of a manual in 99 was 2941# and 3021# for autos. They seem like they would be quick, but nothing spectacular at all. Also on the lines of a girl car. So I wouldn't even want one as a high schooler as a first car or anything, even though it is probably a little agile.
But good job, on putting the porker in her place.
If she lost a little weight then maybe she would have a better chance at beating ya. :stickoutt
sirtiger 02-22-2005, 12:10 PM its bizarre why would she get angry over it :dunno
well, nice kill anyway.

Well on the same note you never know what the person you're running against has under the hood. I've contemplating putting a GM Fast Burn Big Block in the Jeep or maybe a modified small block. I think it would be funny to pull up next to a "sports car" throw it into a 4 wheel drive and ...... The only problem is the jeep hates to stop so I'd hate to have that much power on close to stock brakes. So now brakes, engine, tranny, the project is way out of budget. Point is you never KNOW, there are some sick people out there.
Boondoggie 02-22-2005, 12:25 PM She was probably saying "Why the hell did you take off like that, I'm just driving like i always do but I guess I injured your fragile pride?" when she was at that second light?
You drive a car like a Cougar and you ALWAYS floor it from a light or you'll never et anywhere... that fact that you took it as a threat is just funny, she probably hadn't thought twice about you until you did the ricer flyby...
SilverStreak 02-22-2005, 12:28 PM The Cougar was the same platform as the Ford Contour, didn't they make a Cougar S with the SVT 200 hp 2.5 V6 for a little while...?
M3/4 LIFE 02-22-2005, 12:48 PM But good job, on putting the porker in her place.

:lol :lol :lol
sooooooooooo true!!!!
Serious 02-22-2005, 01:51 PM i raced a grand am with exhaust and destroyed it by 10-12 cars up to 120.
it was sad. i was nice and gave thumbs up after the kill.
sometimes u have to show them whats up.

I don't think so. There was no sign of anything over the 170hp v6 on autos.msn (you will come to realize that is site I go to for car info....but it does have its occassional errors...which makes me look dumb. :))
Ahh no wait...correction. (I just now checked 2001, before I only hit 99,00, and 02 thinking 01 would be the same)
2001 Cougar S
hp: 196 @ 6750 RPM
tq: 168 @ 5500 RPM
weight: 3102 (only manual available)
Seems it was only in 2001.
98 Ford Contour SVT
hp: 195 @ 6625 RPM
tq: 165 @ 5625 RPM
weight: 3065 (only manual available)
99 Ford Contour SVT
hp: 200 @ 6600 RPM
tq: 169 @ 5500 RPM
weight: 3129 (only manual available)
2000 Contour SVT is same as 99. Those were the 3 years that Contour had SVT engine.

..and what place is that?
now I know where the stereotypical bmw driver comes from....
cosmos4life 02-22-2005, 02:13 PM Before this turns into anything else it happened because of this....
'fat girl driving gave me a dirty look and inched up sticking into the intersection. She was smoking a butt too'
Had it been a typical ricer I would have ignored it, but this was funny to me.
TrunkImpaired 02-22-2005, 02:43 PM Everyone thinks they've got something until proven otherwise. I looked at cougars for a while, but I just couldn't get excited about owning one.

It's always funny to blow someone's doors off every once in a while, especially the unsuspecting ones. If you think about it, the only one (or only thing) you were hurting was your wallet when the MPG needle burries itself at WOT.
M Roady 02-22-2005, 03:41 PM Nice kill! For some reason fat people and smokers piss me off. A manual V6 Couger should be reasonably quick, but nothing for any manual I6 BMW to be particularly concerned about. The automatic probably sucks, adds 200 pounds, and fatty probably wasn't helping the power weight ratio either. Cougers are good chick cars.

Nice kill man. You mean WRX right??? lol
giterdone 02-22-2005, 07:25 PM Nice kill man. You mean WRX right??? lol
ummm he said that. "I've lined up with two WXR's since getting this thing, non-STI's" He was saying it was a WRX non-STi instead of a WRX STi.

I was JUST saying to a friend that the only problem with the BMW is the elitist attitude some of the other owners have. Never before have I seen a place where someone with a car worth less than a used KIA thought they could "put someone in their place"
CakeorDeath? 02-22-2005, 10:00 PM When I read the subject line I thought you were talking about a real cougar. You know, like a cat.
That would've been a good race. Yup.

i wasn't being snobby at all, trust me, i know that there are cars that can beat our cars, i've raced plenty of seemingly P.O.S. cars that have beat me, it's only that some people obviously want to race for the wrong reasons and seem to have a problem with you... sorry if it didn't sound right, it's not what i meant... i was aiming more at the attitude of the driver than anything... i don't mean to sound eleitist.... i just think that some people deserve to be put in their place...

roderage 02-24-2005, 12:04 AM So if a kid in a Honda put a beating on your car, then some other 18second honda spouted off about how "you gotta put people like that in their place when you are in a HONDA" would you think they sounded like an idiot?
You may not have meant to sound like an elitest, but you did sound like one.

I think what BMWfan2304 meant by his statement was more of a driver issue than a brand issue. There's a few toolish drivers in every demographic that get so absorbed into thinking one car maker is wayyyyy better than all others. I'm sure everyone else has had another gunning for them, simply becuase they drive a BMW. People generally do take notice of our cars, and if they're wanting to see how they stack up against the "ultimate driving machine", they'll give you a go. "Putting in thier place" may not be the correct choice of words in this situation, but if someone is going to talk trash about my car (esp. my ///M) or simply try to jump me at the light simply for the sake that I drive a BMW, then i hope to show them that there's more to cars than brand X, even if it means laying down the loud pedal with authority. (And if i lose, i'll just call AA :buttrock )
And comon, it was Cougar. ever ridden in or driven one? They're ok, but they're not exactly high up in the automotive "food chain". I think everyone can agree with that.
Side note: Some of you are just dying to take down a (insert super premium car maker here) one day..... that's the same deal with anyone else. Just beating something "better", with what you have.

see, i wouldn't have a problem with that, honestly. because all they are doing is supporting a fellow honda driver. and besides, i meant it with a hint of sarcasm. but it wouldn't bother me one bit. to each his own.

thanks, i hate it when i say something and someone takes it the wrong way, or maybe i even wrote it the wrong way. seeing as i meant it with a hint of sarcasm i can see where everyone is coming from, but realy i was just being supportive... LOL

wsmc831 02-24-2005, 11:39 AM beating someone in some stupid street race puts them in their place?
what place is that, exactly?
SilverStreak 02-24-2005, 11:55 AM Easy gents... lighten up... :cop

aye I agree.

When i drove my prelude, i knew it wasn't quick, but if I got a chance to try a porsche boxster, a carerra if they'd give me the time of day, or a M3 i would definately do it. To see how my car woudl fare, also on the off chance that the guy was a piss poor driver and I could claim that i beat that car in all honesty. I got to do that with a new Trans Am in my prelude. But whenever you have a hgiher end car, you are always going to get lower cars trying to challenge you. It is like King of the HIll, when you are on top, you always have challegnes, and that is the price you pay for being on top. I'm not saying M3's are on top, but we are definately on top one of the smaller hills in the ultimate mountain.
Justin95GSR 02-24-2005, 06:26 PM I was riding with my bro(Ron17) one time back when he had his white 3.25i. We pulled up next to some car and the driver was fat and nasty but the passenger was fine. So we started smiling, and the trashy fat hoe says "Oh.. what...you think we gon holla at ya'll cuz ya'll in a bimma!" and I'm like oh.. what.. actually, you stupid fat slob, we were certainly looking at you're passenger and not you.

good job. Don't want her to go around thinking anybody was trying to get with her.
