View Full Version : Worlds most powerfull M20 motor
This motor was in a E21 before, that have done 9,50 sec on the quartermile as best (650hp). The new owner has put it in a E28, and as fuel it uses etanol now. The car has not been dynoed yet, but expect 800++++ hp and a 9 on the quartermile.

jesus flippin christ...i was oogling over your guys' manifolds and BOVs the other day when they came in...but that intake manifold is above and beyond! Amazing work! And i'm glad someone is breathing crazy numbers out of M20s, apparantly the stock bottom ends of M20s are stronger than those of stock bottom end M50s...stock forged crank and pistons can't hurt, eh?

BMW Andreas your green machine is awesome, its the toughest E30 ever!
Once again you guys show the rest of the world how its meant to be done
with BMW drag racing.
When will it hit the track?

M50 bottom end not forged?

M50tu=cast crank...the only thing that isn't forged in the M20 bottom end assembly are the rods, if I'm not mistaken...I'm just saying that given what people have to say about the integrity of the M20 being better than that of the M50, I'm surprised that more people haven't tried tackling the M20 for big numbers, we all know what M50/M52s with stock bottom ends have been putting out lately (have been pushing close to 500 RWHP), so given that this is the case, I think that with a little bit of effort, one could easily squeeze those kinds of numbers from an M20 with the proper tuning.

bout time i seen an m20 doing its thing. i hope you make the numbers your looking for. By the looks of it you should be way past that 1000 hp mark.

M20B25 And M50B25 have cast crank.
If you take a crank from 324td you get 2.7lit and a forged crank in M20.
And a M50B28 crank is forged. I have one on those in my race engine!
M20 is a nice engine, now that we have found out why the head cracks.
We do some welding on it, then it holds for 7-800hp:)
Looking forward to the dynotest on my new engine! The turbo should handle 1300hp.

I forgot the specifics of it all, you're right on that one. I didn't realize that the M20 heads were known to crack, I thought that the M102/106es were the only bimmer motors that are somewhat 'known' for failures due to cracked heads. Keep us posted, you do some really nice work over there...lots of respect from over here...at least I got lots of respect for what you guys are up to...

Matt, when you make over 1,000 bhp then head crack! They aren't known to crack for street cars.

indeed, race duty seems to have the effect of excessive strain on motors as opposed to 'street' driven cars, though I think my S38 pre-rebuild would have to disagree with you on that one :D

Hard to explain on english for me:(
But as soon as we come up to 500hp, the head uses to crack, under the cam!
But we do some welding in the cooling areas in the head.
I can get you a picture!
What kind of manitake?
We build all parts by ourselfs. We work with only BMW Turbo all day:)

NICE,
That is amazing! That intake manifold is simply art. Do you sell intake manifolds for the m20? I like to get one to match my PPF turbo manifold. I hope to have pictures soon of my M20 rocking the ppf split pulse mani...

So lets get back to the M20...what is full boost(RPM) for that Holset turbo? The turbine housing is gigantic!!!! I love the look of that setup on both cars. The E30 has the strut towers much closer to the firewall and they are smaller so there is so much more room for the turbo up top on the exhaust side...Supra style!!! :buttrock

Full boost at 5000rpm. 29psi
It is a 2,7lit and has a PPF 280/280 cam with 11mm lift.
More mods:
PPF ported
PPF welded
Stainless valves
Hard valvsprings
Autronic ECU
So it spools pretty fast, even with a gigantic turbo:)
With this engine we run 9.50@154 in my friends E-21.

It's pretty clear that you love the Autronic engine management setups...can't blame you, i'm counting down the days for mine. How long are the runners on your intake manifold, and what size T/B are you stuffing on that beast?

Yes Autronic is the best!
The turbo is a PT88 with 93mm turbine and 0.96 A/R.

kenny and andreas, what do you guys like so much about autronic and motec that tec 3 doesn't have (this is an honest question and not a controversy starter). i have always heard that motec is barnone, the best and the swedes, who also happen to make the sickest hp numbners in the world, love the autronic. so could you guys chime in on why you like each on so much. TIA

Autronics Autotune is awesome. It tune the fuelmap itself when you are driving.
And it has a perfect boost control, with different curves and you can have different boost level at each 500rpm. If the engine is knocking sensitive you can have for example 10psi up to 5000rpm, then 20 psi. Then you can have much power on standard fuel.
