View Full Version : G35 Coupe vs 530 (E39) vs Alero???

Wasn't much of a contest really but there's a twist...

From a light, 3 lanes. Oldsmobile Alero in the left, E39 middle, me in the right. I had been toying with the Olds before we hit the light, I wasn't really that concerned with running anymore with him but the Bimmer in the middle lane made it interesting.

Light turns and sure enough the 5er and the Olds take off so I figure, why not? So as you can imagine, I caught them both easily and proceed to run, not walk them both. I shut down at 100mph and by then I had easily a dozen + CLs. So yeah, I know not much of a contest, lighter, more power, better aeros but here's the twist...

From my mirror that Olds looked to be absolutely dead even with the 5er! Who'd have thunk it? An Oldsmobile Alero? I'd have never guessed it.

Now I realize the 530's not the quickest Bimmer on the road but still, would anyone honestly have expected that Olds to run him dead even like that?

530 is that slow?? I have a hard time believing that... I would think the 530 can take on a Alero... dunno

Alero's have 3.4 liter 170 hp engines(optional) on a 5 speed manual (with sport package). You'd be pretty dumb not to double clutch/speed shift .. if your plans are to try to take down a 530i (6.7-6.9 seconds to 60). My guess is the 530i got a bad start, wasnt flooring it or was pacing him, or the olds had mods(doubt it)

hah I know this alero crap because I raced an alero(vaxhaull in germany i think) coupe on the autobahn in a 2.5 Liter diesel 6 speed audi allroad. From a 5th gear roll on at 90 ish we were even then i downshifted and pulled away from him a good 10-15 car lengths by 135. It probably had a different engine then the U.S spec olds though.

I wouldn't have thought the Alero to be the kind of car someone would mod but that is a decent amount of displacement. I 'spose there's some potential there.

The 5er and the Olds both got great starts, they caught me sleeping. They were definately WOT when we left the light. Pacing the Olds? I 'spose that's possible but why let the Japanese coupe run off and hide that way?

Maybe the Olds was modded. He seemed more confident than an Alero should've been when I was playing with him earlier. Anyway, I thought it all curious which is why I posted. Really wasn't much of a kill worth posting about.

Well, they were at least 40mph over the speed limit and way, way, way ahead of the pack of traffic.

Sorry, 530i's are no challenge whatsoever for a G35, I've run dead even with a 540. A stock 530 has no chance.

My only point of interest in posting this was how well the Olds ran against the 530.

530 5spd and a 540 6 speed?

I stomped on so many g35 sedans and g35c with ease with the 540/6. I suspect u must have ran against a 540ia or a horrible driver.

Not sure about the 530 5pd... but I think a g35c would win... the g35 sedan maybe not.

3.4L, 170 HP? ewwww.

I'm fairly positive the 540 I ran against was an auto. You can usually tell when a manual shifts, not this one.

By the way the 530i ran yesterday, I thinks it's safe to assume it was also an auto, probably with a full tank of gas, trunk full of groceries...

At the end of the day, he did drive home in the nicest car, a beautiful silver E39. I'm sure he's not loosing any sleep over it.

OK so you guys have got me thinking... I'm now wondering if it was a 525. That makes much more sense. A 525 and an Alero, straight up? Makes more sense to me and I was there.

so this whole thread is worthless.....as you mentioned in your previous post that the only reason you posted this kill was............

I 'spose. I could've sworn the badge said 530 but it really doesn't make sense the Alero kept up with a 530.

As far as the G35 running away from the 530, that's not a big deal stock vs stock as I've never had much trouble with any of the E39's excepting the one 540 I ran with. In that case I was pretty shocked there was a 5er that was able to keep up as I'd always beat them pretty easily. We were all finished running, back in traffic when I was shocked to see the 540 badge on his car. Shocked because he was unable to pass me or even pull on me for that matter! Had to have been an auto.

Manual and/or modded Alero, slushbox 530 with a driver afraid to floor it/overconfident... why not.

The Alero does have a 0.4 liter advantage, who knows what can happen on the street?

OMG! Some of the stuff in that thread is very consistent with what I saw! I just would've never imaginered an Alero was capable of that.

I did have a Buick Century loaner about a month ago with the smaller V6. I was surprised just how torquey the V6 felt on such a large car but the gearing was to wierd to make the car quick.

Strange things do indeed happen...

The Intrigue had the 3.5 V6, which is the same block and set up as the Northstar 4.6 V8, just had 2 cylinders chopped off... ("Northstar-lite"?)

The Aurora could be had with a 4.0 V8... but it wasn't a "Northstar"....

I had an Alero 4 banger as a rental. It was reasonably quick, definitely nimble. Speed limited at 108mph though.

Yeah, the Alero was essentially a nicer Grand Am, better interior, maybe some more sound deadening material, etc...

I've heard that one refered to as the "baby northstar". Supposed to be one sweet V6 but I don't GM's ever put it in anything that might be considered sporty.

I bet the alero was automatic. I smoked an alero with my moms grand am gt? It has a 175 hp 3.4 v6 so is it same motor as alero?
