View Full Version : e36 vs. Corvette
heifetz17 02-20-2005, 03:24 PM I go to school with a guy that drives a 35th anniversary Corvette vert. We set up a race one day after school. When the time came, we met up along with a fairly large group of onlookers, some with video cameras and we went to the spot. We lined up, raised the RPMs, and our flagger dropped his arms and we took off. We both had a lot of wheel spin, and I had just a little more than I wanted and he started pulling off the line. I tried to catch up, but he kept on it and steadily pulled on me. We shut it down when he was about 3 cls in front of me. It was still a fun run. He's stock and I just have a K&N air filter w/ debaffled airbox. I have a video if anybody wants to host it.
I didn't have a problem getting him off the line in my 325iX, but I guess RWD is harder to launch well than AWD.
M3/4 LIFE 02-20-2005, 03:58 PM valiant death. :cool
heifetz17 02-20-2005, 05:05 PM E36 ix? :confused
e30 iX. I raced him before I got rid of it.
Said E36 vs Corvette :dunno
heifetz17 02-20-2005, 05:35 PM The first time I raced him was in my e30 and I got him off the line because of my AWD. I raced him recently in my e36 and he got me off the line. :)
hwl328is 02-20-2005, 05:41 PM there is no shame at all in losing to a vette... :buttrock
patrickrolfsen 02-20-2005, 06:50 PM i think you should do it again, only this time drop some road spikes in front of his car first... :devillook

In theory every Corvette made in 88 was a 35th anniv, but they did make a special edition that was formally known as special Anniversary model. That model however, was only made in a coupe, no verts. They could be identified by the white color body(nothing special there as they did make white non-anniv. models), black targa top & roll bar, white wheels, & white interior.
How do I know all this? I had an 88 white coupe. I didn't want an Anniv. model cuz white wheels & white interior are a bizatch to keep clean. My grey interior was close enough to the white, but easier to keep clean. BTW, I ran my car at the drags one time. Basically stock, I only got in 3 runs, my best was a 14.1. Given enough time, I could have probably got into the 13.9s .

Ah. I man who knows his Vettes, very good. If it was a true 35th, perhaps he meant T-top?
D
///Crash 02-21-2005, 06:16 PM yea you must watch out for them vett's they will pull on you
m3racer36 02-21-2005, 06:44 PM nice death I hope you didnt expect to win.
Phanta-Z 02-21-2005, 06:54 PM My buddy owns a used car dealership, he has an 88 Vette vert on the lot. We took it out the other night and ran it against his Fox body Stang, it went down HARD. I didn't think those car's were as quick as a 14 flat. His Stang is a low-13 sec car, I would have guessed that Vette would have been doing good to manage a 14.7 or so the way it lost. Oh well. Anywho, good death. :cool
You should race em :stickoutt
SilverStreak 02-21-2005, 07:14 PM Tom, I think the L98 Vettes were usually 0-60 in 5.8 or so, and 1/4 mile times in the low to mid 14's...

You're right, my friend must have been misinformed when he purchased it. He bought it as a 35th anniversary edition, but it must be a regular '88. It's red w/ white racing strips, and a black manual rag top.
heifetz17 02-22-2005, 12:16 AM click here (http://216.187.134.143:999/~sysadmin/chris/bmwsux.avi) for a video of the race.
coloboardin 02-22-2005, 01:35 AM whos the redneck voice at the end of the vid?

That's my Lincoln driving friend. He says everything on wheels is better than a BMW.
Woosh.. slow link. I think I'll let that download overnight, lol.
JFV1134 02-22-2005, 08:34 PM He says everything on wheels is better than a BMW.
He also thinks that a 1960's Lincoln with four flat tires, no paint job (rust), busted out window, dented up quarter panels, and blown rear suspension would sell FIRST when put against heifetz17's car. That's about as funny as him thinking lincoln is the best thing on wheels.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I mean, your talking ~1 full second difference in 1/4 times, thats about how that race looked to me. Car has nasty torque, but just falls on its ass on the big end. I guess for 1988 that wasnt bad, long as you ignored the Fox bodies and Buick GN. Im sorry, but until they squared off the tail lights (a-la ZR-1 style) I never cared for the early-C4 body style. :cool
SilverStreak 02-23-2005, 11:30 AM Yeah, the L98 Camaro's with DR's could cut some mean 60' times... not bad in the 1/8th, but really dropped off by the 1320' mark...
Phanta-Z 02-23-2005, 11:50 AM Hell the LT-1's were about the same way. Big time low end cars that really needed some top-end (as in top end of the motor and top end acceleration) help. Boy did they ever do an about-face with the Gen-III motors.
giterdone 02-23-2005, 03:14 PM I just watched that video. It seems you didn't do to bad. I mean I would hope he would beat you. He had more power than you and it is a "vette". You are driving one of BMW's slower cars for the e36 year, and he is driving chevy's flagship car. Granted his is older, but I would have to say, you didn't fare too bad. Your friend recording must really hate bimmers (as you adn your buddy said). Good race and hopefully you can get some mods, and beat him in the future. :)

Thanks. :)
I hope to get a few Dinan mods and hopefully that'll help me come back and beat him.
