If you guys remember, I ordered a Cooper w/ the auto tranny as a Mother's Day present for my mom. Finally got to drive the auto last weekend.

Drove the 5 spd and auto back to back. While they say there is very little power loss due to the tranny, here is my impression. As the car starts out in 1st, the belt or whatever it is, does what it has to. There is some lag in 1st gear as the tranny must adjust. However, when it does adjust, it is great! Playing with that Steptronic tranny is pretty fun, too. The Steptronic will not hold it in 1st and will automatically upshift in to 2nd when it reaches a certain rpm. From there, it must be downshifted or upshifted to the proper gear. Too bad they won't make the Cooper S in an auto. I'd trade it in and get mom a new car next year.
